GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WMBF) - Habitat for Humanity Georgetown County has secured permits to build more affordable housing for those in need.

The organization’s solution is to transform metal shipping containers into homes.

“Behind me you see HOPE,” said Laura Gassler, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity Georgetown County.

Over the last year and a half, the organization has been developing the concept of HOPE. A project that will work to help those making 30% or less of the area’s median income, secure housing.

“The hope for HOPE is that we’re able to reach a demographic in Georgetown County that has no chance of getting a home in any way,” said Gassler.

She said while searching for a housing solution, shipping containers were the most cost-effective.

“We had the idea of shipping containers. We don’t have to roof them, we don’t have to side them, so that takes out a lot of the cost,” said Gassler.

Chris Gardner, construction manager for Habitat for Humanity Georgetown County said this is the first version of HOPE and when it’s finished, it will have a bedroom, kitchen, full bathroom, and a washer and dryer for laundry.

“We’re building inside a metal box at less than 300 sq. ft.,” said Gardner. “It’s just out of the ordinary.”

Some of the next steps include cutting out the window spaces and choosing a paint color.

Gassler said they’re hopeful they’ll finish the prototype within the next three to four months, creating a new beginning for many people.

“It brings people hope and yet it conveys the fact that there’s going to be hope,” said Gassler.

Once the prototype is finished, the installation phase will begin.
