After the Whistle: York College Commit Aerianna Edwards
SALISBURY, Md. – Meet Wicomico High School’s trailblazing wrestler Aerianna Edwards, the senior wrestler who has committed to York College to wrestle at the next level.
“It feels like a big accomplishment because I never thought I’d be able to make it to college in general or in sports. So to be able to do a sport and do college is amazing. And to have a bunch of colleges want me to come wrestle was an amazing feeling,” Edwards said.
To point out the obvious, for the past three seasons, she’s been one of the few female wrestlers in the Bayside Conference, wrestling against other girls and boy wrestlers from other schools. In her years on varsity, she has 13-9 overall record, 10-6 against girls and 3-3 against boys. She said to have the success that she did there’s a lot of work that you have to put in.
“It was a combination of a whole bunch of things, just staying disciplined, determined, not giving up because you’re a girl, you’re less than. You can’t do it. But in fact, if you keep pushing through it, you can do it and show that women can wrestle. And it’s an extremely important sport to show that women can do it,” she said.
Being a trailblazer will be apart of her legacy on the shore, and she wants other girls to follow in her foot steps.
“I love to encourage anyone to do a sport that is completely new to them, but encouraging wrestling for women. I try to encourage Any little girl, any girl in high school, junior, seniors, any of them, hey, come join it. It’s an amazing sport. It’ll teach you a lot,” she said.
