Elkhart Co. prosecutor asks the public to stop spreading rumors about the Martin’s shooting
ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - The Elkhart County Prosecutor asked the public to stop spreading rumors on social media about the shooting at a Martin’s in Elkhart Monday night.
During a news conference to provide updated information about the shooting, Vicki Becker said the misinformation was hurtful to the families of the victims.
“I want to conclude my comments with a request for people to stop spreading gossip, rumors and information that is second, third, fourth-hand that seems interesting and seems scandalous but is irresponsible and not true,” Becker said. “Out of respect for all that have experienced this unspeakable trauma and are trying to navigate the emotions and the circumstances of being exposed to this and the circumstances of the healing process as necessary, seeing false information out there trying to tell the story for you interferes with that healing process and it needs to stop. Social media is not a platform that we should be giving any credibility when it comes to news. And for those of you who are doing it, stop now because the misinformation is causing significant harm to those who are traumatized by this event.”
