This ‘Darkness’ Riddle Actually Has a Light, Funny Answer
We love a good puzzle or brain teaser around here, so when we heard about a great new riddle bouncing around the internet, we just had to check it out. And let us tell you, we were not disappointed.
A lot of riddles have a reputation for being corny, while others are just way too obvious or overused that they’ve essentially become clichés at this point. So it was definitely refreshing to come across a truly unique one we hadn’t heard before on a website called Science Trends. The best part? It’s a riddle that asks the age-old question at the end: “What am I?” While several “What am I?” riddles can be equally entertaining and head-scratching, we think this particular one is our favorite one yet.
It asks us all: “I can fly, but I have no wings. I can cry, but I have no eyes. Wherever I go, darkness follows me. What am I?”
It’s certainly a strange riddle, for many reasons. First of all, it’s hard for us to think of something off the top of our heads that can fly but doesn’t have wings. Most flying animals are out of the running already (unless flying squirrels count). Heck, even most man-made inventions that are able to fly — such as planes — include wings as part of their features. Secondly, we want to know who or what in the world is able to cry without having eyes. Based on what we know about tears, eyes seem like a pretty darn important part of the equation. Lastly, when we combine those two seemingly impossible abilities with the idea of “darkness” following the riddle’s subject, we’re about to throw our hands up in confusion.
But if you’re feeling like you might give up as well, you might only need to look up to get the clue you need. Perhaps you might even try looking up at the sky… Get it?
If you’re still confused, here’s your answer to the riddle: It’s a cloud.
Give yourself a pat on the back if you got it right. That was tricky!
