Jack Wright named 22nd head football coach at MGCCC
Back in 2007, Steve Campbell led Mississippi Gulf Coast to its last football national championship. Today, he was named the new head coach at South Alabama.
Meanwhile, his son, Steven Campbell Jr., introduced his first coaching hire as the athletic director at his dad’s old stomping grounds. With that, a new era of Bulldog football has officially begun at MGCCC.
Jack Wright most recently served as a high school offensive coordinator following a one year stint as the offensive line coach at Southern Miss. Prior to that, he coached elsewhere in the MACJC, leading Northwest Mississippi Community College to a national title in 2015.
Campbell says that was a big selling point on his final decision. Wright says he wouldn’t be in the blue if he didn’t plan on doing that same thing up at Perk. “That’s correct. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think that you could go all the way here. Of course like I said in the press conference, it takes a little bit of luck when it comes to getting the right coaches, the right players and maybe even in a game or two to go all the way. But I think this is a place where you can get those kind of people around you, and finish the deal.”
Wright replaces Chad Huff, who went 26-14 overall during his four years with the Bulldogs. Wright says he’s coached against Gulf Coast three times, amassing a record of 2-1 in those games.
