Located in the original Edison building, this location has gone through a lot of change from being a place where individuals could pay their bills and get items repaired to multiple restaurants. The history of the building is so cool! Make sure to look up the details!
Since being a restaurant, this spot has gone through 3 renovations. I can't compare to the past, but this one is cute. Definitely a girlie vibe, but lots of dudes come here too.
My husband sat in the bar so we could people watch. Great location by the window (table for 2) and views of the restaurant, patio, and the outside area.
We started off with a couple of cocktails. For dinner, we ordered the salmon, short ribs, and the wild mushrooms. Good flavors and portion sizes. We weren't offered a dessert menu to peak at but we saw others indulging and they are giant. Definitely Instagramable desserts!
I probably would have ordered one for a few bites and a lot of pictures.
We came on a Friday night. They only take reservations for 3 or more people. We had no problem getting a seat!Helpful 9Thanks 1Love this 10Oh no 0 - May 16, 2024
Went here for Mother's Day brunch. The staff was dressed to impress. Everyone walking by and bringing anything to the table said "Happy Mother's Day" with smiles. Everyone made you feel welcomed and special. It looked lively and bright.
We had the calamari appetizer. We had the Branzino and red velvet pancakes. The pancakes looked decadent. The branzino was amazing. I also had a Paloma and sei mei they were both great. I recommend the sei mei. When I go back I will be having it again with the branzino.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 13, 2025Updated review
I am not sure why I keep giving 220 Merrill chance after chance but this place just isn't worth the hype. Sure the ambiance is nice but the food misses the mark and the prices are not worth it. Our almost $30 salads were drowning in dressing and lacking in the uncharged protein. The coffee at brunch was undrinkable. Our server kept calling us "the ladies" like what do the ladies want to drink, what are the ladies celebrating. It was so very strange. Our server also seemed unknowledable about gluten free menu items and had to keep coming back to correct the information. The tables are literally jam packed on top of each other which has to be a servers nightmare and as a guest it felt intrusive. I think I am done giving them chances.
Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 28, 2018Previous reviewOur evening started off as a very upscale fine dining experience. Our server Wayne, was extraordinary. He was well versed in the menu, patient with our party of 8 and made excellent suggestions. He was honest with recommendations indicating which dishes were best compared to others. He is also quite good at the upsell, hooking me on adding a scallop to my meal.
There were a few things they were not offering the night we came, as apparently they are in the process of switching to their summer menu. They also ran out of one of their signature cocktails with the pineapple. We ordered the oysters and calamari for appetizers. Those who ate the calamari enjoyed it but the oysters were not my favorite. They did not seem to be super fresh and I've had better elsewhere in the area. The beet salad was good and large enough for two to share. My stepdad ordered the wedge salad but we were confused when it arrived chopped up, doesn't that defeat the purpose of a wedge?
Everyone enjoyed their entrees. I had the halibut special and it was very tatsy however my fish was slightly over cooked. Those ordering the steaks said they were outstanding. They also had a marlin special which you don't see often that one of us ordered and really enjoyed. Their wine list is very impressive and Wayne was great at making suggestions.
Here is where things out confusing. As soon as it go dark outside we noticed a weird shift occur. The music changed from nice and quite and relaxing to bass pumping dance party. Then little by little scantily clad young twenty something girls started rolling in looking like the Kardashian's. Young ladies who literally had very little clothing on started flirting with old men, presumably rich ones. This is when this high end restaurant basically turned into a nightclub. It was confusing and not at all what you expect when your out to dinner at a classy restaurant. I would recommend coming earlier in the evening to avoid this debacle, although it was good people watching. - Mar 25, 2024
My friends and I visited here in warmer weather and we were able to sit out on the patio. It was cute and cozy!
I started out with the oysters which were fresh and delicious. Sticking to the seafood theme, I went with the Birmingham salad, which had calamari, shrimp, avocado, and a light dressing. It was very filling!
The waitstaff was friendly and helpful, and also knowledgeable about their menu, and able to accommodate my friend with a dairy allergy. I'd come back here againHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jan 23, 2024
Back "home" in the D for a quick 48 hours, I was able to squeeze in a visit with friends and we ended up here at 220 Merrill. It was this past Saturday evening, and my friend Sloan picked me up from the airport ... My flight landed DTW at 7:30 and we were at a table meeting our friends Ali and Evan for drinks / dinner at 220 Merrill by 8:30. Thanks to Ali and Evan for scoring the table in the bar for all of us!
It was a cold evening, so I so appreciated the valet parking situation (and the one working heat lamp outside on the tail end) too!
I was amazed with how crowded the place was considering the freezing cold weather and darkness outside! It was a fun ambiance with great energy but it was super loud... I couldn't hear half the conversation that Ali and Sloan were having right next to me and I don't think Evan could hear half of what I was saying either!
Service was attentive... we had drinks pretty quickly and food shortly after. Everyone enjoyed the food they had including a Greek Salad, Steak, Truffle Fries, Oysters and Shrimp Cocktail. (Thanks Sloan for sharing those last three items with me... I needed some comfort food that night and our selections were perfect!).
220 Merrill has quite the history, so if you find yourself in the area seeking American cuisine and/or a full bar in an upscale, fun albeit a bit loud environment, check it out!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jan 5, 2025
Service was great. Got seated right away. Love the decor and lighting. Started with the tuna tartare appetizer which was delicious. Mediterranean salad was pretty good but could be better -- needs more of the yummy beets. Short rib was amazing. Definitely coming back soon

Really impressed with the service here. Our waiter Shannon was outstanding and really took care of us. The food was great I really enjoyed the sirloin tips with garlic toast and banana fosters pancakes.
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jun 12, 2016Previous reviewMy friend and I went here for brunch and I am so glad we did. The food was delicious. The menu had so many options to choose from we didn't know what to order, but our waitress recommended we try 3 dishes and share. So we chose the bananas foster French toast, chicken and waffles, and blueberry lemon ricotta pancakes.
The chicken and waffles were fantastic! It was my favorite dish of the 3. Chicken was crispy on outside and juicy on the inside. The waffles were cooked perfectly and had great flavor.
The bananas foster French toast was my close 2nd. It had great flavor, bananas foster syrup was great, but there was not a lot of it. I asked for more and they wanted to charge me $3 for it.
The pancakes were good, I'm not a big fan of ricotta but my friend loved them and ranked the dish her fave of the 3. I think I would have like it more if there were more lemon curd on the pancakes and if the blueberries were cooked in the batter, but overall it was good.
I do plan on going back and if the food is still good and if they don't scrimp on the syrup I'll change my rating.
