I'm a 3rd Generation Baozi/Mantou maker. My grandpa used to sell baozi and mantou in Taiwan so we've come full circle. Except, this time around, I wanted to improve on the old prototype. Gone are the MSG and "color treated" meats you see in Chinatown. I use all-natural antibiotic- and hormone-free pork and skirt steak. Our Guerilla Cooking Methods are also 90% energy efficient and remove a lot of barriers to entry for young, independent, small-businesses. Hopefully you all appreciate the effort to do our part for the environment while still delivering the tastiest gua bao around!

If I could describe this place in one word, it would be "icky". When you first walk in, you're welcomed into a tight, dark area with loud music. There are only a few tables here, so it can easily get cramped when more than 3 parties are here at once. This place is definitely not for large groups. On top of that, everything here feels dirty. I'm not one to harshly judge a place based on ambiance, but the tables and countertops are sticky, and there was trash on the floor.
The bao wasn't bad, but definitely overhyped. The bao part and the fillings were average, but everything in the place looked so dirty that I didn't want to touch my food. After eating the bao, I was not impressed. There wasn't anything special about it. It just tasted like someone slapped meat and bao together and decided to up charge it. The gross ambiance of the place definitely made a mediocre bao taste worse.
Overall, I don't see myself coming back here or recommending this place to friends. Everything from the food, ambiance, and service was either mediocre or lacking.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Aug 13, 2019
First off, I love me some Eddie Huang and I've been dying to try Baohaus but the stars haven't aligned for me to do so. But lastnight, it was my time. I was near union square and I hadn't had dinner yet so this was my time to try some of Eddie's baos (I hope that didn't sound dirty) lol.
When you walk in it you are immediately greeted by a friendly cashier/server/front man and he is ready to help. The menu is on the counter so once you are next in line you should know what you want. There was no rush but some seats opened up and we wanted to get them. My original plan was to eat the baos while walking but since there were seats available I was able to sit and savor my food.
The location is small. I can't imagine more than 10 people can fit at once but this place is a quick bite spot and I'm not mad at that.
I ordered the birdhaus bao (I usually go for pork bao's) based on solely the description. How could you resist fried chicken in a soft fluffy bao?! And my partner got the Spiceland Bao (fried chicken bao is some hellishly hot sauce). Both bao's were served quickly and were hot. The price ranged from about $5-6 per bao which is a bit expensive because you can get some really great baos in Queens for cheaper but we are in Manhattan and I get it. The birdhaus was seasoned well and quite simply delish. The Spiceland bao's sauce dripped onto my bao and i got a few drops of the heat. My lips were on fire. So if you like HEAT, go for the spiceland, if you do not like heat avoid it or get lots of water.
The bao was not sticky and the chicken was extra crispy.
A guy next to me inhaled one of the rice bowls (I will say it looked good) which lead me to believe I have to go back to try one of the rice bowls in the near future.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Aug 28, 2019
This place showed up on a list of good cheap eats in New York, so we decided to give it a try.
Sure, it was a little cheap at like $6 for one of the buns, but the buns were quite tiny. The food quality though wasn't all that great. We had the fried chicken and the pork belly one, and it didn't taste all that good.
Seating is also a little limited inside.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 25, 2020
Walk into a edge house with the smell of cherry flavored medicine all around.
It was card only so I was taken aback, thankfully my friend had her card on her. There's limited seating but we came on a weekday so we easily got seats without even waiting. It was suppose to open at 11:30 but they didn't pick up the phone until a hour later. Only then was I able to confirm that they were ope
I got the Birdhaus for $5 (tax not included). The flavors didnt mix well. Part of the bao was wet and soggy. The bao was a bit sweet plus the peanut sauce. But it was such a bad combination. They didn't mesh well or complement each other. I rather get the popeyes chicken sandwich, which is less expensive and more fulfilling. This bao wasnt even the size of my hand. It didn't taste good nor was it worth it. The chicken lacked flavor. I could taste all these flavors separately but they didn't go well together, I emphasize that.
I would not come here again. Overhyped and dissatisfying.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Katrina H.Brentwood, CA3153410Jun 30, 2023

I've been following Eddie on Vice since he started his video blogs. While in the city I had to checkout BaoHaus and try the pork belly baos.
Inside there is limited seating since the space is small. There is a long community table with bar stools. Along the wall is a counter top with around 8 bar stools. They have a compact unisex restroom which is a plus.
I ordered the chairman and the birdhaus. These are both open faced baos. The chairman comes with a fatty braised pork belly, crushed peanuts, Taiwanese red sugar, and cilantro. The birdhaus comes with a piece of fried chicken which has been brined in special seasoning, Taiwanese red sugar, and cilantro. The chairman bao was my favorite. The thick fatty cut of pork belly melted in my mouth. I initially ordered 3, but went back for another 3.
At $5 a pop BoaHaus can be pricey, but worth a visit.Helpful 14Thanks 0Love this 16Oh no 0 - Dec 26, 2018
BaoHaus is very hipster-y and has a bit of a different vibe from the average Asian establishment. We're living in Eddie Haung's world. The place is small, dimly lit, and has underground hip-hop music playing. The servers dance, posters are pasted on the walls, and it generally looks like a Hot Topic store
Menu is straightforward and one page, ordered:
- Chairman Bao (3/5). Yummy but a little too much in terms of the ratio of pork belly fat to meat. The first bite was good but it started to numb my mouth
- Birdhaus Bao (4/5). Tasty and similar to other baos I've had (e.g. Ippudo on NYU's campus)
Is it the best gua bao spot? Probably not, but it's worth a visit to try something familiar, yet differentHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 25, 2018
Went for Lunch
Food - 5/5. Bao buns were small or might have just seemed small due to the gigantic meat that is placed between them. Buns themselves were fluffy and held well even when lifted with the large fillings. Chicken had a lot of crunchy fritters for its batter and the meat was well seasoned and juicy. Aioli gave the chicken a little creaminess to balance out the crunch. Pork belly was rendered extremely well. Every bite was rich with pork flavor and had awesome balance between meat and fat. The skin had a slight crust to it for texture that remained super tender. Both of the baos had sprinkles of peanuts and red sugar which added a delightful little crunch, especially to the pork belly, with a hint of sweetness.
Service - 4/5. Low-key service where they call when your order is ready. They were kind enough to bring the food to our chairs.
Value - 5/5. These delicious baos with their huge chunks of protein are only $5.50 or less. A few of them will satisfy your cravings although you might want more because they are very good. Great little eatery!

Very tasty taiwanese baos..
We had the birdhaus bao,Chairman bao and the fried fish bao.
Birdhaus and Chairman bao were very tasty.
I felt the fried fish bao was boring and not as tasty as the others we tried.
I wish they had more seatingHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 12, 2019
Is it good? YES. Is it pricey? Yeah! Is it small? Duhhh.
I love a good piece of pork belly, and BaoHaus does it quite well. On both occasions, I've had pieces that were absolutely tender and easy to bite into, but at the same time...is a baby piece. It looks like it's bursting out of the bun, but the bun itself isn't that big. Eating one won't satisfy you, but eating two pieces of almost pure fat also isn't satisfying either!
Very small space, narrow counter/ordering setup, and you'll smell like grease if you decide to stay there to eat.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
