Q:
Why did Brooklyn star close??? This place was amazing
A:
Probably concerned about the looming "L" Subway Train closure coming April 2019. Rents have been on the downswing ever since that announcement come out. Great place! Hope they reopen somewhere else.

I am DEVASTATED that this place is closing down at the end of the month. :'( I literally only found this place a month ago (only 4 stops away from us) and I meant to bring Raymond here on a date ... guess I have to do it within the next week. This place was an absolute gem; I came here with a group of 6 on a friend's suggestion on a Friday night and there was no wait. The food was amazing, the service was friendly (AND they took a beautiful photo of us with my DSLR - seriously, no one ever gets that right), and the prices were ridiculously good value.
+ Bone Marrow (5/5) - This is pretty much the main reason I wanted to come back; I love bone marrow so much, but it's usually such a luxury because it's so expensive. We shared this amongst the 6 of us, and it was like a neverending pile of decadent, flavorful marrow. The onion confiture went with it perfectly, and I could've just eaten an entire meal of this if I were feeling ultra fancy.
+ Happy hour poutine (4/5) - This was super cheap ($5?) since it was a happy hour poutine, but I was disappointed that there were only 1-2 pieces of meat. Maybe just 1? I feel like I was the only one who got to eat it, though, so I feel kinda bad, but it was truly delicious - tender, flavorful, moist. It was definitely an unconventional poutine; I don't mind that it wasn't fries, but I felt like it could've used more gravy and cheese to pull it together better.
+ Country fried steak (4/5) - I've never had this before, but it was great. Unfortunately I don't remember it as well because I was really focused on the bone marrow. @_@
+ Mac & cheese (4/5) - This was great comfort food, cheesy and creamy. At this point, though, we were coming to terms with how rich and carb-heavy our meal was LOL.
I guess this review is kind of moot since Brooklyn Star is closing down, but I wanted to write this to remember it by. I had an amazing dinner here, and I'll definitely come check it out one last time before it goes.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 332305346May 20, 2018Updated review
Thank you Brooklyn Star for everything! So sad this place is closing down at the end of the month :(
We lived down the street for over 5 years and this was one of our go-to's.
Glad we got to dine here one final time and the meatloaf sandwich will always go down as epic.
Nothing but love to this place, the chefs, owners, bartenders,waiters/waitresses and everyone connected to it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jul 6, 2016Previous reviewI am here so much I should just update this to 5 stars. Hands down best meatloaf sandwich. Great romaine salad, great scotch in egg, great Potok belly, great bloody Mary's, great shrimp and grits. I can keep going!! Just come here for delicious southern food.
Great bartenders too :)Dec 2, 2012Previous reviewTwo words: Meatloaf Sandwich. It's just simply amazing!! As is the Mac and Cheese!
Roasted chicken was pretty good and as was the Bone Marrow. The pig tails were kind of meh, so I would not recommend those. Overall very good comfort food that's good for dinner and late night. I wish it was a little cheaper, but what can you do. Def. a recommendable spot! - Mar 22, 2016
Food: We came for brunch and I have one word for this place "Amazing!" We ordered the shrimp and grits and also the pork chops. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the grits was also. The pork chop was nice and thin, very tender and the breading was amazing.
The decor is very chill and laid back and the staff friendly. This is my new brunch spot for sure.
Brew: Great beers and cocktails, something for everyone.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 56362724011Jan 18, 2016
A brunchtime mecca that's surely always going to be a madhouse as long as they're doling out food this good. Yes, the wait time is a bit of a bummer. But all that angst will fade away the minute you're presented with a steaming skillet of homemade bacon mac & cheese. A HUGE skillet for that matter, which can definitely be shared, and is crazily reasonably prices.
The vibe in here is cozy hipster chic, with lots of wood paneling and drinks served up in mason jars. And it's one of those menus that will leave you flummoxed about what to choose, and immediately anxious to come back to sample even more of the offerings.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jess J.Brooklyn, NY277277645May 13, 2018
Bustling comfort food place that will give you the biggest food coma. Came on a Sunday night since there are rumors that the place is due to close at the end of the month.
Started out with spicy fried duck wings, so tender and infused with sweet and spicy sauce that you can't but lick clean your fingers after. Biscuits were flurry and deliciously buttery. We opted for the special Tripe Chilli, which is very unique, though a bit salty.
The fried steak with mashed potatoes and peppery gravy sent us half way into a dreamy food coma, then the meatloaf sandwich pushed us over the line (also had bacon and mashed potato bits inside). Even the slaw and collard greens on the side could not balance out the heaviness we felt.
Portions are big, order wisely depending on how hungry you are or else prepare for the onset of a full tummy for the rest of the day.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - German P.Brooklyn, NY043May 27, 2018
So far this has been the best restaurant and American food I have ever eaten, I went for the first time on Friday , and had to go back the next day for more!. Both times were amazing, I had the country fried stake (dinner menu), and the ham stake( brunch) both amazing, .. their cocktails were great too, made just right.. and the service a good as it can get , very nice and friendly.
I'm so sad to find out they will be closing soon , I'll try to come back as much as I can till it closes (June 3rd, I believe ) and hope to encounter something like this again in my life.
If u see this before June 3rd I highly recommend to go check it out.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 29, 2018

Brooklyn Star is quite possible one of the best restaurants in all of Brooklyn. This gem is situated near the Lorimer stop in Northern Williamsburg, and brings together the best of Brooklyn's restaurant scene. Stellar food, relaxing ambience, and friendly service. They almost always have seating available with large 4 person tables at the front, and a big backroom full of larger tables and booths. The price can get on the steeper side, depending on the dish, but the portions are pretty large, and all-in-all, this place is WELL worth every penny.
This was my 3rd or 4th time coming to Brooklyn Star, but it's almost always on point, and tonight was no exception. I met up with some friends for drinks and food. To start, two of us had the Juniper run cocktail (~$6 happy hour price from 4-7pm), which was gin, muddled strawberry, and I believe a citrus add-in, and my god was it refreshing. To be honest, I don't normally drink cocktails often but I'll definitely start at this place. We then ordered the cornbread and butter, which was fresh out of the oven and seemed to melt in your mouth. Seriously, such a good choice for an appetizer if you want to split a dish, but eat too much if you get full quickly, because the main entrees are where it's at.
I try to be adventurous but I almost always go for the meatloaf sandwich with potato chips ($15) because it really IS that good. The sandwich comes with delicious, homemade meatloaf that's not too thick- but just enough to be hearty -in between two fluffy slices of bread. it also comes with a sauce, that I'm not familiar with, but adds a nice zing. The chips are a sizeable and seasoned side portion that complement the overall taste of the sandwich, without overpowering or heavy. My friends got the country fried steak and fried chicken family dinner (available on Sundays and Mondays), which are also to die for. That fried chicken tho.
This place pretty much hits every box on my checklist. Seriously, get to this place if you haven't already. Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in all of New York City.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - John M.Brooklyn, New York, NY4724928May 9, 2017
Brooklyn Star is where the Brooklyn hipster rediscovers their inner Southerner. The service and food is friendly and efficient, and it deserves the fantastic score it already has.
I've visited The Brooklyn Star a number of times, and each time I've been greeted by a friendly server and a large bottle of water. The bar sits at the front left side of the restaurant, and I've almost always sat in what I'll call "cocktail" tables.
This time, the bartender came to our table at one point and offered to make me a non-alcoholic drink...I was SO happy to have something delicious to make me feel like I was just like everyone else. :-) Not to mention, it was GREAT. I don't know his name, but it was on Monday, May 8th at 7:15pm.
My friend Rachel and I shared the fried chicken dinner, and this is where I have to go a little down from five stars. I LOVE southern food. I'm from the South, and very little brings me as much comfort. However, their version of Southern is always JUST a little off from perfect for me.
For instance, the fried chicken wasn't QUITE as good as the stuff I've had in Tennessee. The collard greens are just a BIT too runny, the mac and cheese a bit too fancy, and the cornbread a pinch too brown. It's these little things that remind me that it's Brooklyn's version.
I won't stop going here just because the food isn't my version of perfect. Such an amazing spot and TOTALLY worth a visit.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Tiffany W.Lexington, KY20182194Sep 29, 2017
I'll start with my favorite thing here: the biscuits. I love biscuits and always get them any time I go out to breakfast or brunch, and theirs were outstanding.
I ordered a cinnamon roll to share with the table and thought it was good enough. I liked that it had pecans, but it could have used more icing for how big it was.
I ordered chicken and waffles for my entree. I think I might just not be a big fan of chicken and waffles in general, because I felt they were lacking something. The apple butter was tasty, but I'm not sure if it was right for this dish - I would have preferred some kind of syrup to make it less dry. The candied grapefruit it came with was a unique treat unlike anything I'd tried before.
It's more like a 3.5 for me, but I'll give this place 4 stars because I think I might have just ordered something that wasn't right for me. I hope I get a chance to come back and try other things on their menu.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
