Had a lovely brioche croissant and coffee for 4 dollars. Great value and delicious. The bakery itself smells lovely, like an old fashioned kind. Have not tried anything else yet

In looking for bolillos, i encountered El Molino Bakery. I was confused upon entering as they have a menu of food, fresh juices, and ice cream in addition to cakes, sweet bread and bolillos. Place is a bit disorganized, messy and not very clean. I almost walked out, but i needed bolillos and I was pressed for time. Bread was placed at the center of the store in a cart with pull out trays. I found this odd, unappealing and inconvenient!
When I requested a tray to choose my bread, the lady behind the counter pointed to a used stash of trays sitting on the counter above the ice cream bin. Not until I told her the trays were used did she proceed to provide a clean one.
Also, there are no prices displayed anywhere, i find this a tad annoying as I like to tally up my order before paying to prevent being overcharged.
Lady stated all sweet bread have different prices....well that was "helpful"!
They also have ready made cakes - without prices displayed of course
Only ended up buying bolillos...price was 2x$1.
Not sure I will return, might just end up at the grocery store until i find a better place.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Frank P.Gardena, CA382635May 23, 2024

Right after .. will update if any serious medical issue arises..Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michaela S.Torrance, CA010Nov 18, 2024
First of all, i'm not sure what her name is but the blonde haired lady is so rude. Not sure what her problem is. My friend went to go get some goodies from here and it wasn't even close to closing time yet. It was around 8:30 pm and this lady runs to the door before my friend gets there and says with a rude tone "We're closed!" they close at 9:00 pm like it says on the website. And this wasn't even the first time they've closed earlier than normal, they just stare at you and won't let you in. We enjoy the goodies, but. We wish the customer service was better and didn't treat us so rudely. The only reason we come back is because of Tres Leche and the flan is really good.

I bought some sweet bread and it was dry and not fresh. I thought it was weird that they have the bread just sitting on racks in the middle of the store. However, I decided to still purchase the bread against my better judgment because I was in a rush.
I really did myself a disservice because I ended up having to go somewhere else and purchase more sweet bread. I ended up just throwing out the two boxes of bread.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kathelyn M.Hawthorne, CA037Sep 14, 2024

Poor service. And they're selling cannoli and donuts that are outside and mosquitos flying around. That's not good.

This is an old bakery in Lawndale and many years ago it was the best one around. I have gone there here and there, giving them a chance but every time I'm disappointed. The only thing that is fresh that I HAVE TRIED are the bolillos, I assume they sell enough to make those daily. This weekend and my last visit, I purchased a slice of cake. The frosting, cake and strawberry glaze was hard. Clearly these are old cakes that didn't sell and they slice them hoping to sell them. By the way they are $6 a slice for old cake! The vibe is weird, the workers have no customer service and their bread isn't fresh. Another visit I asked if their sweet bread was made that morning and they were bothered and said yes but touching the bread with the thongs I couldn't even push the bread down! That's hard bread not fresh... too bad.

3/2/24 UPDATE: I was in the neighborhood and the other bakery I went to was having some construction done and was not open, so after a bit of deliberation I decided to stop at El Molino Real despite my promise to never again go there. Score! Much better experience. The greeting was friendly, and I got a slice of cake that was actually fresh and delicious. Hint: Use the tongs to lightly tap the red gel on the strawberry, if it is not gummy, it is fresh. I also tried a cannoli ($3) which was tasty but not authentic so I wouldn't get that again. The cream horn was fresh and tasty as well. Again, use the tongs to lightly tap the filling and you can tell if it is fresh or starting to get gummy. I wondered if perhaps there was a new owner but definitely not. They give you a tray to put your selection on; not only are the tongs not washed between each customer but the waxed paper on the tray still has crumbs from whoever else used it. So the same cheapskate must still own the place. You will notice that there are trays of baked goods sitting out in the open with no covering too. In the summer I'm sure there will be flies so I definitely recommend making your selections from the cases along the wall.

I bought a piece of cake today and I tasted it before I drove home, it was dry and obviously several days old, and the frosting was starting to get gummy. The cashier had to call the owner to approve my getting a different piece. She was told that I could swap out the cake just this once "because she's losing $ on the piece that they have to throw away." Fortunately the second piece was ok as I got it from the front refrigerated case instead of the one along the wall. Well, there's two things wrong here: if you have a lot of leftovers then you're making too much cake. Second, stale cake should be thrown away rather than sell it to unsuspecting customers. Also, the cashier kept telling me that she only works Saturdays so she doesn't know. I told her, anyone can tell this cake is old and I'm not blaming you. It wouldn't surprise me if they took the stale piece and tried to sell it. What cheapskates! Someone is going to get sick from food poisoning here if they haven't already.
Jan 22, 2022Previous reviewAgain, the place has its faults, and the staff is not particularly friendly to non-Spanish speaking people, but I'm now in love with the vanilla layer cake with either fresh strawberries or chocolate drizzle. You can order an entire cake or by the slice, and the slice will feed 2-3 people. The frosting is amazing, smooth and not too sweet. Sometimes the bottom layer is dulce de leche which would be too rich if it were the entire cake but just right for the bottom layer. I'm a fan!
Mar 8, 2018Previous reviewThis place definitely has its faults but I'm hopelessly in love with the pastries shaped like a horn with a custardy, pudding-like filling. I've tried a few of the other baked goods but always come back to this one. It's a good deal for $1.50. And no, El Super just a door down does not have much of a selection; they may be fresher, but rather bland IMO.
That being said, the staff at El Molino is not particularly friendly, and you never know if the plastic trays you use for the self-service items have been washed from the last customer. They used to have tissue paper for them, which gave way to smaller pieces of tissue paper, which they would then use to wrap the pastries, but today all they had were the plastic trays with ONE set of tongs and no tissue paper, although they did wrap my items with paper, not sure why they're hiding it. The thing I don't like is that they sell day-old pastries for full price. One time I got the cream-filled horn and the custard at the end had a rubbery texture so I knew it wasn't fresh. Today I was there and the woman behind the counter told me that all of the items in the case were made yesterday. Most bakeries make fresh pastries daily and sell day-old items at a reduced price, not here! I guess next time I'll call ahead and try to hit them up when everything was made that day.
