The best taco truck I've come across! The meat is very tender and not super fatty! I normally get the asada tacos. However, I also recommend the burritos as well.
They are very efficient, and from what I've observed they recently put tables and chairs out for your convenience! I recommend this truck to all my friends and family!
I am also thinking about asking them about catering for my birthday party!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 9, 2025
El Tio Juan is the taco truck version of the restaurant over on International, and it holds its own. A solid 4.5/5 in my book.
Parking was easy. The menu is extensive, with all the usual meats like al pastor (though no trompo?), chorizo, and carne asada plus some less common but always welcome options like pollo adobado, chicharrones, tripas, birria, and lengua. I'll definitely be back for the birria next time.
I ordered chorizo, al pastor, and carne asada. The al pastor was a little oily--definitely not cut from a trompo--but still flavorful. The chorizo was great, and the carne asada was my favorite, well-seasoned and just really solid overall. The accompaniments were also a nice touch: a cucumber slice, radish, and a grilled pepper. That grilled pepper, absolute fire--the hottest thing I ate that night, made smoke come out of my ears. That's what the radish is for, though--a break-the-glass-in-case-of-emergency situation to cool things down.
One thing that stood out--besides the tacos--was the unexpected menu items. Burgers, hot dogs, and fries aren't what you'd expect from a truck focused on traditional Mexican street food, but they didn't take away from the experience. And the fact that they serve Loard's Ice Cream? Huge bonus. Loard's is an East Bay staple--around here, it's Loard's or nothing. They had six or eight flavors, all solid picks, and it was a great way to end the meal.
The tacos were small but appropriately sized for the price--good value for money. The tortillas were either store-bought or handmade but left sitting for a while--not exactly fresh, but they held together just fine. The salsa roja had great flavor, but I wanted more heat. I even double-checked--it was the hottest one they had, but it just wasn't bringing the fire.
The setup was nice, with comfortable outdoor seating and fold-out chairs. The people running the truck were friendly and spoke English, but my Spanish came in handy for a few menu questions. Beyond the burgers, fries, and burritos, the focus is still traditional Mexican street food, and they do it well. I'll definitely be back to try the birria, and of course, another scoop of Loard's.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 29, 2025
First time at this taco truck and I loved that they had Loards Ice Cream and dessert options as well as tacos and burritos. I loved the ice cream scoop on a waffle cone. I got the Burgundy cherry ice cream flavor. The birria quesadilla was very good I would definitely get it again. The asada burrito's were also good. All 3 desserts were delicious, not bakery delicious but a nice treat after your meal, I'm not complaining. I love the convince of having ice cream and burritos so close to my mom's house. It's literally right down the street.

My fiance and I like coming here when we go to Lake Merritt for a hike/walk.
This taco truck serves all the dishes a traditional mexican restaurant has AND ice cream, how cool is that?!
The truck also partners with Green Carnation Bakery in Oakland to provide delicious desserts!
We usually order carnitas, birria, spicy chicken tacos and a birria quesadilla. We love to combine the carrot cake with a scoop of cookies and cream ice cream! It's absolutely delicious!
The staff is always friendly and the food is ready in minutes. We love that parking is available right next to the truck.
There is no seating but we sometimes eat standing up on the side of the truck.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 13, 2023
Good tacos, usually comes out in 5 minutes ish if they're not busy, price is comparable to other trucks. Only thing are the portions for the tacos are hit and miss, sometimes it's a good amount and sometimes very little.
Burritos are also pretty slim, although I guess comparable to taquerias that are slightly bigger but also cost more. I'd recommend you come here and try it for yourself.
It's my go to based on convenience and always hits the spot :) also CASH ONLYHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Diana M.Alameda, CA112101Dec 21, 2024
The best tacos, sopes and flautas!
Their carne asada is juicy and tender. Their salsas are ALWAYS flavorful, the ir horchata is authentic, hands down, the best lonchera in town!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Andrea R.San Francisco, CA2531113May 4, 2024
1st of all, lemme wipe my drool off. I've been coming to el tio juan for the past 6 years and have yet to find a taco truck I like more. The asada and al pastor always hit & the salsa is perfect. The tortillas are also slightly toasted. In my opinion, the star of el tio juan is the sopes they have :,) they have such a nice crunch to them & are topped off with cabbage, cheese & and a tomato based salsa (you can ask for green salsa if you prefer that) & your choice of meat. I never regret making the drive out to El Tio Juan, so good.

Super delicious, authentic tacos. Went back 3 times in one day. Would recommend trying all, but particularly loved the pastor, carnitas, chorizo, and pollo adobado.

I been coming here for years , I just bit into the grill onions and was immediately disgusting as the onion had gone bad and had mold. I confronted the people there on one of the ladies talk to the young man in Spanish saying there was a little mold on the onion Now he wants to come up to me (doesn't know I speak Spanish or just doesn't care) and he's gonna lie to me and say it's only dirt. We both look at each other and I just know he wasn't offer me nothing not even a sorry.
