Off-season November on a Saturday, we stopped in for lunch today at the Goose Berry Patch, after fishing at Brush Hollow Reservoir all morning. The owner greeted us at the door, we walked through what may have once been the farmhouse's dining room into bigger room of tables and classic Goose Berry Patch country decor. The full buffet was laid out looking fantastic! An eight-top of locals were in the back, but the restaurant was quiet. We sat ourselves and soon a sweet woman came and told us about the buffet option and menu. She brought us drinks and we unanimously decided on the salad and lunch buffet. I'd say it was most likely ALL homemade...pan fried chicken, mash potatoes, white country gravy, brown gravy w meatballs, spaghetti and meatballs, meatloaf (my fav!), barbeque beef, a taco casserole, green beans, and pasta salads. The clearly homemade desserts were on a little table across from the buffet, including lemon cake, chocolate pudding, brownies, red velvet cake and various cookies. We were all glad we'd agreed to revisit this Penrose landmark after all these years!

This was on our path and we were hungry. First off, this is such a cute place and they use every square inch of it amazingly! I want to come back for that reason alone!
Since it was Mother's Day, they were only offering a buffet for $22. Salad. Lots of pasta. Fried chicken. Turkey and gravy. Roast beef and gravy. Spaghetti. Fish sticks.
We both went back a few times and tried small bites of most everything. The fish sticks were still frozen on the inside the first go around but they fixed it. The spaghetti sauce was on the sweet side. I prefer a menu so perhaps we went on the wrong day.
The service was ok. I felt bad because the ladies serving us were probably moms themselves and they didn't seem happy. I felt bad for them.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Thomas P.FL, FL046Sep 28, 2024
A hidden gem in Penrose.
Don't let the rustic exterior fool you, it's rustic inside, too. But in a delightfully charming way.
The servers are kind, funny, and friendly. The food is DEE--LISH! Walking into the Goose Berry Patch is like walking back in time, and not in a manufactured retro restaurant way. These folks know home cooking, they were there (back then, back in time) and know comfort food when they make it.
We were tired and hungry when we arrived, after a 3-hour hike to the overlook in Aiken Canyon Preserve, just down the road. When we saw the golden fried chicken piled up on the buffet we were sold and didn't even look at the menu.
Imagine an old-fashioned Midwest church potluck: the aforementioned fried chicken, Swedish meatballs with mushrooms, spaghetti and meatballs, nacho casserole, flautas, bbq brisket, mac and cheese, bbq chicken, green beans, and homemade mashed potatoes (with the skins!) and cream gravy. Paradise for a tired soul.
And then there's the dessert table. Cakes, bread pudding and brownies in Pyrex dishes, like they just came out of your favorite auntie's oven. Grab a paper plate and pile on the sweets.
Then top it off with some perfectly brewed iced tea or a cold can of Coke and you'll be restored and ready for the next hike.
Price was right. Food was 4 stars out of 5 -- the fried chicken and mashed potatoes were 5 stars, the rest were 4-4.5. Desserts were 3-4 stars. Salad bar was typical.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Stephanie H.Manitou Springs, CO020Sep 5, 2024

I haven't been here since I was a little kid over 30 years ago but was visiting the area and excited to see it was open again. I was SUPER impressed, probably the best meal I've had in years. AMAZING food (the chicken, mashed potatoes, and biscuits were awesome), very friendly service, comfy atmosphere, real home-cooked feel, the menu isn't extensive but everything is/looks great, A+ all around. Don't skip this place!

It's hard to mess up breakfast food, but this place sure did. Possibly the worst breakfast I've ever had. Took 2 bites and had to stop. Sausage patties were slimy with a gelatinous texture. Biscuits had been clearly frozen, and for some reason were sweet. Sausage gravy tasted similar to Hardee's and Carl's Jr.'s gravy, only worse. Flavorless and viscosity that gags you. I'm very confused as to how this place currently has a 4.1 star rating. It literally made me lose my appetite.

We stopped here for lunch based on a recommendation from a local on our way down to Royal Gorge. It is a cute, good sized restaurant but there was not many people there.
We had the buffet which had a great salad bar and some good southern classics. Food was all very good. I will say the items order off the menu were better in my opinion and the things on the Buffet.
I bet their desserts are delicious, we were too full to try one.Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 1Oh no 1 - Bill D.SD, SD02734Jul 10, 2021
What a find!!! We've been on the road for over a month now and stumbled across this place on our way back from our trip to Pikes Peak.
Home Cooking!!! The service was great, the atmosphere was welcoming, the food on the buffet was abundant with many different choices and it was aaaahhh-licious!!!
Don't let the simpleness of the outside fool you - eat there if given the opportunity!!!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 1
