I was a patient at Haym Solomon for two months following an injury due to a fall from a ladder. Prior to my stay at this facility I spent 10 days in another. It was so grim and the help so indifferent (with a few exceptions) that I discharged myself prematurely, went home, and realized, after spending only a day and a night there, that I had put myself in danger. I then had the good fortune of entering Haym Solomon after doing research and reading excellent reviews. This facility was also recommended by a friend whose father was there for an extended period of time 20 years ago, as well as by a nurse at the hospital where I was treated (Maimonides).

The difference between the first facility (Boro Park) and Haym Solomon was dramatic. Almost to a person, the staff at this nursing home/rehab facility was kind, solicitous, competent and friendly. It was abundantly obvious to me that the morale among its employees was excellent. The protocol established regarding patient care seemed highly professional and smoothly administered. Most importantly, I felt safe and well cared for. In fact, I was somewhat hesitant to go home.

I must note here the names of some outstanding individuals who were especially caring and compassionate. They significantly helped to humanize this otherwise extremely difficult experience in my life:
Bell, Sukana, Daniel, Blanche, Adé, Suzette, Paulina (Aides); Elizabeth (nurse). I apologize for not having last names, and for forgetting the names of others who were kind and helpful. Veneer (Sp.?) (PT) and Ahmed (OT) were great. I also had wonderful, friendly contact with and above-and-beyond help from the ancillary staff, outstanding members of which are Augustina, Paul, Blanca and Pilar.

A few imperfections: Although some of the main courses were excellent (no lack of protein), the food quality from a nutritional standpoint was poor. The salads are mostly pale iceberg lettuce, the fruit offered is sometimes unripe and inedible, selections are often fatty (saturated) and sweet. Aside from oatmeal in the morning and an occasional sweet potato offering, the simple carbohydrate accompaniments on the plate (mashed potatoes, white rice, pasta) lack nutrients and fiber. Canned fruit and vegetables were offered with each meal. These might be tasty but they're nutritionally vacuous. This was NOT the fault of Rivka (bless her), my dietitian, who was extremely accommodating in response to my requests (yogurt, soy milk....). I'm sure the food is at least comparable if not better compared to other facilities. It's very difficult to feed hundreds of people within a certain budget. (I managed by ordering out, having meals delivered from Sweet Greens.)

I must say, reluctantly, that I was annoyed by the religiosity of Haym Solomon - loud announcements and prayers over the intercom system every day, limited food offerings relating to Kosher restrictions and Jewish holidays, and the relatively poor tasting products supplied by the kosher food company contracting with the facility (the worst yogurt I ever tasted). I'm Jewish, but I would rather not be imposed upon by the religious strictures of others. Furthermore, the residents at this nursing home/rehab represent a monoculture - I suppose the neighborhood in which it's located, Bensonhurst/Coney Island. The only aspect I preferred about the Borough Park facility where I stayed in the beginning was its diversity. There's virtually none at Haym Solomon, certainly not a demographic which represents Brooklyn.

Response times to my requests for help were usually good, though seriously compromised during shift break time. This should be remedied.

Finally, the window (in my very nice room) was almost impossible to open and adjust. I used all my strength to accomplish what should have been a very simple task and could have hurt myself several times. (I was not going to - should not have had to - wait for a male employee to do this for me.)

Nevertheless..., I wholeheartedly assign five stars to Haym Solomon, very much a cut above other facilities.

This nursing home has the worst staff. Mistreated my grandmother for about 4 months before she passed away. Didn't feed her when was made noted she needed to be spoon fed. Would move the phone out of her reach. Did not do physical therapy with her the 4 months she stayed there causing her to get CO2 poisoning and unfortunately stop breathing. Worst nursing home I've ever visited.

I admitted my grandmother following hip surgery and 3 weeks of acute level rehab. Prior to requiring hip surgery, my elderly grandmother was living alone with minimum daily assistance. My grandmother only has good things to say about the therapy she is receiving at this rehab facility. However, her general daily 24 hour care is another story.

The facility is continuously completely understaffed. The Rehab nurses and aides are unprofessional and rude. They have attitudes and intimidate patients. I had the facility transfer my grandmother from the rehab floor to the nursing care floor just to get her away from the physically and emotionally abusive rehab nurses and aides who hold zero professional care standards.

I have been disappointed with the facility's general lack of communication. When I admitted my grandmother to this rehab facility I provided them with my PA and HCP documentation which I have due to my grandmothers mild early on-set dementia. I told them I was to be contacted for everything related to my grandmothers care. Yet, No-one at the facility has reached out to me about her plan of care (she has been there for going on three weeks). When I call to ask questions, ask to speak to a supervisor or social worker, I either get hung up on or leave messages that don't get returned.

Example: My grandmother developed multiple large black and blue areas all over her body and a hernia feeling lump on her belly (non of which she had prior to her arrival at this facility). My grandmother showed these areas to her aides and nurses but they responded to her in a very dismissive manner. It was only when I came for a visit and asked about the concerning looking areas on my grandmother's body, did the staff decide to order a sonogram and blood tests.

Another example: When I was looking for a nurse on the rehab floor to ask about the black-n-blue and lump on my grandmothers body etc... and asked a staff (who i assumed was a nurse) what her name was or what department she worked in, she refused to answer me. This staff also refused to let me know who the head nurse was or who the supervisor was. I later learnt she was a nurse on the floor. It took hours of persistence and not giving into the staff intimidation to finally receive the names of the head nurse and the name of the supervisor on shift. Ironically, I received this information from a family member of another patient. This family member had this info because she had just finished contacting administration to report neglectful care her loved one was receiving.

While moving my grandmother to the nursing care floor secured a temporary safer solution for my 89 year old grandmother, she is now surrounded by residents who have multiple age related severe disabilities. My grandmother is now also being treated as a nursing home resident with less access to independent freedom during her free time. This whole experience is causing my grandmother a whole lot of emotional trauma. Her biggest fear in life has always been to end up in a nursing home. Now due to this rehabs lack of professionalism, she is being cared for as if she is in a nursing home and is surrounded by residents who are severely disabled.

On the topic of safety, Friday evening their was no security at the front security desk. After asking around, it turned out that the man watching TV in the rec room was in fact the security member who was suppose to be at the front desk.

This facility does not hold safe professional standards. I would not recommend placing a vulnerable loved one here unless you plan on being there with them 24 hours to look out for their well being.

My 93 yo mom was admitted close to 6 months now, and so far, we couldn't be happier. Every time I visit, the staff has been very friendly, and the place is super clean! The outside almost looks like a resort. The workers are always encouraging my mother to get out of her room and mingle with others, which she finally has been doing. She's already been to a few parties and concerts. Overall, the food has been great, and they certainly give you a lot (I couldn't believe how much was on my mother's lunch plate). Sometimes they may be understaffed, so a patient may have to wait a bit extra be attended to, but that's like any nursing home. Nurses don't magically appear with the snap of a finger.

If you want your loved ones to die, take them here. Not only for my family but a friend who's loved one died here due to neglect. It's run by incompetent "nurses" and staff. It's deplorable. We are revisiting a potential lawsuit. They do not care about their patients. Stay far away. Two deaths that I know of that will have a hole in our heart

My aunt Sofia Rubina spent several months on the third floor before she passed away last night. I want to thank all the people who took care of her. I want to say special thank you to the nurse Veronica English who has a big, loving heart, feels for the patients and their relatives, really devoted to her job.
There some bad reviews, I guess people write when they are angry, but they don't write to appreciate.
I had to compare with Shore View nursing home who was just horrible and my aunt ended up in the hospital because of their neglect and doctors were fighting for her life. After the hospital we placed her to Haym Solomon and could see the difference in care.
I really appreciate everyone who took care of my aunt. She was a doctor herself and was helping people all her life.

When I toured the facility, it seemed extremely clean and the residents seemed well cared for. The intake people are great salespeople and know how to sell the facility. Now that my elderly father with alzheimers is a resident, I can see what a big mistake we made choosing Haym Salomon. They don't provide the patient's bill of rights. They don't communicate with the family members, and worst of all, the level of care and concern by the staff is zero. My father was admitted in good physical condition with the ability to feed himself. Within one week of being there, he was suffering from severe dehydration, and was incoherent. He lost the ability to chew and swallow food. They hadn't given him a shower, and they wouldn't have had we not intervened. They said they couldn't get him in the shower chair because he wouldn't stand up from the wheelchair. Are they kidding? That's why we put him in a facility, because there were aides who could assist with transfers and manage his personal care safely. They weren't assisting him with feeding. So some days he would eat and some days he would sit there and play with his food. My family members have been at the facility every day pointing out what's not being done. Even worse, they don't change diapers throughout the day, so my father is forced to sit there in a wet diaper. Because he is uncommunicative, he can't advocate for himself. I feel terribly for the residents who don't have family to carefully oversee their care. The search for a better facility continues. I hope we can find a better place so I can stop worrying every minute what they're doing to my father and get some rest.
