I’ve heard that you have to get here early or they may have run out of pork and will close up early for the day. Is that true?

This place is a staple! It's one of the original steak sandwhich shops. We lived in Philly for a year and tried all the top spots! This place did not disapoint. It's an order window and you sit pn a dingy patio. But the sandwiches are on point and the price is fair.
I would recommend you trying this spot asap!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 15, 2024
First time trying John's despite basically having been to Philly hundreds of time. These folks know what they're doing not just from a steak standpoint but from an overall operations standpoint bc it runs likes a well oiled machine and the folks are friendly (despite the reputation some Philly jawns have).
Menu is simple and I went w the steak with both American and sharp provolone cheeses and fried onion (ketchup and mayo on the side). Sandwich is a nice size and stuffed with steak, cheese and a perfect balance of onion and the bread is chef's kiss! I could only eat 1/2 of a 1/2 of the entire sandwich so needless to say I have leftovers (which I am excited about).
Glad I finally tried John's and next time I'll try the roast pork.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Nov 20, 2024Updated review
There was a long line on Saturday around noon, but it moved fast. You're either a local who knows they don't do Cooper sharp, or you're a tourist and you stand there for 10 minutes trying to decide whether to choose sharp or regular provolone.
I've been on a cheesesteak roll recently, and this stand-by gets a lot of OG awards. I'd say it was pretty good, but I've had more flavorful, juicier and meatier.
Still worth a visit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Apr 8, 2011Previous reviewOkay, it's been more than a year since I've been here and I'm going to downgrade my rating by a star.
We ordered a cheesesteak and a roast pork sandwich, then split the two so we could have a little bit of both.
Yay - the two sandwiches and a bag of Herr's sour cream and onion chips came to under $15.
Boo - both tasted surprisingly underseasoned this time around. I mean really, really bland. Normally the sandwiches here are so good that you don't have to season anything with ketchup or salt, but this trip had me scrunching my face and going, "Why are these both so bland and boring?"
Hope it was just an off day for them.Jan 26, 2010Previous reviewTucked away in an almost forgotten industrial corner of town (until Ikea came to Philly, that is), this little landmark is a city gem, a place that you gotta make the extra effort to find. Yes, lines are long, tempers are short, and seating is near impossible, but one bite into any of their offerings and you will stop for a second and think, "AAAAAH, this was SO worth it."
Everytime I come here, I waver hungrily between the roast pork sandwich or a cheesesteak. Sometimes the decision is too hard for my addled brain, so we get both. Either way, the juicy sandwiches are hearty, filled with flavor, and unforgettable. - Nov 9, 20241 check-in
Legit Roast Pork. Order at take out window for take away or outdoor indoor patio seating.
Was missing my broccoli Rabe on the roast pork, but they sub spinach. The pork was seasoned so nicely, I was dying! My friend got the cheesesteak and it was sub par, go with the roast pork with sharp provolone and spinach!Helpful 6Thanks 3Love this 8Oh no 0 - Nov 8, 20241 check-in
John's Roast Pork is top two cheesesteak, it's really neck and neck for the top spot. The owner John is a humble and hardworking guy. The food here is amazing. The quality of steak, the cheese, and the Carangi bread they use is phenomenal. All the ingredients with the onions and American cheese was blended perfectly in the cheesesteak. I came early and was the first in line, so my cheesesteak came out fairly fast. There is enough seating for at least 20 people outside.
Top notch establishment that's been around for close to a hundred years and I hope it's around hundred more.Helpful 4Thanks 2Love this 4Oh no 0 - Nov 17, 2024
Totally worth the weekend lunchtime 20
minute wait at this iconic Philly institution. Line was out the door. Good mix of locals and tourists. Don't ask for Cooper sharp or broccoli rabe. You'll have to go across the street to Acme for that. Didn't take pictures of
my cheese steak because I devoured half almost immediately. So juicy, melted cheese throughout. Did not skimp in the meat. Fries could have been a bit warmer but added back the point because CRINKLE CUT FRIES RULE.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dec 13, 2024
A good experience at John's Roast Pork. This place has a huge customer base which draws long especially on weekends. The cheesesteak production is high-volume, so the order fulfillment time isn't very long. The ordering process is very comfortable as the customer service is good. There is covered and uncovered seating outdoors, however, on high-volume days it is probably difficult to find seating. Want to know how good these steaks are compared to the competition? Give them a try?

I got the small roast pork with provolone and spinach added. Keep in mind that they charge extra for adding cheese and spinach. I came around 3:30pm on a Thursday and there was basically no line. There were always 1-2 people on the side waiting for their sandwich to be done but service was quick so there wasn't much of a wait. These sandwiches are made to order which means that you should expect a bit of a wait since their sandwiches shouldn't already be pre assembled. They don't have indoor seating but there are benches next to their shop where you can sit to eat your sandwich. The seating area could get a bit too sunny and hot so I recommend trying to find somewhere with some shade if you're coming on a hot day.
In terms of the sandwich itself, it came out hot and fresh but was disappointed that I couldn't visually see or taste the cheese. The sandwich was really wet, so wet that the buns were drenched and soggy. While some might enjoy a soft soggy sandwich, it was just not the type of sandwich that I would enjoy. The roast pork was nice and tender and didn't taste dry at all and the spinach made it less heavy tasting. But because they use a soft pillowy bread, the pork juices completely soaked through the bread. I think I would've enjoyed this sandwich more if they put less of the pork juices so that the bread wouldn't be soggy or if they used a harder bread so that the sandwich wouldn't have more integrity. I ate half of a small sandwich and it didn't leave me craving for more because it tasted so heavy.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Oct 27, 20241 check-in
For my 1000th REVIEW!!!!!
We came here as Angelo's was busy and the guy from bone appetite said this was the runner up for best Philly cheese steak in Philadelphia. I also read this was as good if not better than Angelo's for the Philly cheese steak and same for Tony and DeNicks.
So we walked up and waited in line. Thank god the line was only like 15 min as we had a flight to catch at 4 and it was 120 now.
We went to the lady and ordered the pork sandwich with spinach and the Philly cheese steak.
So we got our food and took it to the airport. When I finally unwrapped both subs, they were a little soft which is to be expected when it's Been an hour. However, the food was still hot.
I bit the pork sandwich. I'm sorry it was a little better than Tony and DeNicks but still ok. I don't see the big deal in a pork sandwich. Nothing wows me. The Philly cheese steak was good. I'd say not as good as Angelo's but close enough for a substitute. Both meats were soft not chewy.
If you want a substitute for Angelo's this would suffice.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 16, 2024
Stopped in for lunch last week on a little local staycation. Usually make a few trips down a year. I love John's roast beef sandwich. This bad boy comes out smoking hot and full of juices. The meat is always tender and the flavors are great. Add in some sharp provolone and you have a happy belly. This sandwhich is packed with meat. I do warn you bring extra napkins as your hands are going to get dirty as the sandwich does get messy from being so juicy.
