I have been in the area for several years but I had yet to try Mary Mac's Tea Room. I was part of a small party of 9 celebrating a very special occasion. We were seated immediately in a small room with the bar in it. There was a party of 8 at the other table and a baby grand shoved in the corner.
We wrote our order down on individual forms provided at our place setting. The bartender doubled as our waiter... he came with the room!
We had a good time and there were no complaints about the food. Our group ordered a sundry of entrees and sides and it was fun to see all the variety come out of the kitchen. We were given a basket of corn bread and a basket of yeast rolls- not worth the calorie consumption. My meal was good- fried chicken wings, steamed cabbage and Mac and cheese. The menu indicated that there would be 6 of them and I was a little concerned about the quantity of leftovers I would have. Spoiler alert, they were quite small and not even a crumb left of them. The cabbage was good and the Mac and cheese was stellar.
The service was a little gruff and unimpressive. We were a well behaved celebrating a health milestone and no one from the restaurant cared to check in or acknowledge the event. We had giant balloons calling attention to the table but that was ignored. The other table that was seated in the same room did offer congratulations to honored, though.
There's a large lot behind the restaurant with no cost parking. And, while it was a little steep to navigate, it was convenient and well let.
It have been once and unless I am entertaining guests with a desire to go there, I am good.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - R S.San Diego, CA0399Jan 28, 2025
First, the service is top rate at Mary Macs for carry-out. All of the employees who I came into contact with were amazing and I would give them five stars. But the food didn't live up to the standards of the employees service.
There were few things that we bought that tasted decent. The chicken was not cooked well. It was partially raw. We got carry out. So, we didn't return it. Nothing we ate is worth mentioning when it comes to decent taste except the bread pudding and the broccoli casserole.
Bread pudding 3.5
Broccoli Casserole 3.5
The mac n cheese, fried okra, and fried green tomatoes seemed like they were going for fast food type of taste. They were mostly bland or not flavored well. The peach cobbler only taste like sugar (way too sweet). We never got our free corn bread. I was asked to check if everything was present in the bag and I overlooked the missing corn bread.
The employees are the only reason that I'm giving a rating of 2 stars. Otherwise I would give one star based on the food.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rashaka B.Cedar Park, TXJan 3, 2025
This is an older place, but the history of this place makes it historic. The bathrooms could be cleaned more often. They should not stink like that in the middle of a shift.
I ordered smothered chicken with rice and gravy with fried green tomatoes and collard greens. The chicken was a little dry. I needed more gravy with the rice. The fried green tomatoes and the sauce were superb. The collard greens were good as well. I added a little pepper sauce. The corn bread was good and nice.
I recommend this place. The prices are very reasonable. The staff is very friendly and personable. I will return. I visited on NYE 2024.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 4, 20241 check-in
Overall, very underwhelming experience for such an iconic establishment.
We ordered:
Legendary Fried Chicken w/ Sweet Potato Souffle & Southern style Grits
Georgia Peach Cobbler ala mode & Homemade Cinnamon Roll
Southern Salad w/ Shrimp
Fried chicken was dry, unseasoned, and the fried batter was terrible.
Mac n cheese noodles were way overcooked.
Salad was solid and fries and grits were okay. Sweet potato Souffle was a sugar bomb. Peach cobbler was alright. Cinnamon rolls were delightfully soft but bland, hardly tasted cinnamon.
We kept waiting for our fried chicken livers but the waiter neglected to tell us they ran out. We also waited a while for him to tell us they were out of the salmon we wanted to add to the salad. Waiter also forgot to input our dessert even though it was written on the order form. That means it wasn't on the bill which I was happy to not mention because of the subpar food and service.
The only reason this isn't one stars is because the employees were so friendly. Restaurant is very spacious with many tables.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 28, 2024
came here with my family for the first time. We're from Seattle and were looking for some good Southern eats. With all the hype and tons of reviews we had to try this place out.
There's a parking lot at the back of the restaurant so parking was fine for us. We were concerned about getting seated quickly and called the restaurant but no one answered the day before Thanksgiving. We thought it would be packed but to our surprise we were seated right away for a table of 4!
The menu clearly says you can't share entrees. Our waiter was nice enough to let us share if we ordered appetizers. We got the fried green tomatos, house salad, shrimp and Grits and of course fried chicken. We had plenty of food with the sides we ordered: beans, collard greens, mashed potato, fries. Our bill was $70 and some change including the tip which is pretty good for 4 ppl! The fried chicken wasn't overly greasy and pretty juicy. I wouldn't say it's the best fried chicken I ever had but it was decent! We regret not trying the peach cobbler but we were in a hurry.
Would come back again to try the cobbler and chicken dumplings!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Jennifer S.Phoenix, AZ51311394468Jan 18, 2025
Iconic Atlanta establishment. Come over for some great Southern favorites. The fried shrimp was the best IMO but the chicken fried steak was tasty. I loved the fried green tomatoes and fried okra as sides.

First time here, famous place with a lot of history! Food overall is pretty good.
We ordered the chicken fried chicken with an assortment of sides (fried okra, whipped potatoes, Mac n cheese, green beans) and got the hush puppies as an appetizer. It seems like all food comes with a bread basket of yeast rolls and cornbread, which are DELICIOUS!! It was probably the best thing here, the bread was SO GOOD!
The yeast rolls are the softest I have ever had and pretty rich in flavor, and the cornbread is nice and sweet and slightly moist. The bread here was so so good!
The chicken fried chicken itself was crunchy and flavorful, also pretty good but not particularly amazing. The sides were pretty standard, good again but not amazing. I heard from my friends the fried okra was really good however!
The hush puppies came out hot and crunchy, being soft on the inside and came with a dip.
The interior is like an older vintage style, with the history of the restaurant and photos all inside. Definitely some place to try at least once. Service was awesome! Everyone was friendly and prompt!Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 2684671889Dec 21, 20241 check-in
Service was excellent, so sweet and there was no wait on a Saturday yet it was busy. Loved the convenient parking lot. Yeast rolls were delicious. Everyone enjoyed their food and can see why this place is so popular. Is it the best fried chicken and sides? Maybe not, but the price was fair and it was some good southern food--perfect for a quick lunch and happy to have tried it after hearing about it for so many years.

Celebrities galore including former presidents, athletes and singers. This includes Justin Bieber. Fried Chicken was outstanding. Perfectly crispy and crunchy on the outside. Tender juicy and moist on the inside. Would go strictly for the chicken.

If you like soul good, you should definitely try this restaurant. The food was amazing and the restaurant looks very 90s homey. My friend and I enjoyed our time there, and our server was very welcoming.
