Coney Island has an okay MTA station on Stillwell Avenue. It gets busy. Particularly during summer. Best thing is the convenience. The station is only a few blocks away from the beach and is surrounded by restaurants.
Clean considering how busy it gets. It serves the D, F, N, Q, and R Trains. This is the station that serves Luna Park, and upon exiting you can smell the dead fish in the water. It used to be much nastier. The MTA cleaned it up. It's now brighter. This is no longer the scary place it was. In the station are multiple fast food restaurants. There's a Dunkin, a Subway inside a subway, and more that may be closed depending on the time of year.
It feels safe because of all the police around. It's right near a precinct so it means people don't start trouble here. The MTA made a big improvement.Helpful 19Thanks 0Love this 19Oh no 0 - 25016962920Nov 1, 2015
I remember when this station was completely decrepit. That you really didn't want to be around it. It looked like garbage. Only in the last decade or so after they did a complete overhaul on the station has it now looked much better, more attractive, and appealing to want to take the train into this station.
This station houses 4 subway lines; the Brighton Line (Q), the Culver Line (F), West End Line (D), and the Sea Beach Line (N), and is home to a few bus lines. For the subway, it takes roughly 45 mins to 1 hour for each of the trains to get into the city. Not quite sure on the buses.
The new station is also quite easy to navigate now. The old one was almost like a maze to figure out where to go. This one is easy, user friendly, and is more fluid. Thank goodness for that.
It's also convenient in that once you get off, Nathan's, and the boardwalk are right there, so there's something easily around it. The smell of the ocean off Surf Avenue once out on the street is one of the best smells and welcoming feelings that you can't really identify elsewhere, it's just that unique.
And so is this "new" station.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 18, 2017
Left from Penn station on the F train to Stilwell Coney Island stop. The car we were on was almost empty for our entire ride so a lot of space for the 45 minute give or take. The best part of leaving the station was Nathan's Original was right there. The right back was a little more crowded but not awful. The was both underground and above to see the sights of Brooklyn. When I'm in the city I use the subway as my main transportation. I'm a little weird but I enjoy it.

The last stop on the Q line, this station is easy enough to navigate with clear signage pointing to the beaches and the boardwalk. The usual MTA ticket machines for recharging your Metrocard and whatnot. Easy ramps for those who don't do well with steps. And there are assorted vendors for food, drink and souvenirs in the station concourse.
My only complaint is that for the return, it wasn't easy to figure out which was the right train to get me back to Manhattan and I ended up on a slower B train.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 17, 2015
I believe this is one of the nicer subway train stations in New York City, it is clean, well lit and the departure times of all trains are listed in full view for passengers to see.
Several trains leave from this location including the Q, N, F, and D trains and the platform gives you a wonderful view of the world famous Coney Island Amusement Amusement Park including the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone.
It's busy here.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 6, 2014
First time back in Coney Island and this newer station is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I remember the old station being grimy and run down.
This version is bright, airy, and spacious. Easy to find your subway line as the tracks are easily located and there are countdown timers to let you know when your train is arriving. Even some nice stained glass art windows along the length of the station, and a bunch of stores here - Dunkin Donuts, Coney Island souvenirs, Bank of America ATM lobby, and a few others. Definitely an upgrade and it looks and feels safer and cleaner.
From some of the reviews here I am glad I skipped using the public bathroom.
I still miss Philip's Candy Shop though as it disappeared with the old station. The best egg creams at only .75 cents a cup.
Take the D, F, N, Q lines here for a quick walk across the street to the Boardwalk, Nathan's, and MCU Park.
Plenty of cops patrolling the area too as the precinct is located pretty much right across the donut shop! How's that for a stereotype?Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Fallopia T.Manhattan, NY4927501275Aug 3, 2011First to Review
Stillwell Avenue subway station, a.k.a. Coney Island is dear to my heart and naturally I'm not sure I like the renovation job done on it, being that I liked the old filthy, grubby station JUST FINE.
The new geodesic-dome structure over the platform is impressive, and THERE IS NO BATHROOM, G*DDAMNIT. I mean, most people would rather hold it than use the crappy restroom that was there before, but there was a public restroom, whereas none of the fast-food stalls are required to have public restrooms and when you gotta go, you gotta go. It saved my @$$ more than once; the ride from the Lower East Side to here is usually more than an hour, even if you take the Q express.
And Philip's Candy Shop is long-gone. A 1996 New York Times article called it "The Sugar Fix at the End of the Line" http://www.nytimes.com/1996/01/07/nyregion/new-yorkers-co-the-sugar-fix-at-the-end-of-the-line.html?scp=1&sq=The%20Sugar%20Fix%20at%20the%20End%20of%20the%20Line&st=cse and it was dismantled a few years later.
I miss the vintage Coppertone ad gracing the front of the station, right near the "BMT Lines" sign--the one with the little blond girl and her dog is tugging on the bottom of her bathing suit and partially exposing her butt. "Tan, don't burn with Coppertone," it said.
In the current station it's not possible to see the layers of history the way you could before, and I miss that; it might be "safer," "cleaner," and " nicer," and my mother would like it better, but the current station sure isn't the same as the one featured in The Warriors (the best movie ever made, IMHO.)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Gary L.Woodside, NY110413196416Nov 18, 2012
F Train back to Queens is murder. Pretty big train station. Haven't been in here in ages. It looks a lot different from what it looked 15 years ago. There's plenty of security around this station. They are armed cops inside and out and for a station in Coney Island, I think it's fairly clean. I just really hate the train ride back to Queens. It's takes at least an hour and half...
I'm giving it 3 stars because its a big station. There's always a train ready to go on the platforms. Waiting time here is short and the station is very close to the boardwalk, Nathan's, and MCU park.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Sheon B.Greenlawn, NY22832864Jul 24, 2012
The station has countdown timers to let you know what time the next train is leaving. It was recently remodeled a few years ago. The station has ramps and elevators making it easy for disabled persons to enter/leave the station.
There is a Subway (sandwich), souvenir shop, and turkish market in the station.
DO NOT expect to find a clean bathroom in this station. It is disgusting.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Alex Z.Brooklyn, NY3389927Dec 1, 2012
Fastest way to get into Manhattan from here will be taking the Q then transferring to the B on Brighton Beach. If you are lucky and is able to get the B as soon as you get off the Q, it will take you 35 minutes from Brighton Beach to Grand street. Not too shabby.
Only complaint really about this station is the bathroom. It is disgusting!!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
