Truly a 0 star uni.. This university had the lowest quality education I've ever come across (nursing/paramed) and having been to 2 different universities for a bachelor and a masters, I know what good education looks like, and this is 100% not it! ..
Extremely rude teachers who don't give the slightest shit.. During covid, they'd smash in over 1,300 students in a class that's supposed to be no more than 300.. The teachers were tapped out, didn't care and provided incredibly low quality education, especially for what they charge.
Don't study here!! Trust me.. You'll save yourself tens of thousands in poor quality education and shitty experiences..
A 0 star university..Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Benjamin W.Australia13269444Dec 13, 2011First to Review
This is the university I attend. In academic circles its known as the university for the real world. QUT stands for Queensland University of Technology, this campus in particular is in Kelvin Grove.
Built on top of what is known as education hill, QUT Kelvin Grove is home to the study areas of Creative Industry, Education, and Health. The campus is ultra modern in look and has a couple of awards under its belt. It has plenty of facilities some include, a bar, library, pools, parking, 24 hour Internet lounges, a theatre, multimedia video and music recording facilities.
The campus has been designed around the principles of the urban village. From the top of the hill to the bottom students, business professionals, innovative institutes, cafés, parks and restaurants coexist side by side. There is range of quality eateries and shops, business is completely dictated by the university semester though.
As an education facility, the lecturers and spaces for learning are of the highest standard and students who attend QUT are well looked after. There is also affordable student accommodation for those who need it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Steven L.Brisbane, Australia60376301Feb 21, 2013
While I have some issues with QUT as a whole, I guess this is a campus review.
I study Creative Industries, and most of the lecturers and tutors I've had have been great. There's been the odd bad egg, but I think you'll get that everywhere. And to QUT's credit, the worst of them don't last long.
When they say university for the real world, it's generally because the lecturers and tutors have been out in the real world, not just straight into the academic world straight out of uni. My lecturer for my film class was head of comedy over at ABC a while back, and I think all of my art lecturers and tutors are active outside of the university. I've also found them to be super approachable and helpful.
There are a lot of computer rooms to use, but many of the computers are in serious need of an update. The Dell computers around the place take about ten minutes to boot up into Windows. This is especially annoying if you just want to get into your email or print something off. If you can, grab one of the macs that are around the place. You'll be logged in, printed, stapled, logged out and on your way to assignment minder before the Dell has finished booting up.
Actually, if you can, bring a laptop. There's wifi and power points all over the place, and you can set it up to print on the uni printers. Well worth it.
If you have any sort of disability, you do not want to be here. The hill between the main campus and the cultural precinct is murder. Not to mention all the stairs, but at least there's a lift for most of those. You'll come away from a degree here with buns of steel.
Food is a problem. Most times I go into the cafeteria I walk out again wondering why I wasted my time. Mind you, their bacon and egg muffins in the morning aren't bad; assuming you can find a staff member to actually serve you.
Head down to the cultural precinct. The vietnamese bakery is a bargain, there's a Pizza Capers and Nandos, but my favourite is the fish and chip shop, Carraway Pier. Great chips, a good student fish and chip deal, and surprisingly good burgers.
There's also a student bar, but I've never seen it busy, and honestly, have never been in. Back in the day when I first went off to uni, the uni bar was a happening place, always busy. I guess if you've driven to uni you're not going to drive, and really, there's no reason to be there when you're not studying, so people go elsewhere for bars.
A final word of advice. Buy some moist toilet wipes if you're going to spend an extended period of time on campus. More compact than a toilet roll in your bag, it saves on the agony from the sandpaper QUT use.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Michelle L.Australia11270292Dec 14, 2011
I completed my Bachelor's degree at QUT, majoring in Creative Writing, and overall I'm glad I did. If you're studying something creative at university and want a course that will focus on the practical as well as theoretical side of things, QUT is a stronger contender than UQ.
The campus is great. Although the walk from the library to Z Block is bit of a feat and there are some aspects of it that try to imitate an older university (there's this bizarre, sandstone building outside B Block that I'm convinced is a giant wall prop), it's a big, breezy place that's made major improvements since I finished undergrad.
If you're into studying film, QUT just joined leagues with The New York Film Academy. And if you're a bookworm, or looking for a quiet place to study, they've just renovated their library and it looks beautiful.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sun E.Brisbane, Australia19447160Dec 13, 2011
I've actually studied at QUT twice over the years. The courses are world class and I've only been able to study there due to their flexibility with night classes and intensives.
Tutorial classes will always be too large with all the funding cuts, but tutors and lecturers are generally well chosen, and usually still working in their field.
The ads might be a little annoying, but I guess they do have something to crow about...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Meegan W.Australia25229251Jan 14, 2012
I've been studying on and off at QUT for several years, and have always enjoyed the campus, the staff, and the general atmosphere of the place. It's annoyingly advertised as the 'university for the real world' (cawfeeee!), but it's even more annoying to have to admit it really is. Courses are practical as well as theoretical, which I feel gives QUT an edge over bigger institutions like UQ. The creative courses on offer are excellent and the teaching staff really are involved and working in the fields they teach, which I know gives hope to me and my fellow Fine Arts students. The Urban Village has really expanded around QUT in the last few years, and there is a real community feel emerging at the campus. Having lots of shops and cafes around also helps the between class boredom and if you want to catch up on some reading, the library has been beautifully refurbished.
