Maastricht is known for housing the only "mountain" in netherlands. Mountain is a bit of exaggeration given it is less than 200 meters high.
In the mountains there are man-made caves. From centree maastricht the northern caves are approx 25 minute walk. I bought to tickets beforehand at the tourist office website.
With a group of 25 we gathered near the chalet and went underground for approximately an hour. There was a Dutch and English tour.
The guide was - especially for kids- very entertaining. We learned a lot about the caves but also history of the area.
Tip
- buy ticket online beforehand. They can sell out quickly

The tour by Ruud was excellent. Fascinating.
We bought the combo with the bus city tour (make sure they play the English tape), river trip, and tunnel tour. They are not caves, so don't be surprisedHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ann D.Amsterdam, The Netherlands169196787Jun 21, 2015First to Review
From Maastricht, we got the combination deal of the boat cruise and guided cave tour. The boat took about 20 mins and is every hour as is the tour. There are 30km of grotten here and the guide we had was great at stopping and pointing out artwork and interesting features of the cave. There is script on the wall as old as 1500s and drawings from whaling boats by people who took refuge to religious artwork. Napoleons troops were here as were the Dutch during World War Two. There is explanation of how the tunnels were built, information on people buried there and how people lived there in war time. The tour is only offered in Dutch but most of it you can work out as its looking at things and the guide we had seemed happy enough to explain a few things in English when asked.
