Beautiful and historic church. However, the clergy are cold and unfriendly (except for the Monsignor with an Italian name).
The images of various American saints are impressive.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ray M.Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NY14013May 11, 2023
Whenever I'm in DC I try to attend 12:10 mass here . It's a beautiful old church and the priest is a very nice guy and a good homilist. It's a nice peaceful way to break up a day in the Capitol

Went to this church on Sunday Mass whole visiting Washington DC. Walking distance while visiting the White House and surrounding area. Yes, it is a Catholic Church.

Instead of missing Sunday Mass while on the road, I managed to find this gem via the trusty Yelp app. There is probably a St. Patrick's in every city, but from what I understand this is one of the oldest and prestigious churches in DC. Considering the church was erected shortly after the US became a country, I'd be hard pressed to say this wasn't in amazing condition.
The older the church, the worse the ventilation. Summer time can be brutal here, even if the fans are running the crowds definitely keep the temps up. Evenings are another story in church land, barely anyone is around to disrupt the tranquil vibe. The interior is well kept, clean, and the pews aren't too hard on the knees. Whew.
If you find yourself here early on a Sunday, enjoy the impressive choir and cheeky priests. Parking is limited in the area, but then again, it's DC. Park a block around the corner and make the walk to the front steps.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 1 - Jon Z.Richmond, TX0292Jul 21, 2019
Beautiful church and a wonderful motto. "Parishioners are expected, visitors are welcome." We went to the 8am mass. We were on vacation and wore shorts. It was not an issue. The mass went fast since there was no song. The priest was a perfect fit with the Irish accent. Mass was over around 8:35. The sermon was strong, contemporary, and relevant to the Gospel reading. The church really echoes so the priest was a little difficult to hear, but as long as the congregation stayed quiet everything was easily understood.

A magnificently beautiful church that is welcoming and improves your life. It is filled with good people, who geniunely care for those that need them.

It's a nice church (as are most), but I do wish there was more use of natural lighting. I'm not sure if it's because I came to the Saturday afternoon mass... but it felt a bit more confined and stuffy.
Something cool? Look up at the second floor to see the pianist.
Located near Gallery Pl-Chinatown metro so it's convenient. If you're going to be looking at museums or hanging around the National Mall and need a spot nearby for mass, then this place is for you.

Great Catholic community in Washington DC. The church is historic. The parish was founded to meet the needs of stonemasons building the White House and the US Capitol. Saint Patrick in the City was updated about four years ago and looks magnificent. In particular, i think the statues that surround the congregation are quite something. I am particularly found of the St. Thomas Moore statue, patron saint of lawyers. I think the light hits him perfectly.
As some have noted, when getting ashes on Ash Wednesday, the line is a bit free form; just go with it. Packed to the ceiling on Ash Wednesday 2019, which was good to see.
For folks just interested in tourism, this is a beautiful church to take in. Founded in 1794 (thanks Joanna M) -- the church was just renovated and is in spotless condition -- which is amazing for an inner city church. Stained glass windows are unusal in modern Catholic churches -- this is an old school, old world beautiful church. Pope Francis spoke here during his 2015 visit. Just came back from 10am Sunday mass -- a great idea for visitors or suburbanites.
For tourists, of course, the church is free, and is within a block of Ford's Theatre and that wax museum joint. Pret a Manger nearby. There is a very nice daily mass at 12:10pm -- which is well attended. Just came back from Sunday 10am advent mass. Plenty of available seats but great vibe and nice job by choir -- beautiful singing but attendees are not overwhelmed. - Ryan E.Alexandria, VA17911122Jul 9, 2010First to Review
This was probably a nice looking church before it suffered one of the last "wreckovations" in the 1990s.
The liturgy is center-left. Picture bad hymns, Penitential Rite form anything-but-A and anything but the Roman Canon.
Not awful, but not great.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joanna M.Arlington, VA792730219Mar 6, 2014
Founded in 1794, you can't really hate on DC's oldest parish that was established for the stonemasons that were building the White House and Capitol at the time.
They are open all week and have masses on both saturday and sunday mornings.
Mass conducted slightly different than other Catholic churches I've gone to and the "getting on line system to receive communion/ashes" was a cluster. No rhyme or reason just go with the flow.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
