Trinity Church stands on a hilltop at the junction of Broadway and Wall Street. Today its spire is dwarfed by skyscrapers, but in the early 1800s, the church's 200-foot spire dominated the landscape.
Trinity Church dates all the way back to 1697 when King William III granted a charter to the church. The charter serves as the incorporation document for the church and states that the church must pay "one peppercorn" a year to the crown
Three churches have stood on the spot. This structure is actually the third Trinity Church to exist. The first church burned down in the Great New York City Fire of 1776, the second was demolished in 1839 after snowfall caused structural problems, and this current structure was consecrated in 1846.
Some interesting facts which I find during my visit & research:
1) Trinity Church was once the tallest building in New York City. when it was completed in 1846, Trinity Church held the title of tallest building in the United States for 23 years, until it was surpassed in 1869. However, it remained the tallest building in New York City all the way up until 1890,
2) When Trinity was granted its charter from King William III in 1697, the rent set by the English crown was "one peppercorne" per year. On July 9th, 1976, when Queen Elizabeth II visited the church, she was presented with 279 peppercorns as "back rent."Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - 8489623344Aug 30, 2024
Historic and beautiful landmark Episcopalian Church in the heart of the Financial District dating back to 1697. Apparently it is the 3rd version/rebuild of the church due to fires in the past.
There's a cemetery on the grounds which serves as Alexander Hamilton's resting place among other notable historical figures.
The church is opulent and the cemetery outlines gorgeous stone architecture. Stained glass window adorn the church which remains active with services every Sunday.
If in the area, Trinity Church is a must visit.Helpful 22Thanks 6Love this 21Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2024
It is hard not to miss the 281-foot steeple of this beautiful church. Trinity Church is located in the heart of the financial district and faces Wall Street. I love old churches and this one is one of my favorites. Trinity Church was built in the mid 1800's and was once the tallest structure in New York City. Today it is dwarfed by many skyscrapers.
Trinity Church Wall Street is still an active Episcopal parish and holds worship services each week and does community outreach. Both the Trinity Church and the Churchyard are open to the public daily during daylight hours. There is no charge to enter, but they do accept donations. You can walk on a pathway through the burial grounds in the courtyard. Despite being in a busy part of New York City, the grounds are very peaceful and tranquil. Alexander Hamilton, Albert Gallatin, and Robert Fulton are some notable people that are buried here.
This is actually the third Trinity Church that was built in 1846. The first two were damaged by fire and weather. I love its Gothic Revival design. It is one of my favorite churches to photograph. The church has 23 bells that you can hear ringing from time to time. The doors are made of bronze and very impressive to see in person. I spent a little time checking out the interior of the church. The stained-glass windows are so beautiful. Just remember to be respectful to those that are worshipping here if you decide to go inside.Helpful 17Thanks 4Love this 13Oh no 0 - Jul 3, 2024
This is a famous church of more than 1,600 members and over more than 325 years on Wall Street. The 4 and 5 trains can get you here if you get off on Wall Street. You have to go through security and metal detectors before you can step foot into the church. There is also a virtual tour that the church has for anyone who wants to explore and learn the church. Pictures and recording are allowed in the church. They have many services such as a food, arts, and music program. There are many events held in this church and have a website dedicated to this church. This church is next to my high school and was the venue for my graduation. Can't believe I graduated in a church!

This historic church stands at the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway. A church on this site dates back to the 1600s with a charter from King William III on May 6, 1697. The current structure is the third here and construction completed in 1846. At the time, the spire was the tallest structure in the area and was the tallest building in the United States until 1869.
The building is designed as Gothic Revival architecture and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
Unfortunately, I was only able to view the outside today as there was some state thing going on with lots of security and men with ear pieces and bulges under their coats. Bummer!

In lower Manhattan right near Wall Street this church is a fine example of old stone work. It was built in the mid 1800s and looks like it has to be 300 feet tall. It is quite a magnificent structure and worthy of a visit even if you walk through inside and out in an hour. There is also a yard with a burial ground on the premises.

Trinity church is located on Wall street and is one of the oldest church in NYC. Outside of the church is a cemetery. Inside of the church is beautiful, I like the color and the interior design of the ceiling. The pointy part of the outside looks very gothics architecture like. Please note that this is an operating church and you must check the hours before going in.
There are actually three Trinity Churches. The original one was built in 1697.
I highly recommend coming here for a visit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Anton K.Morris County, NJ257104548Dec 27, 2021
Located in the Historic Wall Street District, Trinity Church lies at the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of New York.
The original church was built in 1697 followed by the second Trinity Church in 1705. That church had among it's parishioners, George Washington, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton. It was destroyed in 1776 in the Great Fire. The present church was built in the Gothic Rivival style between between 1839-1846 under the direction of architect Richard Upton. It's spire and cross is 281' above ground level. Up until 1869 it was the tallest structure in the United states. The church has a capacity of 652 parishioners.
There are three entrance doors to the church, east, south and north. The east and north doors have six panels depiciting church history and the Bible. The south door depicits the history of New York. The doors date from 1893 and their construction was financed by William Waldorf Aster. The church has an adjacent cemetry where such notables as Alexander Hamilton, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, Robert Fulton and Lord Sterling are buried.
Within walking distance, you can visit Federal Hall where George Washington was inaugrated in 1789 and the Raging Bull & Fearless Girl statuary among other landmarks in this lower Manhattan area.Helpful 21Thanks 1Love this 21Oh no 0
