Will try my best to rank with a number when possible. And as always, will mention the specific things to get at each spot.

#1. This new(ish)-comer is simply the best. Hallie and the team make it always feel homemade. The flavors are executed above and beyond. Their pints are loaded with goodness and they never skimp. They also do awesome collabs with local places. -
#6b. This location is wayyy better than Chinatown Ice Cream Factory's original Chinatown location. The flavors here are more exciting, it's more spacious, there are less crowds, there's air conditioning, and I got way bigger scoops than I'm used to getting at the Chinatown location. Still cash only though. The banana pudding flavor is one of the best banana flavors you can get in ice cream shops right now. The Ube is great too, and one of the few strong Ube ice creams in the city.Anu’s 5-star review: This location is way better than the original Chinatown location. It's spacious, less crowded, has air conditioning, and from what I can tell, has better flavors. I also got bigger scoops than the tiny ones I've received at the original location. The Banana Pudding and Ube are excellent flavors. They also have Konery cones, which I'm a huge fan of. -
Soft Serve #8. Big Gay makes some pretty inventive soft serve creations and flavor ideas. It's certainly a bit overrated/overpriced, but sometimes the specials and soft serve flavors in the rotation are greatAnu’s 4-star review: At first I was rather unamused by their pricey soft serve creations. But over the years Big Gay has made some outstanding and creative soft serve specials that have exceeded my expectations. The classics like Salty Pimp, Dorothy, and American Globs are amazing, but definitely look out for specials like Fluffernutter and Cheetos, as well as new soft serve flavors on tap. Also very important: they've stepped up their pint game tremendously. The quality and flavors of the new pints are a step above the old ones. You can find them in store or at select retail locations. -
Soft Serve #3a. Delicious tahini soft serve. They top with halva crumbles AND stuff them in the cone. they also have Konery cones.Anu’s 5-star review: Seed and Mill is *the" reason to go to Chelsea Market. There are many good places for ice cream in NY, but none of them can replace the unique flavors at Seed and Mill like Goat's Milk and Tahini. I highly recommend getting the halva topping. They put Halva on top AND stuff it inside your cone. The soft serve halva combination is pure bliss. Creamy, fresh soft serve with crumbly, dense halva. It just works. They also offer the Konery cones, the best cones ever. This is one of the few soft serve places in NY that I can never get tired of. -
#7a. Might be vegan, but the soft serve here is strong. The peanut butter soft serve with strawberry syrup is extremely satisfying.Anu’s 5-star review: ~ review is for ice cream ~ The peanut butter soft serve is one of the strongest peanut butter ice cream bases I've come across. And it's vegan. I was skeptical initially but now I'll be back for their rotation of flavors. -
#3b. Amazing specials here. The flavors are so creative and the ice cream is top notch quality. It's nice to see a small business put so much care into the ice cream quality and be adventurous with their flavor ideas. Their monthly specials are always incredible so be sure to keep up with their social media for flavor updates. -
#5. The ice cream here is full of deep, intricate flavors. The Indian inspired flavors (often spiced or aromatic) make it so much more interesting. The ice cream base itself is excellent too. I'm really in love with how unique and flavorful this ice cream is. Must try flavor is the rose, and when it's around close to summer time, the Fig on Fig.Anu’s 5-star review: Malai Ice Cream is some of the most flavorful ice cream you'll ever try. They elevate ice cream with deep Indian and Middle Eastern inspired flavors. Aromatics like rose and star anise, spices like cinnamon and cardamom, fruits such as mango and dates, and even dessert components like halwa and baklava. If it's your first time, definitely try the best-seller Rose with Cinnamon Roasted Almonds. After that, go out of your comfort zone and try the intricate spice-infused flavors. You won't regret it. I'm so glad they have a permanent shop now, because I'll definitely be here often. -
The most refreshing sorbet and great gelato. I love the frequent rotation of flavors. A scoop of their sorbet with a scoop of their gelato is the perfect pairing of freshness and richness. Good for when you don't want that much or just want something lighter.Anu’s 4-star review: ~ review is only for gelato/sorbet ~ Superiority Burger's frequently updating rotation of gelato and sorbet is fantastic. The sorbet is refreshing and delicious. It doesn't taste icy or diluted at all. It's smooth and completely saturated with fresh fruit flavor. I also noticed that the colors of their sorbet are always vibrant. I'm guessing because it's as concentrated as can be! The bright reddish purple Blackberry Coconut, for example, was packed with berry flavor and had a pleasant coconut aftertaste. The gelato is creamy and dense. Its texture is ideal and flavor is strong. I wasn't expecting much from the the Mint Gelato, but it was surprisingly amazing. The best thing to do is pair a scoop of gelato with a scoop of sorbet. It's the perfect combination of richness and freshness. They do a bunch of interesting flavors (e.g. focaccia, cone, various fruits, etc.). The only downside is that it's a bit pricey for a smallish portion. I will never get tired of visiting for every new gelato and sorbet they come out with. -
Soft Serve #3c. Fun soft serve with so many options of cereals and mix-ins. Better variety of cereal than at Milk & Cream.Anu’s 5-star review: I wanted to be a hater just because of my natural stigma towards hypebeast culture, sneakerheads, and overly Instagrammed desserts. But I have to admit that I enjoy every visit to KITH Treats. KITH Treats is essentially the same exact concept as Milk & Cream Cereal Bar. But to my surprise, I give KITH the edge. That's a big compliment considering how great I think Milk & Cream is. The reason I think it's slightly better is because the way they mix the ice cream base with cereal produces a denser, more flavor saturated soft serve. KITH offers a wider variety of cereal and mix-in options and it also seems like they give bigger portions than Milk & Cream. One of my favorite ice cream swirl creations so far is vanilla ice cream base + Cap'n Crunch Berries + Marshmallow Charms. They also have a specials list, which are the combos made by celebrities who have visited. But there are so many possibilities! You can visit repeatedly and never get bored of trying different cereals and mix-ins for your soft serve. Another reason I love coming here is the vibe. The soundtrack is ON POINT. I don't know who does their soundtrack, but kudos because every time I'm here at least one of my favorite rap/hip hop tracks is on. The staff is also great. Everyone just seems happy to be there, vibing to music, and appreciating the sneaker culture. Maybe I don't get sneaker hype, but at least we can all appreciate cereal, candy, and ice cream. -
#7b. The Ube and Ovaltine flavors here are fantastic. I'd skip the hyped up waffle and just get a specialty cone. The scoops are big too. I really want to try the salted egg yolk flavor when it's back. My favorite flavors from here are the past seasonal ones though: Pumpking (pumpkin with brown sugar crumble) and Moon Goddess (salted vanilla with pandan mooncake bites). Update: Tokyo Banana is a great banana flavor with a sweet ripe banana taste.Anu’s 5-star review: ~ review is only for ice cream ~ I know I know, Instagram has made the bubble waffle tempting. I'm here to tell you to skip it. Its texture is incompatible with ice cream and it makes eating a pain. Instead, just opt for their fantastic ice cream in a specialty cone (e.g. chocolate sugar cone or my favorite salty pretzel cone) I love the unique flavors here. The Ube and Ovaltine flavors are delicious. I'm glad the ube flavor actually has tons of ube in it. The ice cream is super creamy. It's maybe a tad less solid texture than other ice cream places, but still great. I think this is a very underrated place for ice cream, but overrated for the over the top waffle dessert creations. -
#3c. Dense, high quality ice cream and fantastic flavors. My absolute favorite is Orchard Road (pandan+ube). Another fav is Pot of Gold. They really know how to enhance your basic flavors (cookies & cream, etc.) too; you'll notice when you taste them. Bonus for the from-scratch fresh waffle cones and the massive scoops they give you.Anu’s 5-star review: This area was in need of a good ice cream spot. I'm glad Kaylee's was the one to fill that gap because I'm thoroughly impressed with this new spot. The scoops here are dense and creamy. You can taste the quality in both the ice cream and the mix-ins. I'm a pandan and ube fanatic, so it wasn't a surprise that Orchard Road was my favorite flavor. I was skeptical at first because so many places try to do ube ice cream or desserts only to produce a very weak flavor. Orchard Road has a subtly leafy, bright Pandan base with loads of creamy ube chunks with a naturally strong ube flavor. I find it cool that the greenish and purple hue is completely natural, not from added colors. It also shows they stepped up their game with the quantity and quality of ingredients. I also enjoyed the Pot of Gold flavor, which is a cereal base with cereal marshmallow. Again, I was skeptical because everyone tries to do a cereal ice cream but it always ends up weak. But the base of this flavor has a clear milk and cereal taste. I was also surprised because usually cereal marshmallows do poorly in ice cream; they either get frozen hard or too mushy. But the cereal marshmallows in this ice cream taste fresh and soft. Another favorite is the Coffee Cake, which I'm glad has a very strong coffee flavor compared to most coffee ice creams. The cake pieces are so tasty and complement the strong coffee well. I also tried other tasty, interesting flavors like Lychee Rose and Let's Get Ready to Crumble (a blueberry muffin based flavor). In addition to the unique flavors, they also offer your classic favorites like vanilla, Salted Caramel, and Cookies & Cream. Although they're standard flavors, Kaylee's finds a way to elevate them with lots of high quality mix-ins and an ice cream base that tastes fresh and saturated with the intended flavor. Salted Caramel sounds standard, but theirs is insane! Oh yeah, they also make the most perfect waffle cones from scratch. They kindly made one for me fresh from the waffle iron. The warm, crisp waffle cone is a delicious complement to the cold ice cream. I'm happy to say this is a new regular ice cream spot for me. -
#1b & Soft Serve #4. Old school ice cream with super smooth texture that executes excellently on sweet & salty combinations. It's the best quality ice cream (up there with Morgenstern's). I'm constantly impressed by their strong flavors. Favorites are PB&J, Salted Caramel Toffee, Chocotorta, and Miso Cherry. // Soft serve: the texture is basically perfect. I didn't think a lemon soft serve could blow me a way, but the one they do here is like a lemon cream soft flavor, balanced perfectly between and freshness, acidity, and creaminess. Only downside is that the selection of soft serve flavors is limited to a couple (e.g. when I was there, only lemon and coffee). My favorite OF location is this Coffee & Cream one.Anu’s 5-star review: This is best OddFellows location yet. The space is comfortable, the lines are never too long, the service is great, and they serve coffee? Can't get any better than this. They offer some of their great regular ice cream flavors (among my favorites are ricotta plum thyme and saffron passionfruit) as well as their newer soft serve. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the lemon soft serve was. It's the perfect balance of fresh/citrusy and rich/creamy. The texture is on point too. Only downside is that the selection of soft serve flavors is limited to a couple (e.g. when I was there, only flavors of soft serve were lemon and coffee). I'll be back to try one of the coffee and cream creations, like affogoato and café liégeois. -
Soft Serve #5. Might be a hit or miss for many of you, but the pickle soft serve is weirdly amazing to me. It's creamy, tangy, and salty. Very addicting. You get a generous portion too (only $6 for a massive cup). It's not icy by any means, but hasn't quite reached the texture mastery of the experts in the competitive soft serve game. My new favorite flavor, the popcorn soft serve, was incredibly creamy (even creamier than the Pickle flavor in my experience). It's basically a buttery vanilla with a slight saltiness to it. If you want to taste the intricacies of this flavor, don't get the chocolate dip. They give you a TON of chocolate with the dip, and that's awesome. But for the sake of trying the interesting popcorn flavor, skip it first.Anu’s 5-star review: Update: My new favorite flavor of soft serve here is POPCORN . This flavor is even creamier than the Pickle flavor. It's basically a buttery, slightly salty vanilla. If you want to taste the intricacies of the flavor, the first time you try it maybe don't go for the chocolate dip like I did. Because of how generous they are with the chocolate dip (read: they flood it with chocolate), a lot of the interesting popcorn flavor was overpowered. Next time I'll try it without just to appreciate the flavor (note to LPD: feel free to continue loading us with chocolate though). This is some of the tastiest soft serve you can get for great value. For $5 ($6 with chocolate dip), you get a tall heaping cup of soft serve. And if you get chocolate dip, they douse it in plenty of chocolate, not just a drizzle. Also, the Dan Dan noodles are still their best noodles. Not authentic, but just a quick, reliable, and tasty bowl of noods. ---- PS: If you couldn't tell already, I pretty much only come for ice cream, good music, and cool atmosphere. My reviews are biased towards those things. -
Soft Serve #6. Solid but standard soft serve. The flavors are strong; the vanilla has an extra vanilla bean flavor, and the Earl Grey is pleasant without being overbearing. The best parts about the soft serve here are the amazing cones they come in (they never get soggy) and the housemade toppings (broken up Mah-Ze-Dahr bar or chocolate chip cookies!). The cone and toppings are what set Mah's soft serve apart.Anu’s 5-star review: Mah-Ze-Dahr has never ceased to amaze me since becoming a regular. // Bakery The first reason to visit is the bakery. Here are items you should look out for: - Doughnuts: IMO, a NYC doughnut essential. The brioche doughnut is by far the best brioche doughnut in the city, and probably in America. It's golden crisp on the outside, with fluffy dough in the inside, and filled with the most delightful vanilla bean custard filling. I could eat the filling by the spoonful. The other doughnut they do is a perfect old fashioned cake doughnut (bonus points: it's gold). - Candied Hazelnut Nutella Brioche Bread: this is essentially a sticky bun, but with the decadent addition of hazelnut and Nutella. - Cookies: All the varieties are all delicious. I will note that the Chocolate Explosion one is super popular, but I was a bit let down by it. It's light, crumbly, and chocolatey, but not rich enough to call an 'explosion'. - Brownies: not even going to bother describing them; they're perfect. - Cakes: I'm not much of a cake guy but they always have a couple cake offerings if you're into that. They look wonderful. - Other bakery fare: bars, tarts, croissants, etc. Make sure to arrive here before late morning to get your hands on the doughnuts and brioche bread. Especially if it's the weekend. // Soft Serve Ice Cream The other reason to come besides the pastries is the soft serve. The soft serve here is simple yet perfectly executed and excellent quality. The ice cream is standard, but what make Mah-Ze-Dahr stand out are the cones and toppings. The housemade cones never leak or get soggy. And the toppings are pieces of the very own bakery items, such as their amazing chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and Mah-Ze-Dahr bar (the latter is a *must have* topping). So far I've seen the following flavors in their rotation: vanilla, Earl Grey, mango, coconut, pistachio, butterscotch, and chocolate. They offer two flavors at any given time, and you have the option to swirl them. // Cafe & Space Not only is this one of my favorite bakeries, but also one of my go-to cafes. The coffee is great. The seating area is really comfortable; there are sofas in the front, stools in the middle, and a long table in the back. And there's WiFi and a clean bathroom. The staff is very friendly. MZD is a bit pricey, but totally worth it for the quality and taste. -
Soft Serve #7b. The dipped creations are what make this place satisfying as hell. The ice cream itself isn't outstanding by any means, but they have great creations like Berry Gibbs, Chocolate PB, and Cracker Jax.Anu’s 4-star review: This is a nice stop in Willy B for some fun soft serve and great views. I love the flavor rotation. The dip shell and simple soft serve is just a pleasing combo. The ice cream itself is average but the flavor dip creations in their entirety are awesome. My only wish is that they used sugar cones instead of the frail basic ones. -
Soft Serve #9a. I'm adding this here because the cereal milk soft serve is pretty good. It's best with the cornflake crunchies. They also do some good shakes and blizzard-like creations called "milkquakes". The milkquakes are delicious because they blend the soft serve with treats, but they lack toppings. I'm not putting a # ranking on this one because I think this place is overrated and overpriced. 9 times out of 10 I'd prefer to go to Supermoon for croissant butter soft serve.Anu’s 3-star review: I enjoy Milk Bar, but I wasn't impressed with this location's effort and service. It seemed like they half assed my milkshake, skimping on the ingredients, hardly even paying attention while they made it. I also observed how they nonchalantly made other people's desserts. So while Milk Bar's ice cream and baked goods are awesome, I need to dock points for the inattentiveness of the staff preparing the creations.

Good soft serves too: taro especially, but they offer mango and vanilla also. Cash only.Anu’s 4-star review: Chinatown Ice Cream Factory offers high quality scoops with your classic flavors as well as more interesting flavors that you'd find in typical Asian desserts. They do regular ice cream scoops mostly but also offer a couple rotating soft serve flavors (e.g. vanilla, mango, taro). The flavors you must get: - Pandan: hard to describe, but it's a bright, sweet, sort of floral taste, basically lavender's way cooler sibling (I hate lavender and floral tastes; don't worry this is nothing like that) - Dot Tot: egg custard- rich and custardy, like the filling of a pastry - Taro: creamy and earthy, slightly nutty too I find myself getting at least one of these three at each visit. Excited to try other cool flavors like Lychee and Pumpkin Pie. The scoop sizes are on the smaller side given the price, but at least the flavors are spot on. The place is cramped so try to make up your mind on the side before taking up space by the line and counter. I always feel rushed when I'm in here, especially when I'm trying flavors. Also, it's cash only. -
Soft Serve #1a. Ube soft serve is the best. Also great sesame butter and Macupuno (coconut) flavors. I've come to the conclusion that the Skor topping is a must.Anu’s 5-star review: The Ube soft serve might be the greatest soft serve in the city. I wish I could get this flavor at all ice cream places. Ube is one of those flavors that places don't execute well on. It's often too light and hardly noticeable, or too fake. But Soft Swerve absolutely nailed the flavor. It tastes like creamy, buttery, and slightly nutty Ube. I also have tried the Macupuno Coconut and Sesame Butter, which are also delicious, but I love Ube too much to get it swirled with another flavor. A combination that I think is superb is the Ube soft serve with Cap'n Crunch and Skor Toffee. It's a creamy base with a lightly sweet crunch and pop of crispy bits of chocolate toffee. Besides the amazing flavors, the soft serve itself is extremely high quality. It is dense and doesn't melt quickly like other soft serves that are too light. The flavor saturates the ice cream completely. That Ube is so good I might have to buy some pints of it next time... I'm also curious to try the specials on the menu. -
Soft Serve #9b. The frozen custard here is great "soft serve ice cream" and the rotation of flavors continues to please.Anu’s 3-star review: Caveat: I love Shack Shack. It's one of the few burger spots that I can comfortably enjoy multiple burgers, fries, plus a cold sweet treat (comfortable on my wallet and my stomach). As a whole it's probably a 4+ star institution for me. But the review is of course for this location specifically. Like most Shake Shack locations, the line and wait are long. Finding a seat here is extremely difficult. But unlike other Shake Shacks, the seating layout of this location is not smart. On the top floor, the only seating area is like a rectangular tunnel by the window. Customers crowd up by the opening of the "tunnel" and form a crowd, ready to pounce for when an open seat becomes available. It's really not pleasant to be in that situation or eat around a crowd of people waiting for you to finish your food. There's also a stairwell to the bottom floor seating area. Unfortunately, people camp out ON the stairs peeking for an open seat down there. They're in the way of others trying to get to the bathroom or actually go all the way down. I guess in the worst case scenario if you can't find a seat in, there are some benches across the street by the small park. Food-wise, it's your standard Shack Shack fare. One of my burgers could have been warmer, but that might be nitpicking. -
Soft Serve #1b. INCREDIBLE pistachio soft serve. The absolute best pistachio ice cream I've ever had, including non soft serve ice creams. Also tried the amazing black sesame (better than black sesame at the hyped up Asian ice cream places), strawberry basil, and salted caramel / millionaire shortbread soft serves. Who knew a bakery could do ice cream so well. The staff told me it might be because of the strict quality of ingredients.Anu’s 5-star review: Over the year Chanson has won me over and become one of my favorite bakeries. // Pastries If you're coming here for the first time, you need to get the Kouign-Amann. The Kouign-Amann is the best in New York by a landslide. The exterior is perfectly caramelized and crisp, and the inner layers are flaky, rich, and buttery. The garnish and filling vary depending on the flavor. The strawberry and clotted cream one, for example, is topped with fresh strawberries and dollops of clotted cream, and filled with a beautiful strawberry jam or compote. They offer many flavors, and often have special seasonal varieties. You'll never get tired of the Kouign-Amann. The rest of the pastries are also fantastic. If you like chocolate, you have to get the Zang Zang Bao. // Ice Cream The soft serve here is incredible. It gets even better because they top it with bits of their amazing pastries like pieces of Kouign-Amann and Feuilletine. I can say with confidence that the pistachio ice cream here is the greatest pistachio ice cream I've ever tasted (including all ice cream- soft serve/regular/gelato). I also sampled the black sesame soft serve, and was blown away from just a taste. I'll definitely be back for the full size. I find it funny how a patisserie does soft serve ice cream better than so many places in NYC whose businesses are dedicated to soft serve. // Service I've been treated with nothing but hospitality at Chanson. The staff is so inviting and helpful. Whenever I had pastry questions, they really seemed to know their stuff. It's a pleasure speaking with them. // Space The place is open and relaxing. It's a great place to have a coffee and pastry and just chill out. I recommend Chanson wholeheartedly. I look forward to trying other things like the babka, croissants, and even the aesthetically pleasing macarons. I also can't wait to come with some friends to try their afternoon tea. -
#6a. Fantastic classics. They have the best chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, and the amazing Speculoos Chocolate Chip, what I consider Davey's best flavor. I love that they do a lot of homemade mix-ins too (e.g. homemade graham cracker in their S'mores ice cream). The ice cream is packed with chunks of mix-ins and they serve huge scoops!Anu’s 5-star review: Davey's has a fun, old school feel but offers ice cream that stacks up to the best of modern ice cream shops. They offer classic flavors, but don't let that bore you because they're executed really, really well. Something that makes Davey's stand out is their mix-ins. They put a LOT in their ice cream, and each scoop is chock full of them. Also cool is that their mix-ins are often housemade. For example, they make their own graham crackers for their S'mores ice cream. Davey's chocolate chip ice creams are outstanding. The Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is the best chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream I've tried, and still remains the best in New York. Even better is the Speculoos Chocolate Chip, which I consider Davey's crown of flavors. It's crazy that Davey's was the first to come up with this. Speculoos cookies are the perfect complement to chocolate chips and vanilla ice cream; I feel like it completes the package. They also do seasonal specials, like their S'mores flavor, which is also fantastic. Also noteworthy are the shakes, which include epic mix-ins like pie. The staff is always so nice. And they load you up with big scoops (thank you... I'm tired of small scoops in the ice cream scene lately). Davey's is one of the best ice cream spots in the East side keeping it real. -
Soft Serve #2a. The Milk & Honey soft serve is one of my favorite ice cream creations in the city. Note that I say "creation"; the reason it's high on this ranking is because the whole package is amazing, not just the ice cream. The seasonal Pear Maple with cinnamon sugar French Toast bites is incredible and might even be better than the Milk & Honey.Anu’s 5-star review: ~ 4.5 stars (rounded up) ~ Important: I only came here for the soft serve, and that's all this review is about. The Milk & honey soft serve creation is incredible. The combination of flavors and textures is perfect: the smooth milky ice cream is complemented perfectly by an addicting sweet & salty honey brittle, crumbly shortbread, and crunchy meringue pieces. And of course the whole thing is drizzled in pure honey. Seriously, that honey brittle is crack. It was still amazing despite the fact that they *definitely* skimped on my toppings compared to what I've seen most people get in pictures... I pray that I'm loaded up with toppings next time. As a honey-loving fiend, I will come here regularly as long as this dessert remains on the menu. -
#8a. Clean tasting flavors. Great implementation of natural and fruit flavors in particular. Never fake or artificial tasting. Unfortunately they lack consistency. Texture is hit or miss, and sometimes scoop sizes are small for a high price tag.Anu’s 4-star review: I'm a fan of Van Leeuwen's ice cream. The flavors are consistently clean and well executed. My favorite staple flavors are Honeycomb, PB Marshmallow Crunch, Salted Caramel, and Chocolate Fudge Brownie. Also, the mint chip is probably the freshest I've tasted. I also love the constantly updating specials at each location. They're usually always interesting and delicious. I usually go for cones, because that's just my style, but the sundaes here are awesome. They come with fun toppings of your choosing such as whipped cream, caramel or chocolate sauce, and cacao nibs. Unfortunately this location is often sold out of flavors I want to try, especially the specials. Maybe I come at bad times, but it's a reoccurring issue so I doubt that. Perhaps keeping higher stock of certain flavors (definitely the specials) would help. This location is often packed with a line out the door, notably during weekends at night. The service is also very slow, even with the long lines. Great ice cream, but this location has to sort out some of the logistics mentioned above. -
Soft Serve #2b. Croissant Butter soft serve is the best sweet & salty treat you can imagine. Actually really great ice cream. Also tried the mango chili ginger flavor which is incredibly refreshing, and good swirled with the croissant butter flavor.Anu’s 5-star review: Alright. The excellence of these pastries is too damn high. I'm hooked, may or may not have fanboy syndrome at this point. Pastry is perfect, fillings are generous, flavors are genius (just like their father, @baker.x). I previously raved about the Banana Split croissant (still my favorite croissant from here) and Ham & Cheese croissant, but here are some more must-try items: - [ Apple Pie Croissant Toast ] This is one of those items at Supermoon where literally everything is on point. Every component has a differing texture and flavor that complement each other. The beautiful apple pie filling dome, bright apple gel, silky bulbs of vanilla and almond creams, and pie crust crumb. All sitting (and surprisingly holding perfect shape) on top of cinnamon sugar croissant toast, which is thick, crisp on the outside and buttery on the inside. The apple pie dome doesn't taste like sickly sweet apple pie filling either. It tastes fresh with the right amount of sweetness. It oozes out when you bite into it too. - [ Rum Raisin Donut ] Just a great donut with excellent execution on the flavor. The donut is your usual doughy goodness, a fluffy vessel dusted with sugar for good measure. The filling in this one is special though. It's a creamy, custardy filling with raisins and subtle rum flavor. So simple but so well made. And it's topped with a cute little chocolate. Btw, Supermoon's social media is pretty hilarious. 10/10 Instagram stories. -
#[CLOSED, formerly 6]. Cupcakes aren't my thing, but who knew some of the best ice cream would be at a cupcake place? LOVE the Cap'n Crunch and Salted Caramel ice creams here. Very smooth scoops, clearly high in quality. Be sure to visit for their rotating special monthly flavors. Fun place and such an underrated ice cream spot! (UPDATE: as of October 2018 Sprinkles has discontinued its ice cream)Anu’s 5-star review: PSA: a very solid ice cream spot is in a cupcake shop. Cupcakes are great and all, but I'm an ice cream guy, and the ice cream here is where it's at. The ice cream here is rich with plentiful mix-ins and swirls. Each flavor base is strong. My favorites are: - Cap'n Crunch - Salted Caramel - PB&J (this was September's monthly special; I'm sorry for you if you missed it) The cupcakes are a nice plus, especially since you can pair them with ice cream in a Sprinkles sundae. I'm not even a cake fan, but I have to admit the cupcakes here are delicious. They're much better than most mediocre cupcakes in the city, and even better than Georgetown Cupcake. -
#2. Long time favorite. Rich ice cream, colossal mix-ins, and the most playful flavor ideas I've seen. Feel like a kid again, without compromising quality.Anu’s 5-star review: Best ice cream in the world (imo), at the Hgh Line. Salted Crack Caramel, The Munchies, Oatmeal Lace, and Ooey Gooey Butter Cake are some of my favorites. They don't offer It Came From Gowanus at this location though unfortunately. Rich ice cream, plentiful and decadent mix-ins. Staff is a little rushed, but probably because they need to work fast with the crowd. Despite the five star review, I was not a big fan of their specialty high line flavor... -
#7a. Awesome flavor rotation, genius mix-ins (pie chunks, anyone?), fun pop-culture influences (as a fan of hip-hop and movies, I love this), and personable staff. Only negative is that it's not as high quality ice cream as the others (Morg, OF, I&V, AH), and quality isn't as consistent. And their scoops are far from perfectly spherical like at Morg's and OddFellows. But's one of my favorites because Mikey's is arguably more delicious and fun. And they don't try hard to be fancy. -
#4b. Edgy and experimental (but still delicious), similar to Morgenstern’s in texture. You wouldn't think their eccentric ingredient combinations work, but boy they do. Consistently great quality. While it's objectively one of the best ice creams in NYC, the "extra unique" flavors make it hard to visit too frequently. One of the most interesting chocolate ice creams is their Shade, which includes smoked dark chocolate and caramelized white chocolate ganache. Basic B, their version of vanilla ice cream, is also one of the most satisfying vanilla ice creams out there. Btw, they have EXPERT scoopers here.Anu’s 5-star review: First, let's just talk ice cream. The flavors might sound too intricate to deliver, but what you read is what you get at Ice & Vice. I don't know how they pull off components like lavender/thyme, jam coulis, popcorn, and sesame, and then integrate them so well with an exceptional ice cream base. They step it up by offering sandwiches (read: get underwest doughnut ice cream sandwich on a cone!), coffee, Konery cones, and shakes, which make it harder to choose than it already is... Finally, the staff is personable and friendly even though they have such large crowds to handle (which they handle very efficiently). Definitely a regular spot for me, and excited about what's to come. -
Soft Serve #3b. Super fun. Satisfies those cereal and ice cream cravings. Especially good when you can't be bothered to worry about getting "high quality scoops". The possible combinations will either be exciting or overwhelming, depending on your personality.Anu’s 5-star review: I feel like the portion size and quality have improved. I'm also constantly impressed with their specials, like the Halloween Monster cereal one which was amazing. Also the nostalgic cartoons on the screens give me a warm feeling inside. It's the perfect vibe. -
Salt & Straw flavors!Anu’s 5-star review: Daily Provisions is a really comfy place to stop by for coffee, breakfast, lunch, or afternoon snack. My favorite part is its bakery. During the weekends I enjoy grabbing a coffee and a fresh cruller or pastry. Speaking of the crullers, they're the best in the game, no question. Even better than the crullers from actual doughnut shops in the city. They offer glazed, cinnamon, maple, and sometimes strawberry. While they're all good, the maple has the slight edge. These crullers have a crisp exterior with a soft and golden interior. They're best when fresh and hot so definitely try and get one from a fresh batch. That being said, because of how moist they are, they don't go stale even after several hours. These remind me of the Indian dessert gulab jamun. If you don't know what that is, just know that's a BIG compliment. To ensure (1) you actually get one and (2) you get there when they're made fresh, I encourage you to come by 11am. For $3.50, it's one of the most satisfying ways to start the weekend. Both the staff and the space are warm and inviting. I enjoy the casual, open vibe. I'm excited to come back and try more bakery items like the Kouign-Amann and the Schnecken (sticky German cinnamon bun). I also hear great things about the cheesecake (apparently it's better than Two Little Red Hens), so I definitely want to try that if I'm around here for dessert. Bonus: This is one of the few places in NYC that serves the amazing Salt & Straw ice cream. The two staple flavors they offer here are Joe Coffee & Freckled Chocolate and Strawberry Cheesecake & Rye, both of which are top notch.
