Ditch the expensive exfoliating creams and try something that’s more natural and just as effective at removing dirt, oil and dead skin from your face – all made from ingredients in your kitchen! Here are a few of my favorite Homemade Facial Scrubs…
This is such a weird post for me! I’ve only ever posted about food here on YHE. But the other day, as I was scouring my kitchen cabinets to get ingredients for one of my favorite scrubs, the thought hit me that maybe you would like to know about some cool homemade facial scrubs, too!
Plus they’re all made from things you have in the kitchen, so it sort of fits on a food blog, right? Haha! Anyway, here are three homemade facial scrubs that I use all. the. time. I hope you give them a try!
Oatmeal & Honey Scrub
One thing I love using on my skin – not just my face but my whole body – is oats. It’s so good for your skin. Oats are filled with natural cleansers so it leaves your skin free of dirt and oil. It also makes your skin smooth and soft. There are tons of products on the market, like lotions and body washes that contain oats. It can help relieve symptoms of eczema, rashes, bites – basically any irritated skin.
Honey is a natural antioxidant, which helps reduce signs of premature aging. It’s also a great moisturizer that leaves your skin silky smooth. It helps shed the dead layer of the skin, balances out oily complexions, stimulates cell renewal by increasing the collagen production, and minimizes lines and wrinkles. What does honey NOT do?!
What you need:
- oats
- honey
- water
How to do it:
- All you need to make this scrub is mix together a handful of oats, a squeeze of honey and a little bit of water.
- Mix together in a little bowl or right in the palm of your hand, and lightly massage onto your clean skin. Rinse off. Ta da! Soft, smooth skin! This can also be used on your body as well.
Baking Soda Scrub
Rustle through your baking cabinet and grab some baking soda for this next scrub. Baking soda is an excellent exfoliator, a skin-brightener, and an all-over complexion smoother. It’s a chemical-free anti-bacterial agent, and helps with many skin issues such as acne, bacterial infection on the hands and feet, etc. This is one of my favorite scrubs because it’s gentle but totally effective.
What you need:
- baking soda
- liquid facial cleanser
- water
How to do it:
- Splash warm water onto your face with your hands.
- Pump a quarter-sized dollop of your favorite facial cleanser into your hand. (If you don’t use a liquid facial cleanser, work up a good lather from a bar of gentle soap into your hand.
- Pour a teaspoon of baking soda into your hand and mix well to combine with your facial cleanser.
- Massage the cleanser and baking soda onto your skin in circular motions, concentrating especially on areas where you may suffer from dry or dead skin. Don’t rub too hard! If the baking soda scrub stings, rinse off immediately. Otherwise, rub for 30 seconds. You can do this once a week.
Corn Meal & Honey Scrub
Cornmeal isn’t just for making polenta, lol! This might sound super weird, but cornmeal is an awesome exfoliant. It removes dirt from your pores and eliminates dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and clean. It also gets rid of extra oil but doesn’t dry out your pores and skin.
Cornmeal contains tons of Vitamin C which helps build and restore connective tissue in skin and minimizes scarring. It also contains Vitamin A which helps your skin retain moisture and elasticity. The cornmeal itself also acts like a sponge, absorbing excess oil, leaving skin with a soft, matte appearance. This scrub is a little more harsh than the other two so be careful not to scrub too hard. Your skin might be a little red after using but it will be as soft as a babies behind afterward! 😉
What you need:
- ½ TSP cornmeal
- 1 TSP honey
- A bit of water
How to do it:
- Blend the cornmeal, honey and water together until it’s a paste.
- Apply it on your face and neck with a gentle circular motion.
- Leave it for 1 minute and then rinse it out with warm water.
I’ve also swapped the honey with my facial cleanser in this before. You can apply this scrub once a week.
