What is an audio technician and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
4 min read

Audio Technicians are tasked with setting up recording equipment, sound systems, helping with recordings or sound production, testing equipment, and making adjustments. These people either work for themselves in an entrepreneurship capacity, work for recording studio owners, or concert venues. Some people mistake Audio technicians with Sound Engineers; though they work in the same company, they get more credit. For this job, you don't need much educational qualification to qualify; all you need is the required skill.

There are some skills you need to qualify for this job. Some of them include a natural likeness for sounds, strong knowledge of IT, good oral skills, good communication skills, and strong attention to detail. And as for the salary structure, it depends on three factors: the size of the organization, the country you work in, and experience. In a country like the United States, an Audio Technician earns between $40,096 and $56,140 per annum. But mind you, it can go higher or lower depending on the factors we listed above. Again, those who took the entrepreneur part earn higher.
