Miiverse

From Zelda Wiki, the Zelda encyclopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Miiverse was a social network run by Nintendo. It launched on November 18, 2012 alongside Wii U, and on December 9, 2013 for Nintendo 3DS.[2] The network allowed for players to share their gaming achievements, screenshots, discussions, and handwritten notes or artwork, and many games across both platforms contained unique features relying on Miiverse integration.

A web portal was opened in April 2013, which allowed access to the social network via web browsers on computers, tablets and smart devices.[3] After five years of activity, Miiverse's service ended on November 8th, 2017.[1]

Overview

Miiverse could be accessed by a dedicated icon on the HOME Menu of either the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS. Players would signed in using their Nintendo Network ID, and would be represented by the Mii character associated with that account.

The majority of games released for both platforms had a dedicated Community on Miiverse, where posts related to those games could be made. Posts initially had a limit of 100 characters, later increased to 200 characters.[4] Alternatively, posts could be made using a small, black and white handwritten note or drawing. If the player had a game suspended while viewing Miiverse, and was posting in that game's Community, then they could optionally attach a screenshot of that game's present state. In many cases, this made Miiverse the only official means of capturing screenshots for particular games. Furthermore, with every post, the player could select one of six facial expressions for their Mii to make, and had the option to mark a post as containing spoilers. Users could comment on posts and "like" them, which was styled as "Yeah!".

The Legend of Zelda Series Community announced during a Nintendo Direct

Several special Communities existed, including a The Legend of Zelda Series Community, and various "Developers' Room" Communities where Nintendo staff and other game developers could make announcements or hold "Miitings".[5] Users were able to add others as "friends" or simply follow them, send personal messages, and create a profile that included their favorite Communities, as well as a favorite post which acted as a banner image for their profile. Users could view an Activity Feed consisting of posts by their friends and followed users, and could even make posts directly to this Feed, independent of any Community.

Following a site-wide redesign that debuted on July 29, 2015, users could no longer post directly to their Activity Feed.[6] Posts to Communities could be made as standard "Play Journal" posts, or designated as "Discussions" that would be more prominently featured in that Community along with the most popular recent drawings. Users could also save screenshots to a personal album without the need to post them in Communities; up to 100 screenshots could be saved for later use. A daily limit of 30 posts per user was enacted, and the character limit per post was increased to 400.

The end of Miiverse's service, which would come on November 8th, 2017, was announced several months prior.[1] This would disable Miiverse integration features in all applicable games. Users were given an option to request an archive of their posts on the network, including drawings, screenshots, and any un-posted screenshots in their album, which would be e-mailed to them shortly after the network had shut down.

Miiverse Integration in Games

Many games contained features that interacted with Miiverse, allowing them to both send and receive data from the network. The most common feature was the ability to make posts to a game's Community from within the game itself.

The Miiverse stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Online games, such as Tri Force Heroes and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, did not allow the player to suspend the game while connected to other players. Thus, the ability to make posts from within these games presented a work-around for sharing screenshots. For example, in Tri Force Heroes, Link could acquire the Camera, which could capture a screenshot during his adventures in the Drablands with other Links. By returning to the Miiverse Gallery later on, he would be given the option to attach any one of his saved screenshots to a Miiverse post.[7] Likewise, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, screenshots could be taken of a recent match while viewing its Replay. In the Wii U version, entire replays (up to a certain length) could be uploaded to YouTube from within the game, with the resulting video being cross-posted to Miiverse.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U also features a free, downloadable Miiverse stage. The stage has a basic gray and white appearance with green edges on its platforms, similar to Miiverse's interface. Its unique feature is that actual Miiverse drawings in support of the current fighters would periodically appear in the background. Each of the game's 55 unique fighters, as well as each type of Mii Fighter, was given their own special "Support" Community on Miiverse in which only handwritten posts could be made; select posts for the chosen fighters would be downloaded from Miiverse into the stage whenever it was played.[8]

In The Wind Waker HD, the Tingle Bottle replaces the Tingle Tuner from the original game. Using this Item, the player could write a message and optionally select one of Link's Pictographs to place in the Bottle, then have the young hero toss it to sea.[9] This would, in effect, post that message and Pictograph to The Wind Waker HD's Miiverse Community.[10] These posts would be randomly distributed to other Miiverse users to be found in floating Tingle Bottles while sailing the Great Sea.[11] After collecting these Bottles, the player can "Yeah!" or respond to the messages within, and even save the attached Pictograph to Link's Picto Box for use in side-quests or making Figurines.

Miiverse Stamps

Making a post using Miiverse Stamps in Tri Force Heroes

Another feature made possible by posting to Miiverse from within a game is the ability to use Miiverse Stamps in handwritten posts. They are pre-made, black-and-white images that can be stamped anywhere onto the drawing, and they are usually required to be unlocked in-game before they could be used. Miiverse Stamps were featured in Tri Force Heroes, Twilight Princess HD and My Nintendo Picross: Twilight Princess. Also containing Zelda-related Stamps are Mario Kart 8, NES Remix, and NES Remix 2.

Tri Force Heroes

Obtaining any of the Outfits in Tri Force Heroes also unlocks a Miiverse Stamp of that Outfit. All other Miiverse Stamps, including the artwork of Link used for Communication Icons, several characters' faces, speech bubbles, and various symbols, are unlocked by default. There is also an ornate background that is automatically applied to all drawings, but can be erased or modified. The Version 2.0.0 update adds Miiverse Stamps of the two added Outfits, as well as the faces of King Tuft and Princess Styla.
