Aalto design classics

Aino and Alvar Aalto are undoubtedly Finland’s most renowned designer duo in the fields of design and architecture. Known for their warm, humane approach, the couple’s work combines functionality, beauty, and a deep respect for materials. Aino Aalto (1894–1949) focused particularly on everyday objects and home aesthetics, while Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is celebrated for his monumental architectural projects as well as his furniture and lighting designs. Together, they created holistic interior projects and design classics admired around the world.

Artek: Beloved Aalto lights and furniture

Aino and Alvar Aalto were both involved in founding Artek in 1935. Alvar Aalto designed countless iconic pieces for Artek, including the Stool 60, the Beehive pendant lamp, and the Paimio chair. Aalto’s durable furniture is equally popular in homes and public spaces, with many of the designs based on his innovative L-leg construction made from bent plywood.

Aino Aalto also left a strong mark on Artek’s collection. Her designs include the elegant Side table 606, the AMA 500 pendant lamp, and the ceramic Riihitie plant pots, originally created for the terrace of the Aaltos’ home in Munkkiniemi.

Aalto tableware and glassware by Iittala

The Aaltos’ collaboration with Iittala glassworks has resulted in some of Finnish design’s most iconic classics. Alvar Aalto’s Savoy vase, designed in 1936, was first introduced at the Paris World Fair in 1937. Today, the vase is globally known as the Aalto vase, its undulating form an enduring symbol of modern design.

In 1932, Aino Aalto designed a glassware series for Iittala, originally known as Bölgeblick. The collection earned a gold medal at the Milan Triennale the same year. The Aino Aalto glasses, still in production, feature a clear and simple design inspired by ripples on water.
