Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Nguyen.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always felt a deep connection to nature, people and making spaces beautiful. After college, I worked in a variety of roles in the startup world, from marketing to web design. It was an incredible experience but I knew that as an artist, I needed to find a better way to put my creativity to work.
After some trial and error, I discovered that weddings were the perfect fit for me. Through flowers, I am able to transform ordinary places into magical settings and bring a couple’s love story to life.
After picking up my first pair of clippers in 2016, I ditched the desk life for the floral life and started my wedding design business. STILL is an evolution of my professional background working in tech and my personal background honing skills in design, color theory, and arranging flowers.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When people ask what I do for work, their response is often, “Wow, it must be so much fun to play with flowers all day!” It always makes me laugh.
Flowers are beautiful and I’m still in awe of them every day. The truth, though? Floral design is hard work. Schlepping around heavy buckets full of dirty water and rose thorns constantly cutting up your arms isn’t as glamorous as Instagram would have you believe.
Starting any small business is not for the faint of heart! Especially in the wedding industry. From navigating marketing to finances, there are many challenges to work through as a one-woman show. Even when I am knee-deep in piles of stems and leaves, I am incredibly grateful for the clients I have the privilege of working with and all that I get to create and share with the world. It’s worth the obstacles.
STILL – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At STILL, I believe in bringing the outdoors in. There is nothing that beats the smell of wood burning stoves, pine trees, and the salty sea. Not surprising for a kid from the Pacific Northwest. I’m inspired by the small, quiet buts of nature — may be a fallen branch or a stem that bends just so — that make you stop for a moment and root you in the present.
I design wedding flowers for down-to-earth couples who care about having a meaningful wedding. We take the time to get to know our clients so we’re able to create an event that is not only beautiful but one that is a true representation of who they are.
We don’t believe that your wedding has to be an over-the-top affair to be special. It’s the culmination of the details — individually labeled bouquets, a sprig of rosemary tucked into a napkin, a few blooms tied to a chair — that make your guests feel special and loved. We care about the quiet, little things.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proud of many moments in my journey so far, but most recently I am proud of designing and building a custom arch for a wedding last summer. It’s made out of beautiful cedar wood that we stained and it continues to be a staple in our ceremony designs!
