Archie (Japanese: アオギリ Aogiri) is the head of Team Aqua. He is the only character in the games to have the Trainer classes Aqua Leader (Japanese: アクアだんリーダー Team Aqua Leader) and Team Aqua (Japanese: アクアだん Team Aqua).
In the core series games
In Pokémon Ruby, Archie helps the player against Team Magma. He does not have an active role in the storyline and cannot be battled.
In Pokémon Sapphire, Emerald, and Alpha Sapphire, he first appears in the Oceanic Museum in Slateport City, trying to steal the Devon GoodsSE/Devon PartsAS from Captain Stern. In Sapphire and Alpha Sapphire, Team Aqua members later steal a Meteorite from Professor Cozmo and try to turn Mt. Chimney into a lakeS/to fashion a Mega Stone for KyogreAS. In Emerald, he instead appears with Aqua members at Meteor Falls, and acts as a temporary ally with the player against Team Magma who instead have stolen the Meteorite and are trying to find Groudon. After, thanking the player for his help and briefly asking if he is on their side, he departs and is not seen for a while. Shelly and several grunts later raid the Weather Institute, and Archie steals the Red OrbSE/Blue OrbAS from Mt. Pyre. Later, he and the Team Aqua members turn up in Slateport again as Captain Stern announces a discovery he has made about a seafloor cavern. Team Aqua promptly steals the Submarine Explorer 1 that Captain Stern has built and goes for the Seafloor Cavern to awaken Kyogre. However he is unable to control the Legendary Pokémon. After, Kyogre is calmed, Archie sees the error of his ways and disbands Team Aqua after returning the stolen orb.
During the Delta Episode in Alpha Sapphire, Archie is first seen in his hideout, where Zinnia shows up to take his Key Stone in order to summon Rayquaza, doing so just as the player reaches his room. Afterwards, Archie has Matt hand the player his Sharpedonite, figuring that now that he's lost his Key Stone, he no longer has need for the Mega Stone, either. After the events of the Delta Episode, he apologizes his Admins for his actions, deciding to start anew as a Trainer. Later, Archie can be chosen as a Multi Battle partner at the Battle Maison.
In Omega Ruby, Archie and his Admins appear at the Battle Resort when the player first visits it after the Delta Episode. During the brief meeting, Archie alludes to his role in Alpha Sapphire, but dismisses such possibility as nonsense, before having Matt give the player a Sharpedonite.
An alternate universe version of Archie, as he appears in Generation III, appears as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. He is one of the first pair of bosses the player must face, along with Maxie. When the player reaches him in Team Rocket's Castle, he expresses dismay that the player defeated his Team Rainbow Rocket Grunts, considering them his crew even though they are not members of Team Aqua. Archie explains that, in the world he came from, he successfully completed his plans to expand the oceans, only to be swallowed by a massive tidal wave during his moment of victory, subsequently finding himself in the game's world. Though he intends to return to his world, he decides to use Kyogre to turn the game's world into his ideal state as well. He battles the player and, despite using Kyogre against them, loses. He then allows the player to activate the switch in his office painting so they may advance. Later, Archie enters the main hall of the castle while Guzma is helping the player hold off two Team Rainbow Rocket Grunts, only to encounter Maxie, mistaking him for the Maxie from his universe. The two decide to battle to resolve their conflict once and for all, only to be warped away by a mysterious force as they leave.

Pokémon the Series
History
Archie debuted in the Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire episode Gaining Groudon. After Shelly, acting on Archie's orders, successfully released Kyogre from Team Magma's mobile sea base, Archie emerged from the sea inside Team Aqua's submarine, and used the Red Orb, which had recently come in his possession, to take control of Kyogre, having it destroy the base completely as Team Magma narrowly escaped. Later, on Monsu Island, Archie met up with Maxie and negotiated the release of two Team Magma Grunts in exchange for the Blue Orb, not knowing that it had already been absorbed by Ash's Pikachu. When Team Rocket invaded Team Aqua's submarine in an attempt to steal Kyogre, Archie accused Team Magma of being behind it.
In The Scuffle of Legends, Team Rocket's unsuccessful stealing attempt caused Kyogre to be released into the ocean. As a result, Archie took flight with his personal miniature aircraft, and started controlling Kyogre from midair using the Red Orb. However, it was revealed that the Orb was actually controlling him instead; maddened by its effects, he intended to sink the entire island into the ocean, not caring that many of his own men were still on it. When Lance tried to retrieve the Red Orb from Archie, he had Kyogre attack the Champion-level Trainer, and it proved to be extremely strong, easily countering Lance's Gyarados's Hyper Beam with its own. Suddenly, the Red Orb absorbed itself into Archie's body, bonding with him and driving him further into insanity.
After Pikachu freed Groudon from Team Aqua's submarine, the two Legendary Pokémon started battling each other. Soon, Lance understood that Groudon was trying to stop Kyogre from sinking the island into the sea, so Ash and his friends decided to help it to do so. Having Beautifly and Mudkip attack Archie's aircraft, May and Brock managed to distract Archie and Kyogre long enough for Groudon to fire a Solar Beam at the Sea Basin Pokémon, defeating it. The Red Orb then debonded with Archie, causing him to lose consciousness and fall off his aircraft, only to be caught mid-fall by Lance's Dragonite. When Archie later woke up, he seemed to have forgotten everything, asking Shelly what happened. He then united everyone else around to watch as the Orbs disappeared, freeing Kyogre and Groudon and allowing them to return to their natural habitats. It is unknown what happened to Archie or the rest of Team Aqua after this point.

History
Ruby & Sapphire arc
Archie is one of the two main antagonists of this chapter. He leads Team Aqua in their quest to awaken Kyogre to expand the sea. Team Aqua clashes with Team Magma, who aim to awaken Groudon to expand the land. Archie also serves as the head of Hoenn TV, which he manipulates to create anti-Team Magma propaganda while covering up the actions of his own team.
Archie debuts in Lombre Larceny, where he leads Shelly, Matt, and Amber in stealing the heart component for the Submarine Explorer 1. Although the three succeed in their mission, Archie berates them for not finishing off Sapphire, Gabby, and Ty, who had seen the entire incident. Despite this, he promotes the three to admin status and names the Subleaders of the Sea Scheme.
After Team Aqua manages to successfully stop the volcanic activity of Mt. Chimney, Archie is attacked by Maxie. Maxie furiously blames Team Aqua for their propaganda and challenges Archie to a battle. Archie agrees, but the battle ends in a tie despite Archie's type advantage. The two leaders stop fighting after realizing that neither team will accomplish their goals when each has an important piece required to awaken their respective super-ancient Pokémon rests. They decide that the best option is a temporary truce so that both teams will head to the Seafloor Cavern together. When Team Aqua and Magma meet, they fit the Submarine Explorer 1 with its heart component and head underwater.
Upon arriving, the teams end their truce and proceed to head their separate ways. Archie manages to awaken Kyogre first, giving the advantage to Team Aqua. Despite this, Kyogre stops moving from where it emerged while Groudon continues expanding its influence over the Hoenn region. Finding this suspicious, Archie assumes it's the work of Maxie and sends Amber to investigate. Amber heads over and discovers that Team Magma secretly had the Red and Blue Orbs, two jewels that can control Groudon and Kyogre. Amber attacks Tabitha and steals the Blue Orbs for Archie. Although Amber asks his leader for help, Archie instead locks the two inside the Submarine Explorer 1 and sends it to the bottom of the sea without the heart component needed to survive the undersea pressure. With the Blue Orb now in his possession, Archie begins to use it to control Kyogre.
The power of the Red and Blue Orbs proves to be too much for Archie and Maxie, who are later possessed by Kyogre and Groudon instead. The two are confronted by Ruby and Sapphire, who had arrived to defeat the two villains. Ruby and Sapphire begin battling Archie and Maxie, but note their behavior to be strange. Despite this, Ruby and Sapphire manage to stop Archie and Maxie's movements, leaving them enough time to remove the Orbs from their hands. When Ruby attempts to remove the Orbs from Archie and Maxie, he notices that the Orbs are now stuck to the leaders' hands. The Orbs recede into Archie and Maxie's bodies, fully putting them under the control of Kyogre and Groudon. With their new power, Archie and Maxie take Ruby, Sapphire, and all the Team Aqua and Magma Grunts back to the surface.
They fly to Sootopolis City, where Kyogre and Groudon had gone to finish their battle. The two leaders begin fighting together their respective super-ancient Pokémon. Archie and Maxie are finally defeated when Ruby and Sapphire use a piece of the Grand Meteor combined with their Pokémon's attacks to force the Red and Blue Orbs out of Archie and Maxie's bodies. The plan works, but it causes the Orbs to move to Ruby and Sapphire's bodies and creates an explosion that sends them flying.
Sometime later, Ruby returns and teams up with Courtney to stop Kyogre and Groudon once and for all. Their plan fails, and a hidden Archie kills Courtney by dragging her into a collapsing Cave of Origin. After Kyogre and Groudon are successfully defeated with the assistance of Rayquaza and Norman, Archie and Maxie reveal themselves and attempt to kill Ruby to take back the Orbs and awaken Kyogre and Groudon again. They are approached by the Champion Wallace, who attacks the two leaders to rescue Ruby. Wallace is forced to give up when Archie and Maxie reveal they are keeping Winona hostage, leaving him open to be attacked and defeated.
Victorious, Archie and Maxie gloat over the heroes' defeat only to be interrupted by the appearance of Ruby's Feebas, Feefee. Feefee attempts to stop Archie and Maxie, but is easily swatted away. Archie and Maxie begin beating Feefee and insult her ragged appearance. Seeing this angers Ruby, who states that Feefee possesses beauty on the inside even if her outside is ugly. This change in hear allows Feefee to evolve into a Milotic. Ruby and Feefee team up with Sapphire to battle and finally defeat Archie and Maxie's Pokémon. Archie and Maxie still refuse to give up and escape with the Orbs in Wallace's aircar. By powering up their Plusle and Minun with the New Mauville generator, Ruby and Sapphire finish Archie and Maxie off by trapping them in a dome of electricity.
Emerald arc
It is revealed that Archie and Maxie were rescued from the electrical sphere by Sird. Sird reveals that Archie and Maxie's bodies are breaking down due to the effect of letting Kyogre and Groudon possess them. She offers a suit of armor to one of the villains that can slow down the process of their decaying, but only to whomever defeats the other in battle. Archie manages to defeat Maxie and wins the armor, this becoming the armored man, Guile Hideout.
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc
Archie is revealed to still be alive. Along with Maxie, Archie travels to the Kanto region, where they find Bill, who had obtained the shattered remains of the Red and Blue Orbs from Team Rocket in the FireRed & LeafGreen arc. They attack Bill and steal the shards from him, which have now regenerated back into their original forms as Orbs. They steal Bill's boat and use it to travel back to the Hoenn region. Upon arriving, Archie and Maxie are approached by Red and Green, two Kanto Pokédex holders that are friends with Bill. Red and Green attack Maxie and Archie to avenge their injured friend and retrieve the stolen Orbs. To combat their opponents, Archie and Maxie reveal they have learned to use Mega Evolution and use it to face the two Pokédex holders, who counter with their own Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
The battle is interrupted by Amber and Blaise. Although Blaise finds the new appearance of their leaders suspicious, Amber reveals that they summoned Kyogre and Groudon from their resting places with the power of Hoopa. Immediately after, Kyogre and Groudon appear, having followed the presence of the Orbs. Archie and Maxie use the Orbs to revert Kyogre and Groudon into their Primal forms, greatly increasing their power to the point where they easily defeat Red and Green. Kyogre and Groudon's rampage is interrupted by Ruby and Emerald, who attempt to fight the super-ancient Pokémon but are unable to damage them. Archie and Maxie use Kyogre and Groudon to easily blast Ruby and Emerald out of the sky, easily defeating them. With their opponents on the ground, Archie and Maxie gloat over their victory and reveal that their return is all for the sake of saving the planet from the meteoroid threatening to destroy it.
Later, at the Meteor Village, Archie trains alongside Maxie in order to teach Kyogre Origin Pulse. They were given a training space by the village Elder, who agreed to help in their attempt to stop the meteoroid. After a day, Archie and Maxie finish their training and exit their training space. Just as they do so, Rayquaza sees Kyogre and Groudon through Hoopa's ring and attempts to attack by flying towards the ring. The experience scares Hoopa, causing it to accidentally send Rayquaza to another ring connecting the village to Route 120. Archie and Maxie chase after Rayquaza and arrive at Route 120 by forcing their way through Hoopa's ring. They decide to test the moves Kyogre and Groudon learned on Rayquaza, but are interrupted by chunks of the meteoroid falling down on them. To destroy the chunks, Archie, Maxie, Ruby, and Sapphire combine the powers of Primal Kyogre, Primal Groudon and Rayquaza into a single attack.
As the three super-ancient Pokémon's attack struggles to destroy the meteoroid chunk, Archie and Maxie's bodies run out of energy and begin to break down. The combined attack eventually breaks the meteoroid chunk into pieces, which fall onto Kyogre and Groudon, knocking them out. After watching from afar, Amber and Blaise go down to see if their leaders are safe, only to find them both in the process of fading away. Archie and Maxie explain to the two that after their "deaths", their spirits ended up in another world, where they at one point melded together and became one. After a hole to the real world was opened, an unknown voice called out to them, asking to protect the planet. After escaping from the world, they regained their bodies, albeit slightly different, gained Mega Evolution, and stole the orbs from Bill in order to save the planet from destruction. Just as they disappear completely, Archie and Maxie ask their subordinates to protect the planet.
Diamond & Pearl arc
In High-tailing It from Haunter, Archie was briefly seen when the Advanced level Grunt was talking to Diamond about the past accomplishments of the Pokédex holders.

Archie owns multiple Walrein. One was first sent out to battle Maxie's Camerupt. Despite the type advantage, the battle ended in a tie due to use of both Pokémon's Abilities. At the Seafloor Cavern, he was used alongside Maxie's Camerupt to battle Ruby's Mumu and Sapphire's Chic. Although the Pokédex holders fought with powerful moves, Walrein and Camerupt emerged the victors, but left their Trainers open to be attacked. At Sootopolis City, Archie sent out Walrein to battle Mumu and Chic once again. This time, Walrein was defeated by a combination of Sky Uppercut and Muddy Water. - Main article: Super-ancient Pokémon (Adventures) → Kyogre
Kyogre is a super-ancient Pokémon that clashed with Groudon in the past. Team Aqua sought to reawaken it to achieve their goal in expanding the sea. After awakening it and obtaining the Blue Orb, Archie controls Kyogre. The prolonged use of the Blue Orb instead leads to Archie being controlled by Kyogre as well. After the Orbs are removed from Archie and Maxie's bodies, they move to Ruby and Sapphire instead. With the power of the Orbs and Rayquaza, Kyogre goes back to the Seafloor Cavern to return to its slumber. In the thirteenth chapter, Kyogre is awakened from its slumber by Hoopa, who was manipulated by Blaise and Amber to summon the super-ancient Pokémon so they can achieve Primal Reversion. After meeting up with Archie again, Kyogre was given the Blue Orb to become Primal Kyogre.

Trivia
- In Pokémon Emerald, the player battles Archie only once, while Maxie is fought three times.
- In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Archie's height is 5'9" (1.75m); the guide that contains his concept art mistakenly says he is 5'7" (1.7m).
