Soft-Boiled (Japanese: タマゴうみ Egg Lay), formatted as Softboiled prior to Pokémon X and Y, is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. It was TM41 in Generation I. It is the signature move of Chansey, Blissey, and in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Happiny as well.

Generation I

Soft-Boiled restores up to 50% of the user's maximum HP, rounded down. It will fail if the user's current HP is already equal to its maximum HP. Soft-Boiled has a PP of 10.

In the Generation I handheld games, Soft-Boiled will also fail if the difference between the user's maximum HP and current HP is 255 modulo 256 (i.e. if this difference is 255 or 511). This does not occur in Pokémon Stadium.

Generation II to IV

Soft-Boiled no longer fails if the difference between the user's maximum HP and current HP is 255 modulo 256.

Soft-Boiled can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Egg Bomb to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn.

In Generation III, Soft-Boiled has several oversights:

• The summary states that the move has 100% accuracy, even though it targets the user and thus ignores accuracy and evasion checks.
• If used immediately after Brick Break, the egg will be rendered as transparent rather than solid.
• In the 1.0 release of the English versions of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, whenever the player uses the move on a Pokémon that is fainted or at full health, the game says "This item can't be used on that Pokémon." In the 1.1 and 1.2 releases, the word "item" was removed.

Generation V to VIII

Soft-Boiled now restores 50% of the user's maximum HP, rounded up. If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Soft-Boiled, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.

Soft-Boiled's PP has been reduced from 10 to 5.

Outside of battle

Prior to Generation VII and in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Soft-Boiled can also be used outside of battle to transfer some of the user's HP to another party Pokémon. Each use will transfer 20% of the user's HP, up to the target's maximum HP. The move will not work if the user has 20% or less HP left.

Although Soft-Boiled can be learned in Pokémon Emerald from a Move Tutor at the Battle Frontier, no Pokémon naturally available in the game are able to do so. Therefore, all Pokémon capable of using the Move Tutor must be traded into the game from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen or caught using an event item.

Pokémon Rumble Rush

In Pokémon Rumble Rush, all status moves including Soft-Boiled could only be used by opposing Pokémon and could not be obtained on any caught Pokémon. Soft-Boiled could be seen as a move used by Boss Chansey and Blissey.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Soft-Boiled is Blissey's second move. It is obtained by evolving at level 4 and upgrading Heal Pulse into it instead of Safeguard. The user throws an egg to an ally; healing the user and the designated ally. Holds 2 uses in reserve and cannot be used more than once every 2s. At level 10, the attack can hold an extra use in reserve.

Trivia

• The TM for Soft-Boiled can be taught to the fewest number of Pokémon of any TM.
• The NPC who gives out TM41 in Generation I says that only Chansey can learn Soft-Boiled. However, Mew's existence was supposed to be kept secret, which explains the apparent omission.
