¡Viva la libertad, carajo!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elon Musk with a chainsaw from Milei, bearing the phrase in backwards.

¡Viva la libertad, carajo!, sometimes shortened to "VLLC," is the catchphrase of Javier Milei, president of Argentina since 2023.[1] The phrase translates into English as "Long Live Freedom, Damn It!"[2] or "Long Live Freedom, Goddamnit!"[3]

Origin and use

[edit]

A self-described anarcho-capitalist,[4] Milei is known for his political antics, including wielding chainsaws as props, waving black-and-yellow flags associated with anarcho-capitalism,[5] and using vulgar language.[6][7][8][9][10] Milei first popularized "¡Viva la libertad, carajo!"[11][12] during his parliamentary run in 2021[13] and then again in his 2023 presidential campaign.[14][15] He most often uses it as a concluding phrase in his speeches.[16][17][18][19] He has also used it in captions on his social media posts, such as photos with then-U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and actor and filmmaker Sylvester Stallone.[20][21][22][23]

In 2024, a six-part docuseries about Milei titled ¡Viva la libertad, carajo! released.[24]

At the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Elon Musk bore a chainsaw from Milei with the catchphrase engraved on the bar.
