Protestantism became established in parts of Europe in the period after 1517; so began that branch of Christianity. Due to the Reformation which occurred at different periods in different states many churches which were originally Roman Catholic have subsequently become Protestant (mainly Lutheran, Presbyterian / Reformed or Anglican).
Many establishments that are now ordinary church congregations began as monastic or collegiate churches, and some continue to carry the name of "abbey", "minster" or "collegiate church".
