Founded in 1994, Ink Global is a global media company connecting companies with travelers; with a particular specialty in travel, inflight magazines and Targeted Advertising for luxury and retail brands. Clients include CNBC, easyJet and Ryanair. In addition, Ink is is involved in APEX and runs the Airline Retail Conferences and China Travel Retail. In November 2009, Ink was ranged by the Wall Street Journal as the world’s biggest producer of inflight magazine, pulling it up to the world’s leading global media company in this particular domain.[1]

Overview

[edit]

In 1994, Simon Leslie, Ink Group Publishing Director, and Michael Keating, Executive Creative Director, founded Ink to service two small airlines – one in the Middle East and the other in Africa. Jeffrey O’Rourke, current Ink Chief Executive, for his part, founded eSubstance in 2000[2], an online-offline content publishing company, acquired Ink in 2004 to create the company as it stands today.

In the past 16 years the company has grown, such that The Sunday Times referred it on 2008 as part of the top 100 firms which has grown the most rapidly[3]. Indeed, today Ink is handling over three dozen titles for carriers from 17 countries[4]. Moreover, Ink has approximately 300 staff and offices in London, Singapore, New York and Atlanta. The Wall Street Journal revealed that Ink's efficiency comes from running many titles from each of its four offices, sharing overhead expenses and developing a common culture of selling ads across borders.[5]

Like most other airline-magazine publishers, Ink bears all the costs of producing the magazines and pays airlines an amount tied to passenger traffic and the carriers' markets. Most of all, it appears that Ink encourages its editors to be creative. [6]

Work

[edit]

Publishing

[edit]

Ink’s portfolio comprises of over 40 magazines produced in 17 languages across Europe, the US and Central America, Africa, Asia, Asia Pacific and the Middle East; and also sells advertising in over 100 countries. Ranging from magazines, retail catalogues, entertainment guides, websites and apps.[7]

Moreover, Ink manages and sells media space on headrest covers, table trays, menus, timetables and seatbacks for many airlines.

Advertising

[edit]

Besides the magazines, Ink sells dynamically generated advertising on print-at-home boarding passes, smartphone boarding passes, web pages and confirmation emails. Advertising is automatically chosen and delivered according to parameters such as destination, origination, male/female, business/economy class and passenger nationality.[8] In addition Ink offers its clients electronic versions of onboard magazines, “eMagazines”, bespoke websites and content tailored for Smartphone and iPad applications.

Conferences and Events

[edit]

Twice a year, Ink produces ARC, the Airline Retail Conference, which brings together airlines, inflight retail concessionaires and brands that wish to market their products to travelers. The event is held in Europe in July and in Asia in February. Ink also produces the ARC companion publication and show directory, Airline Retail News.

Finally, Ink produces the Airline Passenger Experience Media Platform in association with APEX.
