Socking spammer
Hello again Nyttend. Considering your recent offer to receive requests, here's a case: Umair78430 and Umair78630 (there may be others that I've not discovered). Links: peacequarters.com, hajjumrahpackages.us, cheapumrahpackage.us. Thanks again, —PaleoNeonate - 13:59, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
Note: I'm not sure if it's actual socking since one was used after the other and I see no blocklog entries for those. It's also not refspam but external link spamming. But definitely multiple accounts pushing common links. —PaleoNeonate - 14:09, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry for the trouble, I noticed that Doc James was the one who made the offer to receive cases and that it was in relation to dead link spamming. I have reported this at WT:WPSPAM instead. Thanks, —PaleoNeonate - 14:17, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
DC visit
APK's answer is likely correct - I'd forgotten that the South Korean president was on a state visit. (I don't come downtown for work much any more, so I miss a lot of the fun stuff as it's going on.)
Folklife was today (OK, yesterday), not Saturday...between that and the opera at Wolf Trap on Saturday night I've barely had a moment to sit and think, let alone write much. (Might be the same tomorrow, too...if I feel up to it I may take my free day and go to the National Gallery.) So I didn't have to worry about ducking out of the way. I saw the storm coming from my house, actually...brought some laundry down for the wash, and when I emerged ten minutes later the sky had turned completely grey. The heavens opened for fair about five minutes after that, so I didn't get my swim for the day. (For what it's worth, the Festival was great fun. Less fun was the six-or-seven-mile walk we took around the Tidal Basin and Lincoln Memorial before heading up Capitol Hill for dinner. Though I will admit it was more pleasant than last year, at least.)
There's a remarkable density of NRHP sites in downtown, I agree...and it seems like they add more every year. I think I used to pass maybe three on the way to the office, when I worked at ICE...which isn't bad, considering I passed maybe five buildings total on that walk. DC's funny about it, though...lots of government buildings make the list, but the local historical society sometimes lags a lot more than I'd expect. Like with the Mary E. Surratt Boarding House - that wasn't listed until after I graduated college, and I know it's been around long enough... (Good restaurant, by the way, for the next time you're in the neighborhood.) I wonder how much of that would turn out to be federal influence. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:30, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- I'll try to get a look in sometime. I don't think I have another heavy weekend for a while. :-)
- I'm a bit surprised, though - I've never found that much of a problem with DC coordinates. Maybe I'm just looking at the wrong places. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:39, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Dragonlance articles by quality log
I have no idea what happened to Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Dragonlance articles by quality log. The log says you deleted it on the 30th, and it somehow got autopatrolled at the same time. There's nothing in the log saying it was restored after your deletion. Glitch? Please redelete. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 16:49, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
Quick question
Hey, quick question on this. I don't do a lot of userspace/draft work, but I was under the impression that we typically don't allow drafts of live articles as a userpage if it was live in article space like at Plaza Ventures. I only tagged it because I noticed it after sending the live article to AfD. TonyBallioni (talk) 01:15, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
Couple of things
i) What were you saying here? And ii) I agree there's 'nothing wrong with a blank page'- but there's everything wrong with the earlier edit-summary and spam which is now still in the history. Take care! — fortunavelut luna 11:31, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
The second sentence of the FXCM article is currently beginning discussion at WP:DR/N. The clerk hasn't picked up the case yet, though. You might want to participate. Basic issue: FXCM did some illegal trading, and were kicked out of US markets by the CFTC. Some editors would prefer that information not be too prominent. John Nagle (talk) 00:30, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
Please revert your deletion
Nyttend,
Please revert your removal of information in the FXCM article. The company was once the largest retail FX broker in the US. It was kicked out of the US by the US regulator the CFTC in early February for lying to their customers "fraudulent misrepresentation". Until then it was based in the US. It's not news anymore (their declared paid editor has stated as much). It's more like a death sentence - and our readers deserve to know that their existence is at best precarious. They are hanging on in the UK and probably Australia, probably trying to sell off a few pieces of the business. They don't really release much info these days. About 70% of their customers lose money each month (from self-reported US figures). In short, it's a rip-off firm that got caught. I have no legal problem saying that, because they are prohibited from denying the facts, or even casting doubt on the facts, as presented in the CFTC order.
I'm sure we've discussed my professional background before. I'd be happy to send you my (OR) financial analysis of the firm. You don't want to help these guys rip off more customers, do you?
As always,
Smallbones(smalltalk) 00:35, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
- I see User:Nagle has changed your wording. It's now fine with me. I really do suggest that you don't mess with folks like FXCM. Smallbones(smalltalk) 00:40, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
- It's the information available in the press and in SEC reports. Before they were kicked out of the US for lying to their customers, it was all essentially a self-sourced ad. Obviously the old info was questionable at best at that point. The article had been deleted twice before for not being notable. Now that they are notable, we use the best sources available. Smallbones(smalltalk) 00:46, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
- I don't quite understand "the article needs to be written from secondary sources, not primary sources like news reports". There are certainly some of the best sources of financial info in the article. Reuters, Bloomberg, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, Market Watch (also part of Dow Jones), the New York Times. Admittedly, when the stuff hit the fan in February, and FXCM essentially stopped talking to the press, there was a dearth of good secondary sources. But there are primary sources, e.g. the regulators, CFTC, reports FXCM has to file with the SEC, the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK. The regulatory reports generally have penalties for fraud or perjury involved if they are falsely filed by FXCM.
- As far as "righting great wrongs" - I see it as correcting paid editors tendency to place ads on Wikipedia. See WP:NOADS. There's no reason we should put up with ads for a ripoff broker on Wikipedia.
- Perhaps we should just agree to disagree at this point. Smallbones(smalltalk) 01:53, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I tagged Roberto de Oliveira as a hoax because I can't find any evidence that the person described on that page exists. Zootango Theatre Company G12
Hi Nyttend,
You speedily deleted Zootango Theatre Company for G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement. Before you did that, I rewrote the article and added further referenced material from a different source. I don't think it should be been speedily deleted given that. (I'm not the article creator, by the way.) Thanks. Boneymau (talk) 00:51, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying on my talk page. Close paraphrasing is not a reason for speedy delete according to my reading of G12. Boneymau (talk) 01:02, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Nyytend, follow-up in response to your second reply. I'm not sure it was close paraphrasing, which is subjective. There may have been a few strings of words left as is, but it was substantially changed. But as you are moving the goalposts and seem to have no inclination to reinstate and make deletion contestable, and it's not an high importance article, I won't pursue further. Thanks. WV Capitol Building questions
Hi Nyttend, had some health issues. Hence my absence. I was recently lucky enough to get a very nice tour of the Capitol Building in Charleston WV. SO, I have some nice pics and some more data to add. My understanding has been that statuary would be the only potential no no in a pic for updating an article. Hey Again Nyttend, so I found this article in Wikipedia....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Lincoln_Walks_at_Midnight. And ta da, the statue is shown, in front of the WV Capitol Complex. Inanimate Objects v. Governmental Entities
They are titled with the items first because the claimants appealed the decision of lower courts to the Supreme Court, and normally cases take the Appellant v. Appellee pleading format regardless of who originally filed the case. This also happens in criminal cases a lot since they get into the appellate courts because the original defendant appealed their conviction. Take Jacobson v. United States, another one from my watchlist. Jacobson couldn't charge the United States with a crime and prosecute it, after all. Daniel Case (talk) 03:23, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
County courthouse links

WV archives and the Capitol building
Hi Nyttend
I spoke with Joe Geiger, Director of archives West Virginia Division of Culture and History. He is fine with any historic image of the state capitol building I wish to use on wikipedia (WAY before 1923) from the archives, as long as I am able to do 2 things 1) keep the watermark if there is one on the picture and 2) mention them as the source along with their web link
Can you point me to someone, or show me how, in the upload wizard, what I need to indicate so that the pic I upload is not removed from the article West Virginia State Capitol???

AWB
It's an easy fix to make, certainly - and I'm not even sure I'd class it as cosmetic. Getting it incorporated into AWB I don't know about...what I might suggest is just throwing it in whenever running another AWB process. Then you go through the town proper and then you kind of jump off the GPS mapping and its there....You could then drive a few more yards and find the main road, so, technically its not so remote..However, its the only building I know of in public that has swastikas (what are calle that but are not as they are the luck symbol) all over it..UNLESS yoyu know of anther building in WV that has them as a main building edifice on its outside?Coal town guy (talk) 01:22, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- Read your reply, I totally understand where you are coming from. Maps are OK things, but I agree with you, there are "current" maps that indeed show, oh its near a road. THEN you get there. Princewick, WV, nice place to photograph, is on a road, BUT, the road is built INTO a hill. Ergo, you have to walk across people back yards to even get a pic of the church. Glad you saw the building detail. Coal town guy (talk) 14:12, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi. You recently deleted the List of taxa described from Nevada. This article contained an introduction explaining the scope and importance of the list, an entry to the list, additional information about the entry, an image, and multiple references. I think these qualities collectively add up to a valid stub. Administrator User:Anthony Appleyard felt the same way and undeleted it after a contentious user recently tagged it for speedy deletion. I was hoping you could do the same so that the list could be further expanded. Abyssal (talk) 16:35, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- Please undelete it. It seems that its author was in the process of developing it. Before I became an admin, I had nuisance of developing an article and some admin deleting it while it was in the stub stage before I could make it substantial. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 16:55, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- No. It wasn't a list: it was a one-sentence header text (not even about Nevada), and a little bit about one animal. For a "List of X" page, the list is the substantive content, and without a list, you have nothing, unless you want to move the page to a non-list normal article title and develop it thus (e.g. "Animals and plants living in Nevada") or you want to move the content to another article. Please don't put a page into mainspace until it's at least basically useful; it would be fine to have something as simple as "This is a list of taxa described from Nevada" with a bunch of bulleted links to various species, like an early version of List of counties in Nevada. Such a page provides the most basic type of information ("what species were described here?"), even if it's nowhere near comprehensive. Nyttend (talk) 22:30, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- That's what I've been doing (example), but I can't expand on it further if it's deleted. Abyssal (talk) 23:32, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- Compounding the situation is the fact that many pages like this tend to be WP:KITTENS. Clearly I misinterpreted your intentions when I figured that this was the case here. I'll happily undelete it if you're all right with it being userfied until you have a few more entries on it. Nyttend (talk) 23:40, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- I've got a few dozen entries I can add so it can go straight to main space. Abyssal (talk) 23:58, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
- And restored. Nyttend (talk) 00:00, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

David and the showbread
I saw this:
- Somewhat related to that, see the biblical passage 1 Samuel 21:6, an account of the future King David eating the consecrated showbread. I'm unaware of any specifically Jewish discussions of this subject, but given the comprehensiveness of the Talmud, it's probably addressed somewhere. Christianity's interpretation is rather firmly bound by Jesus' apparent endorsement of the incident in chapter 12 of the Gospel of Matthew. Nyttend backup (talk) 18:00, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
on RD/H. I'm a bit late to the party and the answer is complicated, but if you're interested, I can give it to you. The TLDR version is quite simple: the OT text gives David's logical explanation why the showbread is permitted to him and the looong version just explains his logic and finds it faultless, which is:
- The bread is permitted to him as they've misunderstood the law and he's in the required level of purity
- In any case if he wasn't in the correct level of purity, he could eat it because of pikuach nefesh, as the only available food
Rashi gives a small amount of help, but the main version is in Menachot 95b, which unfortunately is not yet on Wikisource. Lmk if you want a short version of the long version.
The Jesus story differs in several ways, from a traditional Jewish perspective:
- He doesn't attempt to argue that there's a legitimate reason for harvesting on the Sabbath
- He jumps straight to David's second argument, which if correct, would indeed have applied to Jesus and his followers
- He then adds a third argument which from a Jewish perspective doesn't work, that because priests in the Temple could perform certain actions normally prohibited on the Sabbath, so could they. That is not a normative Jewish argument. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 08:59, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Hello Nyttend, the copy-paste of info from the barn owl page to western barn owl by User:Pvmoutside on 06 May was not a page move, but the first step in splitting the info from common barn owl to three new species (Western, Eastern and American barn owl). The redirects such as Tyto alba to western barn owl were also part of this process. Ultimately, most of the info on the barn owl page will be split up (or duplicated) and placed on the three new species page. Then the family page (currently at Barn-owl) can be moved to its correct name (without the dash) and common barn owl made a dab page. This all may take some time and it was an intentional copy/paste of part of the page, not a "move" that will enable this to happen. As such I have reverted your edits, but want you to be aware of the larger plan (project discussion here). 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 18:44, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

- I appreciate the pointer to the WP:VPT#Cannot move page that has template-protection for its move protection discussion, however, I do not see any discussion regarding an upgrade to the edit protection. Is it possible to get the edit protection returned to the confirmed level? I am not sure what you mean by asking you in this manner? I was just disappointed in the upgrading of the edit protection as previously confirmed editors could edited the template and now it seems they cannot so I was looking for the reasoning behind such a change and I thought I would ask you as you made the change. New users register?
Hi Nyttend. Is there a place where one can look up what new user names have been registered in the past few days and what areas/ pages the new users are editing? I am tracking two users who, one who routinely ditches the name whenever he feels that he is running into too much resistance over his posts; the other for the same reason, thought the term "routinely" would not apply, he has done so only once. However, neither has edited for a while, and they are normally very active, so I suspect they might have resurfaced under new names. The article was created by a sock who belongs to promotional paid editing sockfarm of probably more than 1,000 socks and we are currently discussing how the LTA will be created. That's why having these articles deleted is really non-controversial. Capitals00 (talk) 14:03, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Belated thanks
Hey - just wanted to say thanks for helping me out last month, when I was caught in a block effecting a nearby public library. And sorry that I never responded until now! The last few months have had their share of distractions.
This was the conversation, just in case you don't remember - Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2017 August 3#Unable to edit at public library, because the IP is believed to be a "web host provider". What does this mean, and is there a solution?. The IP address for the library is User:159.203.61.230. I'm not sure how these things are typically handled, but someone might want to look into removing the block, so that other editors are able to use Wikipedia, while in the library.
Again, thanks for the help! --Jpcase (talk) 20:35, 23 September 2017 (UTC)
