From the editors

Welcome to the August 2014 edition of the Bugle!

We're pleased to present a packed 101st edition of the Bugle. The centrepiece is two articles marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War I: an interview with five editors who are highly experienced in writing articles on the war, and a thought-provoking op-ed from TomStar81 discussing the anniversary. The usual article news feature has a nautical theme this month (as well as an even better way of presenting the new featured pictures courtesy of Adam Cuerden), and the book reviews section includes a wrap-up of some recent reviews published in newspapers and history-focused websites.

The coordinators of the Military history project would like to remind all editors for the project that September is an election month for the project's coordinators. As we move closer to September more information will be made available for those wishing to run for a position as a project coordinator, but for now we would like to remind the project members of the election and invite anyone interested in being a coordinator to read up on the position and its responsibilities. As always, if you have any question about the position or its responsibilities you are welcome to ask questions of the coordinators and we will be happy to answer them as best we can. There are also a pair of academy essays related to the position if you would like learn more about the role.

We hope that you enjoy this edition. As always, we continue to be on the look out for op-eds and book reviews, and anyone with something to be published is warmly encouraged to post their submission at the Newsroom, or to contact Ian or Nick directly.

Your editors, Ian Rose (talk) and Nick-D (talk)

Help needed

Are you looking to help out a bit more and not sure where to start? The project is always looking for more editors to review our GA or A Class nominated articles. Currently there are 45 articles within the scope of this project awaiting a GA review, and 12 articles an A class review. Whether you are an old hand or relatively new, anyone can contribute. If you are just starting out consider reading the GA Instructions or our A-Class FAQ if you want to learn a bit more about reviewing before giving it a shot.

Backlog reduction drive

A new backlog reduction drive will begin on 1 September. This purpose of this drive is to reduce the backlog of articles within the project's scope which have been tagged as needing particular improvements or which have an incomplete B-class checklist. The drive will run until 15 October, and participants will receive awards in recognition of their efforts (aside from the fun of fixing up these articles!). Further information on the drive is available here.
