Human History Collections

The Royal BC Museum is committed to a collaborative approach to the care and management of Indigenous cultural collections based on the recommendations of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as well as protecting individuals’ personal information in accordance with requirements of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996, c. 165). This includes taking appropriate steps to restrict access to, and prevent the unauthorized disclosure of personal information about identifiable individuals, including:

• culturally sensitive materials;
• religious or political beliefs or associations;
• sexual orientation;
• employment, occupational or educational history;
• information that has been supplied in confidence;
• information that could reasonably be expected to threaten anyone’s safety or mental health or physical health; or
• information that is likely to be inaccurate or unreliable.

Additionally, records may be restricted in accordance with donor restrictions or the federal Copyright Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. C-42). Government and court records often contain information that is protected from release by FOIPPA and by other acts such as the Youth Criminal Justice Act (SC 2002, c. 1) and the BC Adoption Act (RSBC 1996, c. 5) For more information, please see the Access Restrictions webpage.
