Theater counts: Joker repels an onslaught of newcomers to remain widest release

The opening weekend turned out to be less inspiring than originally expected for Joker: Folie á Deux, as Monday final tallies reported the film making $2.3 million less than originally projected over its opening three-day frame. Despite those projections, the sequel nevertheless easily dominated the domestic box office, securing nearly $38 million from 4,105 locations, which it retains for its second weekend. As the film begins its sophomore session, it will have to fend off a flurry of new wide releases, including another sequel poised to make Joker a one and done at the top of charts.

Weekend projections: Folie à Deux limping towards $40-million opening

After Megalopolis’ creative swing and miss last weekend, Joker: Folie à Deux continues the trend this weekend, with filmgoers not finding the musical anti-hero movie to their liking. Warner Bros. is projecting the film will make $40 million by close of business today, well less than half of what the studio would have hoped for when they greenlit the project. The Wild Robot will finish second, while White Bird also disappoints on its much-delayed debut.

Warner Bros.’s bet on Joker back in 2019 was a rare case of a studio supporting a bold take on an existing character, and their gamble paid off handsomely, with the japed crusader landing $96.2 million on opening weekend, and going on to score $335.4 million domestically and a breathtaking $1 billion dollars plus worldwide. A sequel was inevitable, and for a time the new movie looked as though it might post similar numbers to its predecessor (at least in North America). Tracking has been disappointing over the past few weeks, though, and reviews are mixed. Now we have preview numbers from last night, our model still thinks it will top $50 million on debut, but it might not get much further.

It was a solid weekend for newcomer The Wild Robot at the domestic box office as the film outperformed most expectations, dispatching all competitors and locking up the top spot on the weekend chart. The animated feature tallied up just shy of $36 million in its first three days and currently enjoys a six-day cume of $43 million. The robot film will likely fall into second place this weekend as a trio of wide releases invades cinemas, including the highly anticipated Joker: Folie á Deux.
