Thyroid Blood Test
The Thyroid Blood Test is an essential tool for monitoring thyroid function and hormone balance in adults over the age of 18. It keeps an eye on hormonal balance and proactively identifies any potential anomalies to allow for timely treatment. It helps people understand how their bodies function and maintains metabolic regulation, both of which enhance overall health outcomes.

Experts Opinion on Thyroid Blood Tests
"Thyroid function tests look at three hormone levels. In normal states, the pituitary gland in the brain releases thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), stimulating the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4.
This thyroid function test can help you understand if your thyroid function is normal, overactive, or underactive."

Frequently Asked Questions
The normal range for thyroid blood test results can vary slightly from laboratory to laboratory. However, in general, the normal range is:
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): 0.4 to 4.0 mIU/L
- Free thyroxine (T4): 0.8 to 1.8 ng/dL
- Free triiodothyronine (T3): 2.3 to 4.2 pg/mL
If your results fall outside of the normal range, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have a thyroid disorder. However, it's important to follow up with your doctor to discuss your results and whether you need further testing.
There are a few different situations in which your doctor may recommend a thyroid blood test. These include:
- If you have symptoms of a thyroid disorder
- If you have risk factors for a thyroid disorder
- If you're taking medication that can affect the thyroid gland
Sudden fluctuations in weight or chronic fatigue may be signs of a potential thyroid problem. Additional symptoms include brittle hair, dry skin, mood fluctuations including anxiety and sadness, and heightened susceptibility to cold. Other symptoms may include constipation issues or unusually light or heavy menstrual cycles. Moreover, symptoms of a thyroid issue may include "brain fog," or trouble focussing, excessive sweating that cannot be explained, and cholesterol levels that do not decrease with diet or exercise.
You will receive a free return label for sending your health test samples back to our lab for analysis. We will also provide clear instructions via email with return information for your sample.
If there are requirements for fasting or limited alcohol intake before a blood test, then we will send personalised instructions to you via email once an order has been placed. However, the majority of tests can be taken without fasting.
Results are usually processed within 2 – 3 working days. If a sample is sent over the weekend (which we do not recommend), you will receive your results within 2 – 3 days from Monday. Once your results and personalised report is ready to view, you will receive a notification via email to log in to the Welzo online platform.
There are a few things that can affect the results of your thyroid blood test. These include:
- Taking certain medications: Some medications, such as birth control pills and certain heart medications, can affect thyroid hormone levels. Be sure to tell your doctor about any medications you're taking before your blood test.
- Having other medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as liver disease or kidney disease, can affect thyroid hormone levels.
- Being pregnant: Pregnancy can also affect thyroid hormone levels. If you're pregnant, be sure to tell your doctor before your blood test.
There are several groups of people who are more at risk of developing thyroid issues than others. These include:
- Women: Women are much more likely than men to develop thyroid problems, especially after pregnancy or during menopause.
- People with family history: If you have a family member with thyroid disease, you're more likely to develop it yourself.
- People with other medical conditions: People with diabetes, heart disease, or goitres (enlarged thyroid glands) are more likely to develop thyroid problems.
TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, regulates the production of T3 and T4 hormones, which are essential for maintaining a balanced metabolism
If your results are outside the normal range and are of concern, it is a priority that you contact your local GP or emergency service by calling 111 or 999. Please note: If you feel sick, unwell or are concerned about your health, it is your responsibility to get in touch with the emergency services as soon as possible, do not wait for results to be issued.
