This church was originally designed as a synagogue by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler. Kehilath Anshe Maariv (KAM) was the first Jewish congregation in Chicago when it was organized in 1847. Its sanctuary was from 1891 to the early 1920s. The Hebrew inscription is still visible above the doorway.
The Pilgrim Baptist Church, which moved into the building after KAM relocated to Hyde Park, is credited as being the birthplace of gospel music. Thomas A. Dorsey and Mahalia Jackson are among the many greats who performed here.
It was mostly destroyed by fire in January 2006.
