British general Dwyer and his men stood at the entrance and showered bullets on the unarmed crowd without any prior warning. The mayhem continued till the last bullet had been fired, killing more than 2,000. The alarmed people jumped into a well to save their lives which caused more than 300 deaths. This brutal massacre shocked the entire world which condemned the act. The Bengali poet Rabindranath renounced his British conferred knighthood in protest. To honour the martyrs, a red sandstone memorial was erected here. The well is also another object of curiosity. It is 2 furlong away from the Golden Temple
