Established in 1980, the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge preserves one of the largest privately owned tracts of bottomland hardwoods remaining in the Mississippi Delta. It contains a diversity of plant and animal species with over 400 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The refuge spans nearly 80,000 acres of forests, bayous and lakes once characteristic of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley.
