Poverty Point is a late Archaic era site built by an advanced society of hunter gatherers between 1650 and 700 BC. It is the second oldest known mound site in North America. The oldest Being Watson Brake which is also in Northern Louisiana. The Poverty Point site is owned by the state of Louisiana and is managed by the Office of State Parks as the Poverty Point State Historic Site. It is open to the public seven days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A visitor center, museum, and an archaeological research laboratory are located on the grounds
