city, place with historical importance, county town - UK/Ireland
Bristol is the largest city in south western England. Until the mid C18th it was the largest city in the country outside of London but the rise of industrial cities such as Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester led to it being overtaken. The city remains one of the richest in England and Wales outside of London.
It is the sixth largest city in England, and the ninth largest in the UK with a population of around 550,000, with the ''Greater Bristol'' (i.e the now defunct county of Avon) area with just over 1 million people. Its Welsh translation is Bryste.
It is home to numerous colleges, including technical colleges, Bristol University and the University of the West of England.
