How to Apply

Prospective graduate students should apply through the Graduate College at the University of Illinois.

The web-based application system allows you to track your admission progress and conduct most of the admission process electronically.  Choose the"Bioengineering-MS-BIC” degree option when applying for this program.

Applications to the MS in BIC program are accepted on a rolling basis, but we only admit during the Fall term.

Application Checklist

  • Official transcripts. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded into the application form, but formal transcripts will be required once admitted.
  • 3 letters of recommendation.  Must be on a letterhead and signed by the recommender.
  • Resume/CV (not exceeding two pages).
  • Two- to three-page essay. This is an important component of your application and provides the admissions committee with information about your written communication skills and insight into how you work, think and act.

    Please addresses the following:
    1. Your interest in the BIC program.
    2. Your background and experiences related to biomedical imaging, computing, and machine learning.
    3. A statement of your career goals and a description of how the BIC program will advance them.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE – optional).
  • Funding documentation and English proficiency requirements (international applicants only).  International students applying to the M.S. in BIC program must provide Evidence of Financial Resources.  Also for applicants whose degree is not from an institution where English is the official language, TOEFL or IELTS test results are also required.

Applicants with scores lower than the minimum noted for TOEFL or IELTS may still be admitted, but they will be required to take an English as a Second Language Placement Test (EPT) upon arrival at the University. Based on the results, applicants are generally required to enroll in a non-credit “English as a Second Language” course.   For additional information, visit the “English Proficiency Requirement for Admission” page.
