We have started a Patreon page with the hopes that
some of our followers would be
willing to donate a small amount to keep DVDBeaver
alive. We are a tiny niche, so your
generosity is vital to our
existence.
We are talking about a minimum of
$0.10 - $0.15 a day, perhaps a
quarter (or more) to those who won't
miss it from their budget. It
equates to buying DVDBeaver a coffee
once, twice or a few times a month.
You can then participate in our
monthly
Silent
auctions,
and have exclusive access to many 'bonus' High Resolution screen captures - both
4K UHD
and
Blu-ray
(see
HERE). |

"We didn't need dialogue.... we had faces." - Norma Desmond
With all the valued attributes of owning a Blu-ray system - nothing compares to turning down the light and using it as a time-machine, before the birth of your parents, and transforming your Home Theater into an entertainment venue of a century ago. The pre-sound era produced some of the most visually impacting and unforgettable films ever made. Silent films are, justly, considered the 'primordial soup' of cinema. There are few techniques today that have not already been experimented by the true pioneers of this medium 100 years ago. Less than 10% of silent films still exist today in their complete form and even the ones that survive in fragments of footage or simply still photographs continue to ignite our curiosity and imagination. Silent Era films open a window on a different world from our current existence - the fashions, architecture, transportation, lifestyles, customs, culture, artistry, relationships and personalities are immensely fascinating in how they contrast our modern lives. The archiving of our history is a vital element in appreciating the films that we love today. The Silent film treasures - that are painstakingly restored - demand and receive our utmost respect and admiration. The higher resolution of Blu-ray brings the viewing experience, drenched in heavy film grain, to zenith levels - generously offering the most authentic presentations - outside of the unlikely circumstance of owning a restored print.
Companies like Flicker Alley, Criterion, Masters of Cinema, Kino Lorber, BFI, Olive Films, Artificial Eye, Gaumont, Carlotta and many more, are our heroes for producing essential Blu-ray packages of Silent Era films. We encourage them to continue and for film fans to support them. We've listed them all below and will update as necessary (Thanks to Gregory!). What an incredibly fortunate time to be a cinephile. |
