Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 6, 1898.

The arms first appear on the local seal of the city in 1653, but a colour image already is known from a roll fo arms from 1610. When the arms were officially granted is no longer known, in 1898 they were confirmed and regranted.

The arms probably date from the 16^th century and show the arms of Austria combined with the cross of the Hohenstaufen family, rulers of the area in the 13^th century when Imst was founded.
