Washington Nationals Minority Owner Paxton Baker Breaks Down How Tech Is Reshaping Baseball

There are clubs that no amount of charm or charisma can get you into. The kind where wealth isn’t enough if it isn’t old, where opportunity depends not on merit but on access, and where the real decisions are made behind velvet ropes and closed boardroom doors. For far too long, the world of professional sports ownership has been one of those clubs. This is where Jaia Thomas and Diverse Representation enter the chat. What started as a digital directory for Black agents and publicists has evolved into a movement to radically shift the face of power in sports and entertainment. Through events like the recent Black Ownership in Sports Symposium in Atlanta, GA, Founder and CEO Thomas is not just asking for a seat at the table. She’s building new tables altogether. The symposium brings together current and aspiring Black owners, investors, and leaders to discuss tangible pathways into one of the most exclusive spaces in business. Paxton Baker was one of the speakers at this year’s...

Aisha Bowe Says She's 'The Aerospace Engineer That Almost Failed High School' But She's Also The First Bahamian To Make It To Space

Aisha Bowe nearly failed high school but she never allowed her dreams to escape her, leading her into space. Choosing Her Own Path In high school, a guidance counselor suggested that Bowe, a first-generation Bahamian-American, consider a career in cosmetology, since school had not been her strong suit at the time. However, it was through her father — who passed away in 2025 — that she found encouragement to pursue mathematics and reject the limited path the counselor had envisioned for her. On the “Black Tech Green Money” podcast hosted by AFROTECH™ Brand Manager Will Lucas, Bowe acknowledges that the counselor’s restrictive views made her feel “demoralized,” so she chose not to apply to a four-year university and instead enrolled in a community college. Following a reality check, Bowe decided she wanted to become a NASA rocket scientist, a dream first envisioned by her father, who had initially moved to the United States to pursue this goal, notes Travel Noire. “I wanted to do...

Barack Obama Says AI Can Code Better Than 60% To 70% Of Human Coders

Former President Barack Obama says artificial intelligence (AI) can code better than the majority of human coders. At a time when AI is present across various industries , the technology certainly has its pros and cons. And it will be even more important not to get left out of the conversation, which is why supporters like Kevin Hart are helping to ensure the technology is accessible to Black founders through his $10k grant program , as AFROTECH™ previously told you. “The train is coming and coming fast,” Hart told Fortune. “Either you’re on it, or if not, get out of the way.” Barack Obama recently had the chance himself to weigh in on the discourse around AI’s influence as part of the Sacerdote Great Names Series at Hamilton College held on Thursday, April 3, in Clinton, N.Y. Consumer Boycott Against Target Extended Despite The Retailer Saying It Will Fulfill $2B Commitment To Black-Owned Businesses

The consumer boycott against Target will continue, according to Rev. Jamal Bryant. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, Target’s retraction of its three-year diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments — which included ending a program designed to highlight Black and minority-owned businesses — impacted the company. Shareholders filed a lawsuit and Rev. Bryant led a 40-day consumer boycott, garnering over 200,000 sign-ups. The major retailer subsequently experienced a decline in its stock for at least eight consecutive weeks. “When we started this Target fast, … a Fortune 500 company was trading on the New York Stock Exchange at $138 a share. Because of how it is, that stridently you have put your hand to the plow, their stock started at $138 a share. As of Friday, it is down to $94 a share,” Bryant said Sunday, April 20, at his church, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, GA, reports The Christian Post. Furthermore, Target’s foot traffic decreased year over year...

Op-Ed: Target CEO Meets With Al Sharpton To Discuss DEI Rollback, But Should He Still Be Speaking For Us?

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. Often, those who rank in seniority get to speak for the broader community. How long does that work though, and how long should it last? It’s a question that comes up whenever someone of a previous generation is asked to speak or is seen as a representative during a current crisis a community is facing. AFROTECH™ previously reported that after Target rolled back its commitments to DEI, the retail store has seen a decline in foot traffic for the past 10 weeks. Target was one of the brands that, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in 2020, put a lot of time and money towards pushing for racial justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion across the board. After the decline, The New York Post reported that Target CEO Brian Cornell met with Reverend Al Sharpton about its DEI policies, but should Sharpton be the one speaking for us? Sharpton came to prominence during the 1970s with his focus on...

Op-Ed: Why Rebuilding American Manufacturing Could Rebuild The Black Middle Class

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. The turmoil over tariffs has taken center stage since President Donald Trump has started to make good on his campaign promise to Make America Great Again. His latest move is leveraging the tactic of tariffs to help bring back manufacturing jobs that he believes have been outsourced to other countries and should be available to people in the United States. However, having the goal of quickly bringing industrialization to a country has been tried elsewhere before. Mao Zedong of China, who formed the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and ran it until his death in 1976, tried what Trump is doing in the U.S. in China. It was called The Great Leap Forward and started in 1958. It aimed to change China from a country that relied on agriculture as its economic center to one that relied on industrialization instead. Similar to Donald Trump’s vision for industrialization, it included a focus on increasing...
