Biography
Almost all movie lovers are familiar with Jeffrey Rush, because in the filmography of this actor there are more than fifty roles. The Australian starred in Pirates of the Caribbean, Legend of the Night Guards, The Book Thief, The King's Speech, The Gods of Egypt and other notable films. In Jeffrey's arsenal there are many honorary film awards: Golden Globe, Oscar, Tonny, Emmy, BAFTA, etc.
fact
Childhood and youth
The actor was born on June 6, 1951 in sunny Australia in the picturesque town of Toowoomba, Queensland. This area is famous for its green space and nature reserves.
Jeffrey grew up in an average family. Although Rush had an unbridled creativity since childhood, his parents were not artistic and close to art people: the boy's father, Roy, worked in the accounting department of the Royal Australian Air Force, and Merelin's mother was a salesman at a local department store. It is noteworthy that the actor's nationality determines the mixing of several bloods: German, English, Irish and Scottish.
Unfortunately or fortunately, the Rashay family idyll collapsed, and the parents of the future actor decided to divorce. The five-year-old boy stayed with his mother. Soon, Merelin and Jeffrey moved to Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. There the future actor lived in the house of his grandparents. When the young man turned 16, a stepfather appeared in the family.
It is not surprising that young Rush was a regular in the drama club. Moreover, the guys with pleasure put on the school stage "non-childish" black comedies, in which humor was endowed with an admixture of cynicism and seasoned with sarcasm. For example, one of the comedies played by schoolchildren is Arsenic and Old Lace, based on a play by Joseph Kesselring (1939). The plot of the theatrical production, it would seem, tells about the ordinary life of the critic and opponent of marriage, Mortimer Brewster, who nevertheless decides to marry the beautiful Elaine. But the plan was not destined to come true, as strange circumstances occur in the house of his aunts: for example, in one of the chests Mortimer found the corpse of a gentleman. Later, Jeffrey admitted in an interview that he really liked to participate in plays with a "double bottom".
After school, Rush had no doubts that his life would be connected with creativity. Therefore, the young man entered the oldest University of Queensland, where he learned the basics of art. After graduation, the 19-year-old boy was accepted into the Australian Theater Company. The young Rush had to rent an apartment, and his neighbor was Mel Gibson himself (later friends played on the same stage in the play "Waiting for Godot").
fact
Theater
In 1975, Jeffrey decided to improve his acting skills and went to France, where for two years he studied the complex art of expressing his emotions through body plastics without the use of words - pantomime. His teacher was the legendary mime Jacques Lecoq.
In 1977, Jeffrey returned to his homeland and continued his theatrical career. It is noteworthy that during the years of his "creative formation" Rush showed that he can play both in light farces and in heavy psychological dramas. On the stage of the theater, he managed to take part in the plays of Shakespeare (King Lear), Chekhov (Uncle Vanya), Oscar Wilde (The Importance of Being Earnest), etc.
For the lead role in the play based on Gogol's story "The Diary of a Madman", Geoffrey Rush has won many awards. With this performance in 1989, the artist toured Russia. At the Moscow Taganka Theater, the Australian guests received loud applause from our compatriots. According to Geoffrey, Gogol's plays were presented with elements of burlesque, which was an innovation for the Russian audience, who was used to restrained performances.

Movies
Geoffrey's confession that he was in the theater more for the soul is quite logical. Voltaire said that "The theater teaches how a thick book cannot do it." Therefore, future film actors often began their creative biography on stage, working live in front of the audience.
The first work of Geoffrey Rush in front of the director's cameras was Claude Wazham's crime film "Fooling" (1981). The second appearance on the stage took place in 1982 - Rush took part in the musical "Star Fever" directed by Gilliana Armstrong.
Fleeting roles did not bring popularity to the actor, and the films themselves were not widely known to avid film fans. Therefore, after his debut, Jeffrey continued his theatrical activities.
In 1996, Rush received the title role in the biopic "Glitter" directed by Scott Hicks. The film tells the story of the famous pianist David Halfgott, who has followed a thorny path to success. Jeffrey conveyed the multifaceted emotions of the musician, who, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, worked tirelessly to gain recognition. For this role, the Austrian received two major film awards: Oscar and Golden Globe. Thanks to the film "Shine" Jeffrey opened the road to cinema.
If you list all of Rush's works worthy of attention, then the book is not enough. This man has shown himself to be an actor who can play any role. For example, in the drama "The Pen of the Marquis de Sade" (2000), Geoffrey appeared before moviegoers in the role of a ladies' man and a libertine - Monsieur Donacien Francois de Sade. And in the film "Frida" (2002), the actor was transformed into a revolutionary leader - Leon Trotsky.
Rush has starred in both the chilling horror "House of the Haunted Night" (1999), and the superhero movie "Green Lantern" (2011), created in the best traditions of DC.
In 2013, Rush starred in Giuseppe Tornatore's melodrama "Best Offer", where he played the main role of the elderly art collector Virgil Oldman.
For the film "The King's Speech!" (2010) directed by Tom Hooper, the actor was nominated for Best Actor. The plot of the picture is simple and non-trivial: the future king of Great Britain (Colin Firth) suffers from a nervous stutter. The duke cannot even communicate with ordinary people, so there was no question of public speaking. But speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) helps the heir to the throne not only with speech defects, but also with inner doubts.
It is interesting that the creators of the picture for a long time could not contact the agents of Geoffrey Rush. Therefore, desperate producers, "bypassing the protocol", sent a letter with an invitation to the role of the actor personally. Rush found the lone brown envelope under the rug early in the morning.
Jeffrey is also familiar to fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series directed by Gore Verbinski. There, a tall actor, 183 cm tall, played the significant role of the pirate Hector Barbarossa.
At the beginning of the adventure film, Barbarossa appears before the audience as an antagonist: Hector rebelled against Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in order to conquer the treasure. But over time, as often happens, in the rest of the franchise, the negative character became positive and helped Sparrow in the fight against Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and other enemies who stood on the ways of a charismatic pirate.
In the fourth part, Barbarossa appears before the audience without one leg: he had to get rid of it in order to save his life.
Among other things, Jeffrey tried himself as a screenwriter, producer and dubbing actor. Also in some biopic videos, Rush plays himself.
fact
Personal life
Geoffrey Rush is a monogamous person. The Austrian met his future wife (actress Jane Menelos) on the stage of the theater. The lovers tied the knot in 1988. Geoffrey and Jane can be seen together in The Quill of the Marquis de Sade.
The actors are raising two children: son James and daughter Angelica. Due to a busy schedule and constant filming in the UK, then in the USA, Rush does not have enough time to spend his leisure time with his family. Jeffrey wants to break away from work and spend the weekend with family and friends.
In an interview, the man admitted that he is proud of his independence from social networks: he does not post photos on Instagram, and you will not meet Rush on Facebook. A man prefers live communication to a virtual one. As the actor said, he is not a fan of technology, and if you choose between an electronic tablet and a paper book, he will prefer the latter.
fact
Geoffrey Rush now
In 2017, Geoffrey Rush continues to delight moviegoers with his professional acting. In the series "Genius" the Austrian reincarnated as one of the most controversial figures in the world of natural sciences - Einstein.
The multi-part film is full of interesting facts about Albert and tells about the life of the inventor of the theory of relativity.
Also in 2017, fans of sea adventures saw a new part of "Pirates of the Caribbean", where the permanent actor played Barbarossa. Jeffrey also took part in the film "The Last Portrait", which is preparing for the premiere.
