'The Wild Robot' review: Who knew a robot and goose could make me sob so much?

Mashable

The trailer for The Wild Robot has reduced me to tears every time I've seen it. The idea of a robot finding community in the wilderness was just too much for my heart to handle, even in a three-minute package. It's great news, then, that The Wild Robot delivers on its trailer's promise a thousandfold. Director Chris Sanders, known for Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, has crafted a sweet (and yes, tear-jerking) tale of motherhood and connection, all backed up with some of DreamWorks' most stunning animation to date. Based on the novel by Peter Brown, The Wild Robot strands us on a deserted island alongside ROZZUM unit 7134 (voiced by Lupita Nyong'o).

OpenAI staffers reportedly 'taken aback' by 'ominous' logo rebranding

Engadget

OpenAI could undergo massive changes next year, which include getting a brand new logo. According to Fortune, though, staff members were less than enthused when they got a sneak peek of its supposed new logo at a recent company-wide meeting. The company's hexagonal flower symbol, which has become pretty recognizable thanks to ChatGPT's popularity, is gone. Instead, it's replaced by a large black "O" or a simple ring or circle that staffers reportedly found to be devoid of creativity -- ominous, even. Based on how the publication's sources described it, the new logo sounds like the complete opposite of OpenAI's current one, which was designed to represent "precision, potential and optimism."

Watch: Huge explosion at Russian arms depot

BBC News

Footage shot from the road shows a huge explosion at an arms depot near Tikhoretsk in Russia. Ukraine said munitions from North Korea had been among those it was targeting. The governor of the Krasnodar region confirmed it came under Ukrainian drone attack on Friday night. He said debris from a drone had sparked a fire, which "spread to explosive objects" and caused detonations. Residents nearby had been evacuated, and nobody was reported injured.

Meta Connect 2024: The cheaper Quest 3S, AI, smart glasses and everything else to expect

Engadget

It used to go by at least two different names -- Oculus Connect and then Facebook Connect -- but whatever the moniker, Meta's fall event is still a big showcase for the company's latest and greatest achievements in the virtual reality and mixed reality space. Much like last year, we can likely predict the biggest news coming out of Meta Connect 2024 with just two acronyms: AI and AR. Like every other big tech firm this year, Meta will be desperate to demonstrate how it plans to stay relevant in a future powered by AI. And now that we're seven months beyond the launch of Apple's Vision Pro, which arrived alongside a short-lived spike in interest in augmented reality (AR), Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is likely eager to show off his own plans to make AR a reality. While Zuckerberg isn't as hot on the metaverse as he was when he renamed his company, the union of AI and AR is one way he can still make the dream of persistent virtual worlds come true.

How Apple, Google, and Microsoft can save us from AI deepfakes

ZDNet

The rise of AI-generated content has brought both innovation and concern to the forefront of the digital media landscape. Hyper-realistic images, videos, and voice recordings -- once the work of expert designers and engineers -- can now be created by anyone with access to tools like DALL-E, Midjourney, and Sora. These technologies have democratized content creation, enabling artists, marketers, and hobbyists to push creative boundaries. However, with this accessibility comes a darker side -- disinformation, identity theft, and fraud. Malicious actors can use these tools to impersonate public figures, spread fake news, or manipulate the public for political or financial gain.

Central Valley effort aims to train farmworkers to master the technology replacing fieldwork

Los Angeles Times

Angel Cortez was ready for a change. Cortez, 43, is a Mexican immigrant who has worked in agriculture, landscaping and restaurants since he arrived in California more than 25 years ago. But he said a workplace injury nearly a decade ago has made physical labor -- jobs requiring him to stand or walk for long periods -- exceedingly painful. He has been looking to transition into jobs he could do primarily while seated. But his options felt limited: He has a high school education from Mexico, but doesn't speak English fluently and wasn't comfortable using a computer.

Could AI save Nigerians from devastating floods?

Al Jazeera

In the small village of Ogba-Ojibo in central Nigeria, sitting at the confluence of two of the nation's largest rivers – the Niger and Benue – 27-year-old Ako Prince Omali is counting the steps carved out of the dirt, which lead down the loam-coloured banks of the river Niger. This river bank, dotted with tufts of spiky grass, is where villagers come to fish or wash produce and laundry. Just last week, three of the steps were submerged during one night of rain, which raised the water level by about five metres. Normally, you can count seven steps down into the river. Now, only four remain above the surface of the water, the sticks bracing the muddy steps having washed away in the deluge.

Live episode: will AI make a good companion? – podcast

The Guardian

In a special episode recorded live at the British Science Festival, Madeleine Finlay and guests explore the question: will AI make a good companion? AI could give us new ways to tackle difficult problems, from young people's mental health issues to isolation in care homes. It also raises challenging questions about the increasing role of tech in our personal lives. To explore these questions, Madeleine is joined by the Guardian's science editor, Ian Sample; Tony Prescott, a professor of computational robotics at Sheffield University; and Dr Mhairi Aitken, an ethics fellow at the Alan Turing Institute and visiting senior lecturer at Queen Mary University of London.

'The Remarkable Life of Ibelin' review: A remarkable doc about a 'World of Warcraft' player's inner life

Mashable

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin blends traditional documentary techniques with World of Warcraft recreations to paint a touching portrait of the online life of a Norwegian gamer. The film, directed by Benjamin Ree, centers on 25-year-old Mats Steen, who died in 2014 from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. His parents, Robert and Trude, initially have a fairly bleak view of Mats' life. It seems to them that Mats was not social and spent most of his time gaming, so Robert and Trude worry he hadn't made any meaningful connections. However, after they announce Mats' passing on his old blog, they receive an outpouring of support that reveals Mats led a rich, love-filled life in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft, where he played a character named Ibelin Redmoore.
