Drifters is a splendid display of violence, as expected from the author of Hellsing. It also faithfully portrays his very distinct, very striking art style and brings it to life quite well.
The entertainingly weird characters won't be for everyone and the strategies on display aren't as smart as the show would like you to think, but the larger mystery of the plot is intriguing and it's just one hell of an entertaining ride.

Shimazu Toyohisa, while involved in the Battle of Sekigahara, manages to mortally wound Ii Naomasa, but is critically wounded in the process. As he walks from the field wounded and bleeding, Toyohisa finds himself transported to a corridor of doors where a bespectacled man at a desk waits for him. This man, Murasaki, sends Toyohisa into the nearest door where he wakes up in another world. There, Toyohisa meets other great warriors like him who have been transported as well, to be part of a group known as Drifters.
This world contains both native humans and a number of fantastical races, including elves, dwarves, and hobbits. Major figures from all through history (both good and bad) are transported to another world when they die and they end up doing things very similar to what we they did in our world. The bad people have decided to annihilate humans by siding with the monsters and the good people are trying to save the humans.
Pretty straight forward story but what made it interesting was the execution. Most of the good people have learned from their mistakes and are trying to be better versions in this new world. So there is character development and a lot of humour to allow us to quickly understand why they are doing something the way they are doing. A lot of tactics, strategy, idiosyncracies, kindness and bravery of each person was probably the highlight of this show.
Feels like an 8.5 anime. The author is an history nut and patriotic jap, so there are innuendos that 75% of the audience will not fully understand, and this might be the reason for its lower than expected rating.

Hugely entertaining with a willdly varying art style allong with character depictions, moves from serious gorefest to completely flippant and from completely camp to deadly serious in an instant...and back again. Been ages since I've seen anything as good as this. There's some depth to it as well with some serious military strategy buried in amongst the general plot. Also, in amongst the madness, doesn't lose the point that war is hell and people is wondrous strange & complex. Hope season 2 can attain the same quality and, like others, can't wait.
