Yup. Another. Fuckin. One. I tell you I am tired of this shit, yet, somehow, I feel kinda safe watching the same show over and over. You see, most other shows are just crap tales about high school, about lame romances, or some comedy trying to be mature but only simply sucking the blood of old jokes or excessive cheap dialogue. This formula of putting the boring light novel lead in another world at least makes me comfortable with the fact it doesn't happen in a fuckin school. The worlds may be similar, or even a damn copy of one another, but they have a deal of fantasy that puts them out of the modern Japan and moving slightly away from its obsession in trying to make annoying teenagers feel good about their pity selves (at least inside school life and daily shitty routine).

Anyway, Isekai wa Smartphoe to Tomo ni. (yes, a period is part of the name because this is a fuckn light novel adaptation, thus must have a lame title) is called as Isesuma for short and is about yet another guy who dies in our world and is thrown into another. The twist this time is that god killed young Touya by accident and as an apology allows him to be transferred to another world and keep one of his possessions. Touya, being a typical japanese teen, decides to keep his smartphone, as long as it is magically fueled to work forever.

  1. You know it
Touya not only keeps his smartphone though. When god throws him in this fantasy world filled with cute lolis and legal polygamy, he also gives the boy immense magical aptitude and the uniqueness of being able to wield every personal magic there is. To makes thing easier, he only needs to know the name and the basic idea of a spell to copy it. Yeah. The guy is basically god and his smartphone is just a cheap add-on compared to the power-up god gave him.

    He's not a dick though
Touya may not be as annoying as his protagonist-novel-brigade because he is, at least, a good guy. He is not inherently pervert, he helps everyone, and he was never portrayed as the anti-social freak with zero social skills. He is, however, an overpowered piece of shit, making every effort in this new world a simple matter of learning a new spell and beating the crap out of any foe in front of him.

Being an overpowered Samaritan also makes Touya the natural concept of the girl-magnet lead. Every random guy or person he helps ends up presenting him to a new cute loli, whom he promptly aids and treat with sweet talk, making them fall for him in a second. Of course, he is still a shy boy who can't see pantsu, but god damn, not being a Kirito-level-dick is already a major positive in his lame and boring personality.

And he hoards everything he can
What would you do in a world where you are overpowered, have the knowledge of world in the palms of your hand, and where you can marry multiple women for as long as they are twelve years or older? Well, build a loli harem of course. It happens Touya thinks the same and thus becomes engaged with a lot of underage girls as he saves dukes, kings, and warlords. He does all that with no effort, just being the light novel lead we all know.

    It had potential though
Well, it could be more, certainly. The title of the show has "smartphone" in it and before watching it, I was expecting a regular boy using the infinite knowledge of internet in an early-developed world. He could basically access youtube tutorials to build ikea products, or perhaps study how to harness electricity, introduce physics theories to this new world, maybe even build an airplane or provide the sketches of a piece of computer hardware. He had the collective information of modern day mankind at the palm of his hand (which we all have, I know) and was the only one in the world with that. He could make a lot of money, fame, and get the lolis too. Yet, somehow, the only use he has of is smartphone is the GPS and looking up at how to make ice cream. Everything else he acquires because he is a chosen of god with unlimited arcane power.

    It's a bit common too
Production Reed is a little known studio and their lack of budget and experience is evident during Isesuma. Touya is your average guy in all regards and even the girls are basically the deres templates with very little new offerings. There is a lack of sharpness, consistency, and color to the show, making the overall experience even more generic than most other similar shows. Animation and sound also suffer from the mediocre quality, which is only helped by giving cute smiles and angry faces to the tsunderes during conversations, as well as giving a boost to bouncing boobs, which is indeed useful for a harem show.

Isesuma could be something more. It had the tools to make a mixture of modern day technology with medieval fantasy, much like how GATE tried a few years back. I was all in for a show about a guy with smartphone and internet access in a world where information is shared through pigeons and dusty books. Yet, the end product is just another guy granted divine power in a new world, where any threat can be ended by the snap of his fingers.

If there is a saving point in Isesuma that makes it a safe shounen harem is the fact that Touya is not a dick as most other novel protagonists and that his way of hoarding a harem comes through saving old men and rising the ranks of nobility and medieval royalty. It is far from a great show, but as an isekai harem's story it gets a passing grade, maybe even being more enjoyable than its competition.
