I was born in '89 in a former communist country, in the '90s cheep japanese animation was pretty much all the TV stations in my country could afford. I saw this around 20 years ago, give or take a few years.
In 2004-2006 I saw Android Kinkaid...the first time I saw it I almost burst into tears. At the time it had been around a decade since I had last seen this and yet the similarities between mentor (Tezuka) and pupil (Ishinomori) were enough to bring back all the good memories I ever had of this show.
You never know what will stay with you, it took 10 years for me to realize how important this anime was for me. Another 10 years later and I still remember it, I still am a fan of Tezuka's style.
There have been better anime made, hell, with Urasawa's Pluto about to be animated we might end up with a masterpiece as the term is presently understood, set in this universe, but it's important we don't forget where it all started.
