The premise and core is the same as the movie, but 75% of the story is different. Its set far in the future with high tech samurai. The samurai recruitment arc is long and its this that I enjoyed the most. Their characters are also different. And after defending the village, a long arc starts where they try to take down the entire country (this was a relatively boring arc and resulted in a so so kind of ending.
The reason for the 6.2 rating I think is because it does not greatly move or inspire us.
Do check it out, at the very least, I did not feel it was a time waste.

While Angolmois is (loosely) based on events from the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274, whereas Samurai 7 takes place in a sci-fi future, Kurosawa's original Seven Samurai it is based on was a period drama set in 1586, at the end of the Sengoku Period, 4 years after Oda Nobunaga's death, shortly after Toyotomi Hideyoshi first united Japan, so both are Japanese period pieces of a sort.
